I picked up my new car up this morning and while me and the salesman were trying to fit either the blue or red lead into the connection in front of the gear lever it would't fit. We discovered that my car had come with a USB port rather than a large rectangle plug like their demo GTI had or like my old MK6 had.
We pluged in a standard white apple lead and then it worked. It displays album artwork as well and all the functions work. Not sure about video as I haven't got any to try. I haven't got the advance phone option but did have Pro Nav. Has anyone else had this? My car was BW50 if that helps?

Not heard anything about any changes but this makes sense and is a much better system as it will work with any phone/music device. I am still awaiting my car (BW48) so will be interesting to see what connection it has.

Hi mate, does it also work when you plug the USB into the Adv Phone Kit USB socket?
I did hear about this new USB version coming but, I would have preferred this version as opposed to the MDI model. :(

I haven't got enough friends for that

Sounds like VW are going to find themselves with boxes of blue/red/green leads on their hands. Sensible move, though.
-
Arrrrgh WHAT. They've changed the cable to USB? I wish I had this so I could use a real Apple cable instead of the VW one that falls out every 5 seconds. Is their anyway to convert the old version to USB? I guess not. :(

Hope this picture helps? Looking at the plastic trim holding the USB plug it looks the same size as the old type so it could be possible?

The part numbers have already been posted in a different thread with costs, you need the module as shown in the picture and also a new wiring loom which goes to the unit in the glove compartment.
I think the cost were around £40 for the socket and £60 for the wiring loom (approx)
-
Aside from the issue with 30-pin and lightning connectors in a myriad of colours, I can't understand why VW didn't fit an adjustable dock in the glovebox for IPods/iPhones, rather than losing that useful space in front of the gear stick that was always there on earlier Golfs.
-
Is there enough room to fit a USB stick in there and shut the flap ??
-
I'd hazard a guess that a mini USB flash drive might just fit.
-
Is there enough room to fit a USB stick in there and shut the flap ??
If not, just use one with an extension lead :)
-
thanks 2014 - was the thread on here? if so any clue which one? I think for £100 its worth changing it..

I suppose but why get rid of the MDI port which has worked brilliantly for me in both my Scirocco's and replace it with a bog standard part from Halfords that more than likely will not leave enough room to insert a USB drive and shut the cover.... Bell Ends !!!

Here you go mate, thanks to Sootchucker for posting this...
According to ETKA, there is a new USB Socket module (the one that goes in front of the gear stick), that is USB and Ipod Compatible:
5G0 035 222 D (the "D" at the end is the important bit)- ETKA Description - Electronic Interface for External Use - AUX In, USB (ipod Compatible). This seems to be around the £20 mark ish.
It would seem that this would need to be used with a new connection cable (between the USB Module and the Media unit in the glove box) 5G0 971 650 AA (as this one superseded the old cable on 1st August 2013, again the "AA" at the end is important). These seem to be around the £35-£40 mark.
Of course I've never tried these, just reporting what ETKA says.
My iPhone4/S MDI cable fits perfectly and I also have a iPhone 5/S cable too, pointless in ripping the dash apart to replace with this new USB version.
However I would have loved if VW put the MDI in the arm rest.... annoying why I can't connect the MDI when my phone is in the Advanced Phone Kit pocket.
-
This sucks for us early adopters. These new fangled USB ports should been standard on the redesign/mk7 from the go.
-
To be fair your right, the whole MDI/USB and Advanced Phone Kit saga could have been avoided with a bit of forward planning and thinking on. VW's part.
Why on earth move the port to the front, it was located in the armrest in the MK6, should have kept it there.
I can't see how I can use my MDI without running and extension somehow into the armrest.... :embarrassed: or I could buy this new wiring loom and USB interface and then extend it to fit it to the port in the arm rest.
-
When I ordered my car, the factory wouldn't let me spec mdi. They never gave a reason just said no can do. Maybe mdi is being replaced with this. I hope my car has this new version too.
-
I found my largest USB stick this morning and tried it to see, the flap does close so you shouldn't need a extension.
-
I use one of these at the moment..an 8gig one, they go upto 32 gig
takes up no space at all

Thanks 2014 - I pick my car up on the 14th so need to decide whether I'll ask Vw to change mine before I pick it up
Great forum as always

Thanks for checking !!
-
I guess the next thing for someone to check is a Non-iPhone connected to the USB socket. See what it can and cannot do.
-
Any idea if this is happening with all cars?
-
My dealer told me it was for cars with Nav Pro when he found out. If he is right or not is another story.

Sounds promising. I like that idea better than the MDI cable!
Can anyone with a newish build week and nav pro confirm this...
-
Mine is BW50 and Pro Nav which has the USB
-
urghhhh i wish i could swap my (I think blue, but could'a been red... ) lead for a USB one... never owned an iproduct!! Meh!
-
Mine is BW48 with Pro Nav & I have USB.........
-
Anyone with discover nav and late build confirm if its got USB ? I know sale bloke said its pro nav only but doesn't make sense VW wouldn't standardise although I realise the flaw ib the argument as its logic. Anyone ?
-
Mine is at the dealer all ready to go and it has the normal MDI connection near the gear lever apparently. Only pro nav as you say that has the USB connection
-
Hi,
Nobody knows what Volkswagen is playing at! Lol
I would say the most/all new build cars should come with the new USB interface rather than the MDI.
Mine was BW46 but came with MDI.
-
Mine is BW 48 and came with MDI, I've just got the standard system
-
I have discover nav (the basic one) and it came with a green collard MDI lightening lead. Picked the car up yesterday.
Album artwork seems to work fine, but when you look in the video folders it says there are 'no playable files'. Does that sound right? Has anyone managed to play video using the MDI lightening lead and an iPhone 5?
-
I'm confused!
I have a Dec13 car with basic radio/media unit and advanced phone prep. I can use Bluetooth for phone calls but it doesn't seem to play music through Bluetooth.
There's a usb socket under the armrest that charges the phone but doesn't seem to do anything else. There's a short iphone 4 style plug under the cover in front of the gear lever. I think there's something in the glovebox too.
What's the best way to play music stored in my phone through the car radio?
-
My BW50 with Discover Pro came with the USB but it will only charge. The USB option in media is still greyed out. Does it just work once you plug the phone in?
Iphone 5 and genuine apple lead btw.

Strange? I'm using an old Ipod touch and it works with the USB through the Pro Nav Screen along with my iphone 4 if I plug that in. My dealer gave me the USB 30 pin connector type when I picked it up. It looks like a normal white apple lead to me :undecided:
-
My BW51 without nav came with a blue collared MDi ipod lead and an mdi lightning lead. Handy as we have different generations of ipod me and the mrs. :)

Hi all
Just had my Carbon Grey GTD delivered today.... Very exciting. I was interested to see they delivered the car with the MDI cable (not the red collar one I said I would need) and it was pointless anyway as the MDI port no longer exists. I was a BW50 car.
So all we have now is the USB port. I have tried an iPod touch (30 Pin cable), iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. All play music fine and the album art comes us. However when playing music videos or movies all you get is audio and no video. Now this is a real pain as I planned on leaving a 160Gb iPad Classic permanently hooked up with movies, music videos and all my music in the car.
I have popped a few movies on an SD card and they play fine, also transferred then to the juke box and they play fine.
Any ideas? Am I missing something or is playing any video from an Apple device just not going to work now we have USB only?
Am I right in saying you guys with the red collar MDI lead and MDI port can play video from an iPod ok?
Cheers Chris.

Hi Chris, yes I can play iTunes videos using the red MDI cable.
I didn't know you could copy Movies onto the SD card, what format did you copy them over in?

To be honest I just grabbed a couple of files from my iTunes movie library so they are all .mv4 Mpeg 4 files. Popped them on the SD card and they play fine. Just video from the iPod or iPhone I cant get to work...... Not happy!

I'm finding the same problem. The USB doesn't seem to like video :undecided: Hope there is a way round it?

Been trying to get to the bottom of this one..... It seems from what I can find now we only have a USB port in the car the only way to play any video files is from DVD or from the SD card or files transferred to the Jukebox.
I found a note in the manual for the Discover Pro "Where this manual refers to external data media, this means USB mass storage devices containing supported files, such as MP3 players, iPods and USB sticks. Only supported audio files are displayed and played. Other files are ignored."
Not entirely true as I have found you can play a video file, say a music video from the video track lists folder on the iPod, however you only get Audio and no Video. So it does see them it just wont play them!
Has anyone else tried this yet?
-
Yep me too. I only get audio when trying to play a video file with the USB.
-
I was at the dealers today and asked the parts guy to check what version of USB socket I have. The part number is 5G0 035 222 C which is different to the version D's the uk guys have. Mine will only charge the iphone but can play media from a usb stick or hard drive. It can also play video without problems.
Can someone with the ipod compatible USB confirm that they can use USB sticks/hard drives for music and video?
-
I have the black VW lightning cable with an iPhone5
When connected and selected the display says something like no selectable files.
Can the car only see files from iTunes as all my music is played from the Spotify app with the files downloaded for local use?

Quick question: Are there different collared iPhone 5 MDI leads? I can't get the video option to show up on my system. I'm assuming the standard system can play videos...

Anyone know what lead you get with the standard nav? It's a bw50 car but I'm collecting march the 1st. Thanks in advance.

My guess is the basic nav....

I understood that USB was Nav Pro only, so standard Nav should be MDI?

I currently have a BMW 1 series with a "y" cable. This has both a USB and aux connection to the car and both have to be connected to play anything from the Iphone/Apple device. With this I can search for all ITunes playlists/albums/artists etc. There is no screen to display artwork.
Like Duroo I have Spotify premium which enables me to make any albums I choose available offline by saving to my device memory. As I have a 64GB Iphone thats a lot of music. My 1 Series recognises the Spotify music and plays tracks as well as displaying tracklist and ability to ff/rew.
Can anybody confirm if any set-up (no nav/standard nav or nav pro with various leads) allows playback of Spotify
Cheers

Hi Kevin
Have you perhaps managed to get your USB port to play music from your iPod or iPhone? I collected my GTI a few days ago and have discovered it will only charge my iPhone. When connected a message comes up saying device not supported.

Hi Gunners, no the USB port I have does not support music with apple devices. I'm not too bothered really. The only audio I store on my iphone are podcasts and I use BT audio to play it on the radio.
What spec is your GTI? Is it an Irish or UK car? If you want to, you can easily change for the Rev D version. I priced it at about €25. It's a €70 option from the factory

Picked up my GTD last week and nit entirely sure what cables I've got. I don't have a nav unit so don't have USB even though the manual refers to it.
I've got 3 cables for Apple devices
"green" cable for iPhone 5 (lightning)
"blue" cable for iPhone 4 (30 pin)
Plus another "navy blue" cable that's also 30 pin (brand new unopened)
Can anyone enlighten me?
