Hi all, first post on here... New to VW, albeit having owned an Audi A1 (lease) for the last two years and Skoda Fabia VRS prior to that.
I've opted to take a GTD on business lease, having looked at the A3, Octavia VRS and Merc A180.
My question concerns the media system... Do I opt for the Discoverer Navigation or will the Composition Media System do the trick? I don't need sat nav as I know my routes for work, plus rarely use the car at weekends. I'd rather put a few extra pennies towards keyless entry and rear camera perhaps.
I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Hi welcome.
I think you've answered your own question in that you don't need Nav so that rules the Discover Navigation out!!
-
Yes welcome!!
And yes - you have answered your own question. The car is perfectly fine in standard from (its one of its great attractions actally - having all that nice kit on it). Options are personal and in most cases are on a 'nice to have' basis.
In my opinion the only one that there is an argument to have as an essential is the navi system - it really should be standard too - it even is on the lesster model GT's. But if you genuinley have no use for it and the car is on a lease (not even the argument that sat-nav will make it easier to sell) then dont even think about it.
If some of the other options such as Keyless blow your frock up - then go for them! Have fun speccing the car - probably should be spending more time agonising of the colour, lol!

I can't figure out what the DN provides other than navigation... I take the other media features are the same between the CMS and DN? I understand that the DN Pro provides voice activation.
-
Cheers guys, thanks also for the prompt feedback.
The hardest part of the process was finding out I won't get the car until next March or April... Thankfully because I've currently got the Audi through the VW leasing scheme, I'm able to keep the A1 until the day the GTD rolls off the transporter. Another plus is that winter 'should' be out of the way by that stage.

I believe thats teh basic difference yes. Pro has a bigger screen, hard drive, voice control and some other features. The main reason I specced it is for the bgger screen.
-
I didn't bother with navigation as I hardly use it, I have iPhone TomTom if needed.
I just ticked other options instead of Navigation
-
Forgetting the nav functionality for a minute I still think its nice to have the touchscreen in the car. It just adds that bit of class to the dashboard. Keyless entry is brilliant, probably my favourite option
-
I wish I could 'get' the keyless thing. I need to try it but for me I just dont understand the attraction of it yet. You still have keys!

Yes you still have keys but no need for having to fish them out your pockets especially when it's chucking it down and you just want to jump in the car. Handy for the shopping as well if you have bags in your hand, allows quick access to the boot. On top of that you get a nice engine start button. It's just very cool  with a practical side as well
-
So you can open the boot via your hand too?

With keyless you just walk up to the boot and open it and it will unlock itself

Haha I didn't know that, this is a epic function :)
-
Agreed. Keyless is brilliant, definitely my favourite feature too. I recently enabled the "chirp" on lock/unlock too which kinda adds to the cool factor
It's quite a clever system too. It's impossible to lock your keys in the car now for example. The other day I had my keys in my laptop bag, opened the boot and threw the bag in and shut the boot. The indicators flashed a few times and I could see the MFD screen from the outside flashing up a warning "Keys inside car!". It would not lock the car when the keys were inside.
Ideally, to complete the package, it'd have been nice if VW made the key fob itself smaller (i.e. there's certainly no need for the actual key blade) when you have keyless. The key feels a little bulky in the pocket. First World problems, eh
-
If it was a credit card thig like Renault had I woud be totally sold - something that you keep in your wallet and forget about.. but its the fact that you stil have to carry a normal key around with you that sort of defeats it for me...
-
How do you get in the car then if the system fails
Oh wait. Thats what the key is for
Most 'keyless' systems still have a key as a backup.........
-
I've also heard reports that people easily broke those Renault credit-card style keys. I know myself that my bank cards get very tatty very quickly! Imagine putting the card in your back pocket and then sitting on it. You could be getting a taxi home

But then you might aswell catch a taxi then be caught driving a Renault....

Not the point I was making - of course you have a back up key - either a normal one or possibly like the Merc fold out card key. But for normal day to day use the VW 'Keyless' system does not work unless you are carrying...... a key, which to me just defeats the object of it comapred to how it could be if fully developed!
-
With regard to the Keyless, I agree with the others above in that I just wish the design of the fob was a little different. Even the 'key' on my old CC was nicer. It still had the back up key which was easily accessible if you ever needed it. Same on my In-Laws Range Rovers, the key is a chunky, cool design which feels like a premium object in itself but the new Golf key I used on the demo I drove felt a bit flimsy. It's the main reason why I've gone for keyless (so I don't have to use it!) and I love the idea of having a starter button so I can't wait for that!
With regard to the media system... If you really don't need the nav and the rest of the functionality suits you fine, then leave it off. Personally, I opted for the standard DNS as I do need nav quite a bit for work. The larger screen of the PRO looks fabulous but I couldn't justify an extra £1000 for it I'm afraid. Sure I will wish I had when I get the car though!
-
'Keyless' that isnt keyless....
-
No technology is foolproof so I'd rather have a key with me safe in the knowledge that if the system ever goes tits up and I can still use the car and not have to walk 13 miles up the road
-
Fair point - but you have to accept the irony of a 'keyless' system that has a key as its vital component.
Not sure other products would get away with it - cordless phones (with ahem, a cord) waterless car shapoo (just mix it with water sir).
Keyless car (please ensure you have the key with you sir).....
-
To be fair, the keyless system doesn't rely on you having the "key", its the fob that has the gubbins to make it all work. If it made you feel better you could take the "key" out of the fob and have it truly keyless
Keyless for me is definately the one option that has added a really premium feel to the car. Worth it just for the stop/start button
-
How easy is it to remove the key bit from the fob?
The system is a great idea - just not executed with the 100% thoroughness of thought many other aspects of VW design are... :undecided:

Why would you want to remove the key . If the system failed and you didn't have the key you would be screwed
-
If the system failed and we used the key to get into the car - would the stop/start still work or would we be ultimately screwed anyway as there is no normal key ignition?
-
The manual states that if the starter button fails (or the battery in the keyfob is low?), you should hold the keyfob up against the steering column and it'll start this way.

Yes but if you don't have the key how do you get into the car in the first place
