Does any one know the law on wheels sticking out from arch i have been searching long and hard today and no one on any forum website can tell ma an actual law on wheel protruding the arch i have banded steels the tread is under the arch but rim and side wall are poking out the side by about an inch only on the back is this legal or not.
-
The rim can stick out but the tyre has to be inside. And not rub
-
This is my view ,Rim can stick out 30mm from the body ,tread has to be covered pretty much, there should be no contact with the body, no law on stretch just tyre manufacturers guidelines which is not the law.
-
Law says that tyre tread, must not protrude the wheelarch...
However, what passes an MOT, and what a Police officer deems fit to be on the road, are 2 entirely different things, so keep all things within reason, and make sure you have arch clearance, with zero scrubbing especially when fully laden!
So it depends on who's looking at your car, and whether or not they have had a good day!

Handy to keep a copy of the tyre guidelines with you as round my way the police are inpounding cars with stretched tyres till you can prove the tyre can cope with the stretch.
-
Ok thank you il upload picture shortly of what my wheel look like.

I'd say that's too much tread protruding tbh. You also need to wind the coilovers down to pull the wheels off
-
need coilovers 1st lol im looking to buy some this month any suggestions on make or company to buy from this car is a daily driver/project so process is slow atm.
-
My 9" et15 looked worse than that. I put on camber shims are pulled the arches out so the lip of rim was in line with lip of arch. I tucked my front and slammed it. Flush or poke on front does not work on low cars
-
How difficult is it to fit camber shims on a mk3 and do the screw bearing up faster than normal.

Agreed, tuck the fronts and have the rears flush

I find very easy. I find small fiddly jobs hard. Anything big is easy.
I didn't notice the difference, but even if they dont last as long. There as cheap as a pack of fags.
-
Well seems like 1 of next buys with coilovers
-
its not good practice coz if you sideswipe a pedestrian then you will do a lot more damage with your wheels sticking out than if they were standard. and if that were to happen someone would be on the carpet.

if you sideswipe a pedestrian they will be seriously injured maybe fatally injured with the rim sticking out or not!

I'd be less worried about the poke and more about the stretch. Rozzers had my pants down with regards to the stretch tyres I HAD on my mk2. (Yes coppers are eager round my way). Tyre manufacturers set out recommendations with tyres and the correct fitting. If there not within these recommendations then they can be deamed unfit for purpose, hence ending up with your prized posession in the pound. Also, you should inform your insurance company, although the chances are they'll promptly tell you they won't insure you with stretch tyres on!!... But if for some strange reason they do, at least your covered if the worst shud happen. If you don't your insurance will be VOID for not declaring the stretch tyres (it is a modification) and then the coppers will well and truly shaft you!! (It's the voice of experience this!) But there again on the other hand, you could drive around for donkey years and not have any problems at all, it's just the risk you take!!
There is no law with regards to having stretch tyres, there not illegal, but you can still get shafted for them!
-
I see you point woth tyres luckily police are very lenient rpund here and my speed is very slow im no speed freak specially with daughter in the car the picture does make it look worse than it is and its only a 195/45/15 on 9j I dodnt think it would evan stretch that much tbh.
-
its the same as running around with a vr6 when your car is logged as a 1.3. you may never get busted until something goes wrong.
-
Well going to ring insurance and look inot some arches for rear I think.
-
you could stick a mk2 gti axle on. should pull the wheels in just enough and if they in to far then you could space them back out slightly again.
-
Yeh but gotta fine 1 for the full conversion.
-
but you just need the axle itself. everything else is interchangeable.
-
pretty sure that according to construction an use regs that anything protruding out past the wheel arch has to have a radius or more than 10mm and the lip of your wheels wont be 10mm so are technically illegal under construction and use and if you had a really informed copper could impound your car and give it an unfit certificate which would mean you need to get it motd again
-
I live I police hell trafficops and police everywhere they dont evan look twice at my car round here they just dont care so until I sprt somthing I should be ok.
-
Change beam? Christ bit much aint it?
Your poke is not a lot you can easily roll and push your aches out. Much faster and much less hassle. Of swapping beams hubs over.
I looked into narrow beam as I wanted to tuck 4" lips but the mk3 gti is quite narrow. The mk3 rear drum break beam is wide.
I think the mk2 beam is at the most 15mm shorter.
So is it worth doing for 7.5mm? No its not and thats why I didnt bother. Only rute I had was cut and weld my beam but instead I went for 3" lips instead.
-
If I roll arches can I still use plastic trim I have a arch roller at work?
-
Seen Mk2 arches on Mk3's to give wider flair
-
Yes trim the lip and glue them on.
I used no more nails vibration bond
-
Will deffo give that a go as its free and effective thank you for all responses very helpful.
