Title: Fitted coilovers (Pics pg. 3)
Post by: Shady Pioneer on 29 November 2013, 09:07
When I say help required, would someone like to basically fit my new coilovers to my Bora for me? Because I'm useless. I will give you some monies.

I can travel if it's not too far.

Rears are ridiculously easy mate so it might be worth doing them yourself to save money !

yeah rears are a case of, take wheels off, use a pry bar/crowbar/any big bar you can find to remove spring undo top mounts, undo the bolt at the botom of the strut (have a jack under axle or something to support it) remove strut, undo bolt on top of the top mount, put top mount on new coilover strut, reverse for installation of new coilovers (only you need to put the rear spring holders in, but that just bolts on.)

fronts are easy too but more of a pita. undo top mount bolt (7/8mm hex key, cant remember the size, and a swan neck spanner to stop the shaft and bolt spinning), jack up car, take off wheel, undo arb bolt, undo the bolt on the back of the strut mount, finish off undoing the top mount bolt, remove suspension, fit the coilover suspension as reverse.

if you were closer id do it for you... pleanty of guides. if your able to use a spanner you will be able to do it, if your not very mechanically minded budget for a full weekend just incase you come into any problems. once youv done it youll realise how easy it is, first time it took me a full weekend with a mate, second time it took me about 3 hours on my own...

Why use a pry bar to remove the springs?

Easier and safer to get the car on stands and unbolt the shocks and lower the beam on the jack.

yep, rear beam drops down, springs fall out and usually roll into the road lol

Wouldnt bother attempting the fronts with out something to spread the hub apart though !

Bloke who I used to work with (ex Land Rover fitter) used a pry bar when changing my springs. Took him less than 5 minutes for both sides

Fronts are a PITA though.......

I don't have a spreader, I use a large flat blade screw driver, but thats just because I'm tight,

Also depending how far you're dropping it you might have to get shortened drop links/ uprated arb. And depending on the size of your rims you might need spacers on the front (at least) because the tyres can rub on the adjuster rings. I've got mine dropped about 50mm at the back and 45mm front on r32 rims with 215/40/18's stretched on the rims and had to do all of the above.

All done now. My mechanical friend helped and we went to the garage he works at. Went pretty smooth considering. I don't know what drop I've got but there's no knocking anywhere which is a big bonus. Just gotta let it settle then will get it tracked.

Here's how she's looking now. I don't know what drop it is but nothing's rubbing.

Cheers sharki, I'm going to let it all settle but I'm really quite happy with the way it's sitting. Only took 1 adjustment to get it right!

JOMs bud. Seem decent enough. Not too bouncy at the height I'm currently at.
