Right before I get shot down...what are people's thoughts on the GTI stacked up against the new Fiesta ST with the Ford sanctioned Mountune upgrade? EVO and various others have raved about the Fiesta ST with the remap.
I know for some it would be too small, personally, I don't like/need 5 doors though and would definitely consider it if I were to switch from the BMW in the future.
Raw stats are fairly comparable to the GTI and the Fiesta supposedly handles better than any hatch this side of the Megane RS.
Having never owned a Ford, am ashamed to say badge snobbery would come into it a little, plus all old ST's seemed to be owned by chavs! I suspect build quality would be lower as would residuals.
But for circa £10k price difference, you would have to consider it?
Has anyone on here test driven a Fiesta ST?
-
No - It's a Ford & My mum drives a Fiesta.
Sure the price is lower but that's because it's cheaper to build not because VW want to make loads more money. The thing you live with on a day to day basis is the interior, the Fiesta will feel cheap in comparison to the Golf.
I'm sure it will be a lot of fun to drive though so it depends what you're after I guess. For me it's something comfortable for motorway cruising not just performance and the Fiesta just doesn't tick that box.
-
Surely you should be comparing the Fiesta to the Polo GTI, come to think of it the BMW 1 series is more of a Polo size too.
-
The problem is that the performance figures are very close to the GTI to at least have the conversation. Think CraigW said on here the GTI PP should have been 250bhp then it puts it out of the reach of the smaller hatches (Clio, 208, ST) and I totally agree.
Also my 1 Series is bigger than the Golf and heavier so cant really compare to the Polo...
-
for me the Fiesta ST is the spiritual successor to the old Clio RS (now Renault have meddled with a winning formula) the Golf not its obvious competitor given the size
yes hacks will go on about handling but don't live in the real world when you may need five doors and are trying to load the car with flat pack furniture at Ikea
i know people say golf interiors are boring but ergonomics are spot on for using stuff, i had a current shape fiesta courtesy car once and hated the stylised mess of buttons and test on an angle
having one to hoon around a track would be great fun though
all depends what you want out of the car as we are all different

revo have 1 of these wee fiestas at near 260bhp seen it at crail a few weeks ago

I doubt it. I've driven many Fiestas and owned a mk7 Zetec S from new and can honestly say it is the best car I've driven (in terms of what it is). Build was superb, perfect reliability, brilliant handling and for sheer fun, although it was underpowered at only 120PS. Best part was the cost. I purchased for £12.7k and sold for £6k after 4 years! Car never missed a beat and never needed a drop of oil.
So the only problem with this car was the power and the new Fiesta ST fixes that. They may have made the ride too stiff though... Its not even that small. Its compact, so parking is a breeze, but inside the Focus offers only small gains in space. Features are obviously less than on a GTI, but on a GTI you are paying for it. On my Zetec S I added almost ever option you could and still paid less than £13k (admittedly I got an unbelievable discount + £2k scrappage scheme so the car was RRP at £17k).
In my opinion this car is a serious contender and anyone who says otherwise is engaging in badge snobbery. It offers a huge amount and at vastly less moulah than a GTI a BMW or any other of the traditional hot hatches out there. The only faults you can really level at it are that its less featured and can't do 0-60 in 6 seconds, but these are things you can't complain about when you see the price tag. If you have to have the best quality and performance then buy a BMW GTI (my bad, slipped for a second there ), if you want value for your money then Fiesta all the way.

Did you test the new ST bear when considering a new car?? I also think its a big contender, the Mountune upgrade gives it 212bhp for £600, bargain!

That is a bargain, what does it do to the 0-60 out of interest? I didn't try it because at the time I just went for the GTI and didn't look at alternatives. I really rate the Fiesta though. I don't see it as a direct competitor to cars like the GTI or Megane, let alone an M135i or A45, but I think to look at direct comparisons does miss an interesting argument about what performance/fun can you pick up on a budget.
These other cars are built on bigger platforms with more features (like dual zone climate control for one example) but depending on what you are looking for how much of the near £30k you spend is going on things you don't need like a slightly bigger boot, a slightly chunkier button, 0.5 seconds faster to 60 etc etc... a lot of people might find the Fiesta gets them what they really want probably with more fun and leaves £10-15k in your bank.
I'm not saying its for everyone but I do think the market between a Fiesta ST and an M135i is being pushed to be more and more competitive and that has to be good for all of us right?
-
Wouldn't the new Focus Montune be a better comparison to the Golf?
With all badge snobbery to the side it's a fast car, but it's a very harsh ride and it's nowhere near VW's interior build quality. The Golf GTI is a fast car, with fantastic running costs and loads of practicality, it's the best all rounder currently on the market.
-
0-60 is 6.7 I think so only 0.2 off the GTI, but mid-range acceleration is supposed to have increased by a considerable amount as well.
I excluded the Focus only because it has 5 doors so I wouldn't buy one, think their Mountune upgrade is getting on for £1500.
Not sure on the GTI's running costs based on owners thoughts on here though...mid 30's mpg not anything to write home about.

0.3 with the PP  :lipsrsealed:

You are right, the Fiesta is a class lower than the GTI, which is a much much better all rounder. But it is also massively cheaper which is what makes it very compelling in some cases. For example if you want a GTI performance but don't have £25k, or if you want a second car and your first car already covers the large boot/5 door need, or if your only interest is "fun" driving and you don't care about quality or features.
I think the main thing is it is good for the market to have this kind of choice and competition on price.

Fifth Gear tonight tested the Fiesta ST v Peugeot 208GTI v Clio RS, always a joy to watch Tiff and Plato hooning around, Fiesta ST came out top as chassis blew the others away
-
Unfortunately the Fiesta ST will probably feature in many a Retail Park/Cinema complex/Fast food drive thru gathering.
Hard to distinguish the Fiesta and Focus, naff looking wheels...seats look good though.
Ford and Vauxhall probably have to put more powerful models out as a selling point over VAG?
Mapped v Mapped is surely the only valid comparison.
-
There shouldn't even be a comparison. I didn't buy a Golf GTI only for it then to be compared to a Fiesta ffs. Two entirely different leagues
-
Badge snobbery and experience counts it out for me.
You go to our local Ford dealers and the salesman are all hair gel and cheap suits and the service desk won't even consider giving you a loaner.
I turned up to look at a Focus RS and they wouldn't open it up for me as no one was available to chaperone whilst sitting in it in the showroom. That would just grate with me, sorry.
Abarth 595 all the way for me in that price bracket

That is what would put me off, the stigma that goes with ST's (same as TT being a girls/hairdressers car...which they are).
.
I compared stock v. Mountune only because that puts it more in the GTI's performance bracket for say £8k less.
Not saying it's better than the GTI at all, but for some it would be in the conversation I would imagine, and all the car magazines are pretty much unanimous that its great.
-
Im going to stick up for the TT as it was my previous ride and by far the best car i have owned. The new GTI may be more technologically advanced than the MK2 TT but it can't compete in the looks department. Its a load of nonsense that its a hairdresser car as i doubt there are that many who can afford one. Plus as i have said in a previous thread the TTRS at 340-360bhp would worry most supercars especially with its huge tuning potential.
Once the Mk3 is released and is based on the new MQB platform with the technology of the Golf it will be a far more attractive car than the GTI.

Yeah it will be for hairdressers
Joking aside, I'm sure its a great car and I did consider the TTS before the M135i, but the humiliation of getting out of one infront of my mates was too much to stomach!

Are you kidding? A TTS vs an M135i. Beaten for pace no doubt but the TT is a stunning looking car compared to the 135. Your mates may have wound you up initially but then they would just have been jealous

I liked the idea of 4wd but want 4 usable seats really, plus I think Audi's in general are a bit overpriced (I've owned a couple). And they are all starting to look the same as well...
No doubt the mk3 will be very good, but I'm going to try and hold out for the M235i or the M2 I think which will be out 2014/15, or the special edition 40 GTI.

Mk 1 TT was a hairdressers car (that's the one I had - and it was a convertible ); the Mk 2 TT was just cool - and a TTRS is the complete nuts of a car, I would have one of those tomorrow. The Mk 3 will be an awesome car, and yes will p!ss on the GTI for looks!
Talking of stigmas, the ST is a chavs/boy racer car. It could be the best ride in the world and I'd still never have one (I'm too old!). Stigmas are great though, as you can tell what kind of person is behind the wheel without seeing their face (90% of the time) - for eg. Jaguar XF (fat old man), BMW M3 (Essex wannabee/bellend), Audi Q5/7 (Rich kept woman with 1 child) etc etc - the list is endless! And yes, they are complete generalisations but I'd also have all of those cars listed as they're all great motors!!

what does the gti owner come under then

Haha I was just going to ask the same question??? A few thoughts pop into mind!
-
GTI owner - boy racer at heart, ever so slightly an attention seeker, but who enjoys a classy cabin, a great handling car and room for all the family if needs be!
Or, in short, as f7ck!

You need to get yourself in a Mk 7 then!

I would say either
A) a car connoisseur with outstanding taste and a penchant for fine wines, or
B) a moderately successful Chav
