Hey folks, just wondering if this GT Tdi in Edition 30 clothing used to belong to someone from on here?
Im tempted as i love the sporty look, but would enjoy the economy of the diesel. Would be good if it belonged to a forum user, then i might get a bit more background info on the car:

Cheers.

It's a replica.
/Thread.
-
I know its a replica lol.
Im asking if anyone from this forum used to own it?
-
But you want the Real McCoy don't you Johnny?
-
I'd love the real McCoy haha, but fuelling, purchasing, and insuring are all just too expensive :(
-
Their are GTIs for sale for less than £7k!
-
yeah, theyre on my radar also. Ideally i like the economy of diesel (got a mk4 tdi now), but love the looks of the gti / edition30. The TDi's even GT sport versions just look sh!te in my opinion, so the link i posted seems a nice compromise

Tell me your mileage please.

With a stage one (and supporting mods) on my GTI, I can cruise along a motorway at 70mph and see 35-40MPG using high octane fuel. The extra cost of diesel for just 10MPG is barely worth the cut in performance, enjoyment and knowing that when you go to sleep at night, there's a GTI sat on the driveway.

Supporting mods? what's your bhp these days? Is that 35-40mpg on the trip, or confirmed? cause my trip shows 16mpg more than i actually get :S
I'd definitely be interested in the remap as it seems a no brainer.

Milage as in my yearly milage?
I used to do 13k, but change of jobs means i think that will be closer to 10k. Ive done the maths and the gti will cost around £800 more over the year (insurance, tax, fuel) compared to the diesel. However that was calculated before i read that premium unleaded should be used, so perhaps that will push it over the £1000 extra for the year.

for 2quid 70 a day extra the gti would be my choice

Tough call haha.
On a side note, ive been looking for cars upto 60k (fsh of course), but not sure if its worth pushing a little higher with the milage to get a cheaper price or not. Is it worth it? Im used to diesels, and you have the old saying 'its only just run in at 100k', but not sure the same can be said for petrols, especially gti's.

You're well in Petrol territory there, go for the GTI. From a running cost perspective I don't think the newer TDI will be much better on fuel than the older 1.9 TDI so it doesn't make as much sense to cost yourself money to gain marginal economy?
Expect around 30 mpg day to day but it varies on what sort of traffic you drive in.
I don't think you will regret it.

Buy on condition not mileage. A well looked after model is fine at higher mileages like any car.

Tbh i have a 9 mile commute, which is along A/B roads, i work at JLR in Gaydon. Other than that, its the usual pottering around town and the occasional sunday blast. I do go to my hometown in Cumbria maybe 5 times a yeah which is a solid 400+ mile round trip, so those times are gunnna make me cry at the pump lol

I know there is no right answer, but surely cars pushing 100k are going to be potential liabilities? Im conscious of owning a 100k+ car after 1or2 years and struggle to move it on.

30 + mpg achievable.

Well as a car gets older the probability of faults developing is greater but then you paid less for it so it's swings and roundabouts. Find a well looked after car and it should be fine, plenty of info on the forums.

More likely to see 35 mpg tops. But then it says GTI not TDI.

The whole mileage thing seems crazy to me to own a TDI for a 9 mile commute. 20+ then yes. The whole actual mileage thing has loads of threads in this mk5 section anyway, including the old unleaded or super debate. In terms of the cry at the pumps when doing a 400+ round trip, my old GTI used to get anywhere between 280-320 miles to a tank with most of that being town driving...stick it on a motorway and cruise just under 60mph and 40mpg is possible, and therefore able to return 400 miles to the tank. That was a standard GTI with no mods at all.
Concerns for the old mileage cars goes with the territory, and do your research before you buy. DSG box cluncking or slow to change, whistles from turbo's, air-con compressors failing, along with both the small and main fans, and then you have misting from wet pollen filters, high oil useage, water coolant sensor problems etc. Rusty front wings from the inner arches rubbing is also common on earlier models like that ED30 rep. Just a point as well, the seats were ED30 and BBS CH (likely reps) along with rear bumper but the skirts and lower front valance were all just GTI spec

Yeah i agree with my shortened commute its definitely more of an option to go with petrol. Before my golf i had a crappy 106 diesel (was all i could afford when my motorbike was stolen), and that returned 64mpg average. To get used to a car with 30mpg, its just a big hit to get used to. end of my moaning on that subject now.
Im probably giong to avoid the DSG box, purely because i enjoy manual, and after reading up on them, although they have raving reviews, im just wanting the simplicity of a manual.
dTEA, props on spotting the GTI spec'd bumpers, i hadn't clocked that ;) As it happens the garage this car is at has got some dodgy feedback when you google them, so i wont be looking into that car any longer.

How about the real McCoy then?
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201306037085856?atmobcid=soc4
Price seems good.
Do you think the resale value will hold better with the edition 30 compared to gti? I'd expect it to.
-
Expect lower than 30mpg though. Mid 30s in a motorway unless down to 50mph. Good price on that though, as they were still holding to £9000 not long ago. Seems low for a stage 1 remap though as the Revo and APR are more around 300bhp mark :undecided:
-
I wouldn't discount DSG, it is very good. The Gearbox/Clutches and Flywheel appears to be reliable, most failures have been Mechatronics unit.
Can't comment on ED30 mpg but it is likely to be less with larger injectors and Turbo but we are talking a small difference.
As for the remap figures it's probably not been measured. 280 isn't low, most will be around 270-280 from a remap anyway.
What spec are you after?
-
I was doing 140 miles or more a week in my GTI, and myself came from a 1.9 TDI so the hit was felt but nowhere near as hard as I was expecting. GTI's tend to be better looked after, and mine has now covered 83,000 miles and so far its been faultless.
Don't spend life being sensible otherwise you'll have no stories to tell when you're older.

This. The GTI is hardly a ludicrous purchase!
Buy the car because you like it, worry less about mpg and resale values .
