Title: Lowering Springs
Post by: GrahamFR on 05 November 2013, 14:44
Im going to do what i normally do and buy a load of stuff for my car before it even arrives in the UK. So far ive only got a tax disc holder, but now i feel its time (just been paid) to buy something a little more expensive.

So, given the choice, would people rather buy these:

http://www.volkswagenracing.co.uk/parts/vwr-sport-springs/

or these:

http://performance-suspension.eibach.de/en/news_en/eibach-vw-golf-vii-gti

I believe the drop is slightly more on the VWR's in comparisson to the Prolines.

And I believe given the gap between the tyres and wheel arch is ridiculous that springs are a must so compare the pics and let me know what you think.

The VW Racing ones look like a proper job... Did you look into a price or if they were fitted by VW dealer will the warranty still be covered?

VWR ones are £210.77 inc VAT, exlcuding shipping, still awating a price on that bit.

I have to say that i am swinging more towards VWR (not only because it will match my tax disc and eventual intake lol) but i have had Prolines and Sportlines on my last two leons without any mechanical complaints so i dont have a bad word to say about them. The only aesthetic complaint i would have with the Pro's was that they didnt reduce the height enough, the car looked normal but not lowered but its everyone personal preference in the end.

You make a good point about the VWR versions being better than aftermarket if you are getting problems further down the line...

Do you know anything about warranty issues with these VWRacing ones GrahamFR?

These are still aftermarket parts I'm afraid so the warranty for the springs will be lost as soon as you put them on. You will however then be covered by vwr should for instance your shocks seize up or something similar. Read this faq http://www.volkswagenracing.co.uk/performance-parts/faq/

And take note about changing certain parts will only stop the warranty on the effected parts. So don't think for a moment that if you lower your car and your turbo blows that your out of warranty, and you can also put the originals back on if you have an undiscoverable squeak

Ha, yeah sorry!

I'm in two minds about doing mine now, after 5000 miles it seems to have settled down and doesn't seem as high when I look at it.  Still, I can think about it for a month and a half and still benefit from this offer!

I am the same as you although i would like it if it were a little lower. I am just a little apprehensive about making it too firm as the last lowered car i had (mini jcw) was unbearably uncomfortable over pot holes etc.

do what i do, lower it then keep it in comfort most of the time through the crap roads i travel on lol. Actually, its given great use to the 'individual' setting which i initially thought was useless, now i can have sport engine and comfort shocks and normal diff to keep me alive until the summer

I'm just on standard suspension so no DCC for me. Maybe i will give awesome a call and see if they have a MK7 i can go for a ride in to see what the lowering springs are like.

For what it's worth, I've had the VWR springs in mine now for about 3 weeks and I can't tell any difference in ride quality. If I didn't know it was done I wouldn't be able to tell. I don't have the adaptive suspension either.

Yeah I'm in Ireland!

I posted up some pics here the day I had it done:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=259354.msg2442354#msg2442354

To me it still looks OEM. If you are after a very low slammed look, you might want something else!. This is a fairly subtle drop but it really improves the looks IMO, especially the rear end, which is just too high as standard.

EDIT. I measured it before and after and it's roughly a 25-30mm drop.

I'm concerned about what it'll do for my insurance and also my beloved comfort mode. I drive nearly 100% of the time in comfort and love the way it absorbs the bumps!

It does look good Joe. Definitely something to consider for the future. Including wheel spacers and exhaust

Sportline FTW.

I have them on a Mk5. 18" wheels. Ride is firm but still perfectly comfortable.

Of course lowering your car voids your warranty it's an aftermarket part. What dealer offered to supply and fit eibach lowering springs to your car?

I suspect it will be the vw designed springs not eibach's

Even so I still relate you to the faq section of vwr's website, their not official vw parts,  your dealer may be able to get them but if summat goes boom I doubt that the fatherland will care, if you can get the dealer to put it in writing however that's a different matter.

and remember that some dealers will be a lot more 'mod friendly' than others - was definitely the case with Vauxhall too.

most definetly, some Seat dealers used to do revo remaps and still maintain warranties, few and far between unfortunately

Sorry don't have one at the moment. But the car drives much flatter than before with no really noticeable deterioration in ride quality(on 19" Santiagos).

sorry I have the vwr springs fitted and it has not voided the warranty.

Cut and paste from the VWR website (faq page)...

Is manufacturer’s warranty affected?

Yes, for those aspects of the engine and drivetrain that the manufacturer can prove were affected by any upgrade, any warranty claim will be rejected. All other aspects of the vehicle’s warranty should remain unaffected. Any parts from our range that are faulty or incorrectly installed will be replaced by us. Please note that this range of parts is intended for use within the United Kingdom, if you intend to use the car elsewhere it is your responsibility to establish the situation with regard to your manufacturer/other warranty.

So your warranty IS affected even by VWRs own info. Your dealer may be one that honours warranty work on VWR modded parts but I wouldn't want to try and claim on (for instance) a faulty damper.

Yeah the dealer may say whatever he likes but when they go to click the reclaim warranty work button, Germany will give them the V's. Remember that the vwr. Cup is just an English thing, why should they care or honour anything that comes out of it. Theyre all running millteks too, is someone going to tell me that's covered also? Sorry to put a downer on things but warranty is like insurance, if they can get away with not paying they will do
