Hey. A simple-ish question. If I got hold of a set of 2012 Mk6 Golf R calipers, lines, discs and pads, can these be mounted to the stock hub of a Mk5 GTI? Would I need other parts too (carrier bolts, fittings, different alloys)?
I've been searching the web and various forums but nothing so far on Golf R brakes, only R32. Any guidance or pointing in the right direction is much appreciated.
UPDATE (19/11/2013) - Are there any real differences (or benefits) of fitting rear R32 calipers/discs to a GTI? Seems to me that the rears are only a few MM bigger on the R32 so may just replace the lines with SS ones and be done with it!
-
Mk5 R32 and Mk6 R brakes are one and the same albeit painted a different colour so will fit fine to a mk5 gti
-
Am I right in thinking the R brakes are bigger than stock GTI ones? Also, has anyone seen this done on a forum yet? Would like to see someone else's expirence with this job.
-
Yes the R/R32/S3/Cupra brake set up is bigger than the stock gti version... 345x30 compared to 312x25
It's been done lots of times by many others that I know of personally and is a reasonably cheap and popular mod, had a set on my mk5 and have transferred them onto my mk6 as well..
-
Is it a straight swap across? Just bolt the callipers, discs and pads in and connect the brake lines and bleed? I'm assuming I'll need a bigger carrier bolt to compensate for the extra thickness of the discs? Also, which lines should I use, the R ones or the stock GTI ones?
-
Yes a straight swap, you'll also need the bigger dust shields if you wish, around £15 a side last time I got them,
I have always fitted new caliper mounting bolts as iirc they are stretch bolts and shouldn't be re used, as for lines you'll need to use the R version
-
Are these parts easily available through normal car parts retailers (GSF, Euro Car Parts ect.)? You've been such a massive help with this! :-)
-
I've always sourced parts via the VW dealer themselves or my local branch of TPS (you'll need a trade account or just sweet talk them into helping you with the latter though)
Also if you can find a set from a Mk2 Leon Cupra/Cupra R then it will save you the cost and work having them painted or coated to red if you want them to match the oem rears as the Leon came with red calipers from the factory unlike the R with black
-
I'm going to keep the callipers black with the R logo and leave the stock rear callipers red as I will eventually colour code the rears when money allows. Do the bigger brakes fit under stock 18" Monza alloys, or will I need spacers or after market alloys?
-
They'll fit fine, will even fit under stock 17" monzas and the gti 18" space saver no problem
-
Then these may be getting fitted rather much sooner than I first thought the would be! Yay!
-
Does anyone have the part numbers for the caliper bolts, or a link to where I can buy some? Searching around but I've not found any yet... :(
-
And also braided stainless steel brake lines, these seem to be no-where I've looked so far.

Hi
I have a full set of r32/s3 brakes front and rear including discs and pads and dust shields ready to bolt on from a low mileage r32, £550ono delivered 07746888846
-
Thanks for the offer, but I've just bought a front brake set up from a Golf R. Just need the final bolts as the old carrier ones can not be re-used.
Out of interest, what's the difference in size between the GTI and the R32/R rear disc dimensions?
-
Lets see some pics when you get the brakes fitted dude
Don't forget I've got the huge golf R intercooler going very cheap , would be awesome on a mk5 gti  £100!!!!!!
-
Of course I shall show pictures! Keep an eye on my project thread (link is in my signature). Once I know exactly which bolts I need and where to get them from it shall be scheduled in for a re-fit. I still can't believe the difference in size between my stock GTI calipers and the R calipers!

They are great brakes , worked a treat on my golf R , main reason I changed to VWR kit was the 27 kg weight saving - it all helps on the R as its a heavy beast :undecided:

In terms of stainless steel brake lines, could I buy Mk5 R32 front lines and fittings or do I need to specifically buy Mk6 Golf R lines?

Yes all the lines for the mk5 R32/ Audi S3 / Leon Cupra / Mk6 R are the same
I can recommend the HEL kit, think the part number is 'VAG-10' iirc, this kit will also do away with the hard lines on the caliper as the HEL hose has an angled banjo bolt straight onto the caliper, usually around £50 for the front kit
-
Can you link to where they're available from online? I've been looking at these;

Similar to what you're referring too?

Here's a link to the Mk5 R32 front hoses via HEL, the page defaults to a full front/rear set but fronts only are £39 including delivery

Thanks for that. For an extra few quid to hugely improve the feel of the brakes, I think it's worth it. Just got to wait for next month's budget now!

Quick question, I just had my brake fluid changed by Volkswagen, what sort do they use, DOT 4 or DOT 5?

4 i would have thought
5 is for track cars etc
-
OK, did think so. Will probably give VW a call and find exactly what is in there. For now I only plan to run standard fluid but when it comes to track use I shall swap for DOT 5.
-
I've tried all sorts of 'performance' fluids in mine over the years and tbh I've found no discernible difference between them compared to the OEM VW fluid...
Theres absolutely no difference between the fluid that goes into a humble golf and that which goes into a ceramic brake equipped Audi R8 for instance... I just use OEM fluid changed twice a year due to the track use and it's been spot on
-
So maybe I should just grab 1 litre of genuine VW brake fluid then, like this below;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-Audi-Skoda-Seat-1-Litre-Brake-Fluid-B-000-750-M3-VW-NORM-501-14-/181223918627?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a31c98c23
I'll phone my local garage and confirm what they used, as mixing types is something I wish to avoid! I'll be buying those Hel brake lines too shortly, so stay tuned for the update! :)
-
Does anyone know part numbers and/or prices for genuine VW R32 carrier bolts? I'm thinking of buying from the dealer but like to try and shop around for a better deal...

New question! See main post!

Re fitting the R32 rear brake setup to the gti, yes there are some significant differences between the 2 setups..
Gti has 286mm (282mm if you buy the latest revision OE disc that stops the 'lip' on the disc the 286 version gives) solid rear discs whereas the R32/R/S3 has 310mm vented discs,
There will be an improvement in braking using the R32 setup and it does improve stability when used in conjunction with the R32 or other BBK fronts
I prefer the feel the smaller gti setup gives tbh as I like to trail brake on track which helps turn the car in and there's also the unsprung weight advantage of the smaller setup and the fact the Cupra has the larger 345mm fronts but retains the 286mm rears from the factory shows that it's not a mismatched setup to run
-
Ah, OK then. My thoughts were also that in a front wheel drive, the majority of the braking happens at the front wheels, due to 100% of the power from the engine going through them and the weight shift under braking.
Out of interest, does anyone have the part numbers for R32 rear calipers, or Mk6 Golf R ones?
