Title: 1.8T Running Costs
Post by: CM690 on 16 October 2013, 13:41
What's a 1.8T really like to run? I do 50 miles a day, A roads and motorways in my 1.6 mk4 and it's costing me about £10 a day (33mpg) average. I'm after a new car and it's either a tdi or 1.8T.

So many cheap 1.8t low mileage examples around within my budget of £3000 but I'm worried that they will sting me on fuel. I've been looking at A3's/Leons/Ibizas and Golfs but I imagine they are all similar being the same engine!

Cheers

I do 14miles a day and I scrape 20quid a week at around 25-28mpg in heavy traffic.
If I do a motor way trip like London to Brighton I can easily do a weeks worth of petrol or more in one trip
Not the most fuel efficient car but what a way to spunk that petrol away

Wow, that's pretty high haha! Might rethink the TDI!

If you worry about fuel just go for a diesel.

It all depends how you drive, mine is running circa 220bhp and makes a nice noise when you plant your right foot so my long term average over the last 18,000 miles is 29mpg - this is worked out using fuelly.com

http://www.fuelly.com/driver/dom069/gti (http://www.fuelly.com/driver/dom069/gti)

It's all down to driving style though, mine will quite happily return 36-37mpg but I didn't but a 1.8t to drive like miss daisy

I usually get 33-37mpg, stock map, 95 RON.

Whenever I borrow my mums 1.6 SE and do the same journey, I get the same MPG.

I get 28mpg in mine due to loads of short runs

I'll get about 150 miles out of £40 of v-power. Worth every penny

If you're worried about fuel, buy a diesel. The tax on a 1.8t is £250 (double to price of a diesel), might be something to think about as well.

If you do go for the petrol it's well worth looking into having it mapped as this will improve fuel economy if you can resist temptation to floor it everywhere

1.8T's can be cheap to run if sensible with the right foot.

staying off boost and coasting when in gear i'm getting close to 40mpg driving to work and done over 300 miles since last filled up with £60 of v-power with 1/4 left.

different story when driving properly though

If you're doing trios in heavy traffic get a tdi 130. Plenty of grunt but still good on fuel.
If I'm driving to work I can average between 35-40mpg in my 1.8T.
However if I'm pottering about I get 25-28 mpg.
And as above, full to light I have had between 360-400 each time

Too true. Hard to buy a 1.8T and not develop a lead right foot lol

That's going to work and back which pretty much solid 50/60 A roads.
When I run around in traffic or here and there I'm lucky to see 250, too tempting to overtake

I can't believe how the 1.8t varies in mpg between car to car, mines running 228bhp with APR maps. If I give it loads to work I get the mpg right down but on a chilled drive to work I can easily get 35+ mpg and that's without really trying. The last owner of mine was getting nearly 40mpg on motorways which is fantastic. But my other 1.8t which I'm selling soon only does around 25mpg at best, it's also running around 227bhp. Seams to me there all a little different on the fuel use.

When I first got mine as a standard car it would do 33mpg no problem. Had a generic map flashed on and CAI filter all was good but started to use a lot more fuel rarely seeing over 20mpg, put that down to the map and flooring it when in fact the PCV pipes had split open along with a duff lambda sensor and it was running like a bag of sh!t.

Fitted a catch can, replaced all of the shot old hoses, new sensor and was getting 70-80 more miles putting £60 in at near empty and 30+ mpg on the display.

A decent remap and good maintenance - well worth doing to avoid going diesel
