Title: Not clued up at all on diesels!
Post by: Easy_E on 09 December 2013, 21:42
Hi, just bought myself a 2004 gt tdi 2.0 which i got cheap as it has a few issues..

Theres a slight whistle from the turbo so it may be on its way out, and theres a few cosmetic issues which need tlc. I dont know the service history so not sure about the turbo or the belt, i am going to get it looked at and find out the history from vw.

In the time being if there were any major issues i would get a eml light as a warning if there were turbo issues and what sort of cost am i looking at for 1 major service, 2 cam belt, and 3 turbo (vw price and normal garage price)..

I really like the car and dont mind spending the money on it, also i have AA cover for parts and labour so if something major goes they help out up to 500 depending on the fault..

Thanks for any advice/help in advance

Service is around the £180-220 mark inc plugs filters etc (major service)
Cambelt is around £400
Not sure on the turbo.
Indies would be cheaper.

My turbo went west on my 2005 GTTDi, I paid £975 at Ron Turnbull in Middlesboro, did the job in a day.

You will not get an EML light if you have a turbo problem. You will most likely hit limp mode

thanks for the replies, i have looked at my AA breakdown repair cover policy and i see no reason why the turbo would not be covered to an extent, also some people on forums have stated they have used this on turbos before. If i do bump into turbo problems, hopefully the AA will help me out, guess first thing is the timing belt and service to make sure shes healthy

Can only just afford the cam belt change at the minute, but the whistling turbo is a bit of a worry, can driving the golf with a failing turbo cause major damage? I mean no warning lights, no limp mode or loss of power, its still got the power so until i can get it checked over i should be ok right? Im getting the cam belt done on the 23rd..

The turbo never went bang but it started kicking out loads of black smoke when the AA bloke started it, he told me to limp it off the A1 (about 100m) and then when he was checking it again it was making a rattling noise.. - is there a possibility there could be other engine damage now as im worried sick as sh!t that its guna cost a bomb??

Black smoke = boost leak

My money is on a popped lower intercooler hose

As for Barry and Bellend; wind your fcuking necks in otherwise the ban button will be used

What about the rattling noise when being revved though?? Could the seals have blown?? From reading on forums turbos can kill engines from sending debris back into the engine?

Thanks for your replies so far, much appreciated..

With a pipe off it can make all sorts of noises. Check the hoses first to see if one has popped. You will need to replace it as the lugs will have worn

You may find it then cures your rattling noise

No probs  keep us updated. Hopefully it was just a pipe

Check your oil level too. If the seals did blow then chances are you lost some oil too

What would u call a fair price for this sort of job? I mean how long should it take? The turbo is exchange and im guessing you can get a reconditioned turbo for about 250ish?

After doing searches on this and other forums im still not sure what oil my car needs. Its got 136000 on the clock and when the garage did the turbo they told me they put semi synth 10w40 in it, is this the right?

My cars a 2004 golf gt tdi 140

5w30 is the weight for TDI without DPF.

Make sure it's VAG PD specific.

Most garages will chuck 10w40 semi in anything purely as it's the cheapest possible oil. I can get a 200l barrel for £200. It's tempting at that price but barely anything uses it these days.
