Well i was out with my misses and little one last night, just pulled in to toys r us had to be real careful as the had done that road narrowing thing with high kirbs so i was cautious. Once safe from the kirbs a van pulled beside me from other side of road as i was driving big smile on his face "Hi mate is that a VR6" Very excited he was i replied "na this is just a 16v" with a smile as he was taking a interest in my car.
Then he ignored me and drove off  are 16v's that bad lol not evan worth a conversation through the window of a dark toys r us car park .
I must admit this was quite rude but i did not go there for a chat so what was i expecting
-
What are you worried about? Do you like your car?
If so why give a F**K about what others think!
-
I wouldnt worry, as long as you enjoy your car thats all that matters.
-
I just find it funny that he blanked me because it was not VR6 are they that rare and good for people to pull me to aside?
I was always told bad things about them engines i have no experience of one so can comment but if it has any build quality like the 16v must be a good engine.
-
Thought this was a vr6 thread
A real enthusiast prefers the 16v over the vr6. :lipsrsealed:
-
W ell originally baught my 26v because it was cheap then another really cheap and i just like the car alot and good on fuel considering how i drive sometimes .
Trying to get my misses one now if any1 has for for sale that needs some work and is cheap :smug:
-
 16v peasant.
-
-
Some kid thought my old 1.4 SE was a VR6- he had the same disappointment when I told him it wasn't even a GTI
-
Now that is disappointment  the guy that asked me was late 30s from what he looked like and in some old ford van lol.
-
Bet he was a scrap man, VR's are heavier and worth a bit more
-
He probably was showing some interest as he knew about the VR6 engine, saw it wasn't then had nothing else to say.
I'd have done my window up and forgotten about it in approx 36 seconds.
-
I just thought it was funny i did went and had some fun round toys r us with the little one of course

What my main man len said.
I always get asked if mine is a vr and when i say its an anni they take more interest lolss.
-
Im deffo in the lower class with a 16v  but i like my 16v  maybe i should buy some VR6 Badges fool every 1 mwhhhahaaahaha
-
Put it this way the guy obvisoly knew a little about Mk3 golf's to know that there was a Vr6 but you tell any other person who hasn't got a clue (most people) that you have a Golf Gti there like 'oooohhhhh reallly' tell them you have a golf Vr6 and there like 'what's that?'
Us Gti boys have got the right idea  :smug:
-
Shizzle this forum would be dead without your crazy, sometimes pointless threads

I go insane working at a desk all day have to speak to people what ever it takes
I always have these odd moments some girl ask me the other day if my wheels are actually red
-
What did you say?...No, they're blue.
-
I looked at her funny :undecided: lol

Typical dumb broad.
-
If I was to get another mk3 it would be a 16v.
Only way I would get a vr6 is if it was put in the right way round and drove the rear wheels
-
If I was to get another mk3 it would be a 16v.
exactly this, by far the best in the range, a lot of people dont realise the true performace of a vr6 (or lack of it)

Quicker than a 16V?

I'm pretty sure a vr6 will out perform a 16v.
-
Try a tow a loaded van with a 16v then jump in a VR and you'll see the difference in the torque. ;)

Not exactly my friend. In certain areas the 16v will out perform the Vr if set up right. Vr is only good for the sound and for motorway driving nothing else.
-
My 16v toe to toe with my mates Vrs smash them. Like motorway they pull away. But who gives a f**k about motorway driving lol
-
Listen to Tweed he knows his sh!t having owned them all. Now the proud owner of an M3 lucky bugger!
-
Having never driven either a 16v or VR I'd guess the 16v is the better drive as there's less weight over the front axle surely aiding cornering.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong ;-)
-
No correction needed.
-
 good to know
-
Hardly a deal breaker on a mk3 golf. Not often your going to be toying with front end grip limits or your way to the shop.

Cheers mate.

perfect answer!
I can drive A to B faster in a 16v than a vr6.
Yes vr6 is faster in straight line but the 16v has a lot more corner speed and thats when we have fun
-
I'll be keeping my eye out for a 16v then next year
-
Probably wanted to Nick it! Mines a 16v, i love it and that's all i care about! :D
-
Suggestion, can we create a vr6>16v sticky, getting tired of reading people argue over which is 'better'.
-
Don't read it then
-

16 valves is better than 12 valves

16 valves is better than 12 valves
All day long
To be honest, if I saw a clean mk3 anywhere, i wouldn't be too bothered what engine's in it!
-
Vr is the better daily driver, Valver performs better on the track in the bends.
As a daily driver I know what i'd rather have. And as far a track cars go, the mk3 was never a corner eater in any format.
-
As long you as you are happy with your VR that's all that matters.

Funny that everybody always says that and yet it has better suspension that a Mk2.
-
TBF as standard the suspension is sh!te on both.
-
Yep, mk2 or mk3 neither are particularly good on track out the box compared to other hatches. I'm happy with my vr but sad thats its being picked up on sunday by its new owner but had an offer I couldn't refuse and they aint the best winter cars. My mk2 project will be vr'd soon enough though.
-
Didn't want to cause a an argument  just talking from experience from having a go in both, for all round driving the 16v is the best for me
-
Clio 182 will soon so all of em off.

How much u sell it for?

Would an Abf in a Mk2 be better?

1550 mate. Not bad considering i paid 600 a year ago. I'd prefer a vr in the mk2, but i might just keep it original with the 1.8 8v. I'm not at the engine stage yet so will decide when the time comes. If a cheap abf or kr setup was to come up i'd consider it also. I love the lazy (go anywhere in 5th gear) low vibrational, more refined experience you get with the vr so its always gonna be my first choice. However its alot harder to find a good vr lump these days. I bought 3 engines before I found one good enough to put in my mk3. Low compression and oiled up plugs its common now.
-
I used to have a black 3 door 8v lovely car it was. I would keep it original mate
-
Used to have one too. Those 1.8 8v are no slouches either. Mine made a lovely wining noise going up the revs although thinking back i'm not sure if that was normal. Ended up melting a hole through one of the pistons on full chat. Quite strange actually. It still got me home 15 miles away running on 3 cylinders. I think its must have been running some mental cam as it had an adjustable pulley.
-
I know what you mean the 8v I had was well nippy. To get a decent Mk2 8v these days is expensive. Miss my old Mk2

Paid 150 for mine last year. 200k and looked a binner but underneath it is literally the cleanest mk2 I have ever seen. Was all covered in a dirty wax that revealed shiney atlas grey undeneath. Was lucky like. The engine didn't sound to well though.
-
Sounds like you got a good one there my friend
