Might be able to get one sooner than a GTI
-
Very nice!!
Depending on release dates/timing and pricing, very tempted to consider changing my GTi order to an R!!!!
-
Shame they don't remove the fwd and just allow it to be a rwd car... or am I dreaming :D
-
Love the quad exhaust.
-
Not a fan of the quad exhausts. The twin pipes were a signature for the car.
The wheels are naff.
Otherwise, looks good. Should go like a rocket once remapped.

Nice find! The article mentions 19" 'Pretoria' alloys - anyone got a pic of these? A quick google search has pulled up nothing. I think this kind of motor deserves 19" rims
-
Very nice indeed. Must say I prefer the look of the R to the new GTi.
-
Depending on the standard kit and discounted price this could be a good alternative to the S3/M135i (and GTI!). At least everyone can soon stop comparing the S3/M135i to the GTI...
Guessing leather will be standard(?), so if the list price is £30,000 then the price difference vs the GTI (with leather) is 'only' £2,500...
Really don't like the alloys though.
-

Maybe I'm ready that article wrong but it states:
"If necessary, almost 100 per cent of power can be transferred to the rear axle"

Sounds familiar. Lifted straight from the PP e-diff description. Is it basically the same system do you think?
Its still not quite the same as RWD though since I'm guessing you have no ability to control where the power is and certainly can't switch off the FWD so how often would you actually have 100% power on the rear? Probably never.

I'm lost? How does the PP e-diff system give 100% power to the rear?
-
The same description is used but obviously it is referring to the inside and outside front wheels.
I wonder if its basically the same clutch pack they are using between the front and rear wheels as the PP uses between the left and right front wheels.
-
I like the look of it. But wonder if I like the look of the front of the GTI more. Need to see more photos of the Golf R to judge it properly. Also would be good to see what the interior is like? I read it was cloth and Alcantara.
I don't think it will be just on £30K, I suspect there will be more of a margin between the R and GTI than just a couple grand. more like up to almost £32K I suspect just like the last Golf R.
I actually like the wheels, they look different to the normal designs for alloys, and the colour is pretty cool too. But I wonder if the front looks a little dull and ordinary compared to the GTI. I think it's the lack of the prominent stripe. and the lack of front fog lights.
-
The S3 is £30,640 (ish), surely the Golf R will have to be less?
-
The S3 is £30,640 (ish), surely the Golf R will have to be less?
Tough to see how they can fit the R between the S3 and the GTI without making one of the three poor value.
Personally I think they will price the R very near to the S3 figuring that people won't be put off the S3 because some like a more "upmarket" car and the R has the image and reputation as being more raw. Also the S3 is Audi's problem! Of course logically this would make the S3 a poor choice, although going by certain reviews its poor anyway and worse when you look at it against the M135i so adding in the R as another better choice can't hurt it anymore really!
VW really should have chopped £2k off the GTI price though to make it really competitive and ease the R pricing. Though if they've sold out of them until next year I guess they'd say they don't have to.
-
If I remember right, wasn't the Mk6 Golf R slightly more expensive than the previous gen S3 as well. If they shave any money off the Golf R it will most likely be only a few hundred pounds in my opinion. If VW do make the Golf R just on £30K I guess a lot of us will feel a little sick as we have bought GTI's for almost that price if not over. If you add the Performance pack to the Golf GTI it is only something just over £2K-£3K difference. Surely they cannot make the Golf R that cheap. It would be great if they did. But some food for thought, wasn't the GTI Mk7 +£500 over the GTI MK6 price?
-
It will be £32k minimum. Plus options you're looking at £35k before any discounts, which will be minimal IMO.
-
Like Matchboy, I also think it will be £32K like the MK6 was before it.
-
To be honest, the R will probably be much better equipped out of the box than the S3. Everything seems chargeable with Audi's.
-
My GTI is near enough £32k.
If it is ever built that is.
-

Kind of goes along the same lines as the 135i though? Yeah it'll be 32k but once you've added the extras it'll soon be 36-37k!
-
135i or M135i?
The M is cheaper than a GTI at practically the same spec simply because BMW are offering 17% discounts. The beemer dealers I'm talking to know I won't deal unless I get the equivalent spec to the GTI for less money. Car is not to everyone's taste though of course.

Goes on sale in Ireland in December and starts at €53000..!

Like the look if the blue needles on the speedo etc. wonder how fiddly it would be to swap those...

easy but expensive. clocks are only held in by two screw's and a locking cable at the back. only problem is you need both keys recoded to the clocks. r clocks are about 199 with dealer coding at 130ish. I've currently got diesel r clocks in my tiguan and they are very nice.

Looks so much like a standard mk7 golf from the front sadly
4 tailpipes is just going too far, its only 300ps ffs and its not a corsa...
Oh well I had high hopes for the new R. I wait to see one in the flesh.
-
I agree the four pipe exhaust is overkill for a four cylinder engine, and I'm not so keen on the silver mirrors and trim on the front bumper. I'm going to the Frankfurt show next month so hopefully will get a proper look at it then.

And some pics?
They let you take them right?

Yes, I'll get some pics. Probably of people's backs with a glimpse of the car inbetween...

I'm not in the market for one [GTI is plenty fast enough for me] but I totally agree with you. Particularly the silver mirrors, they look sh*te. Very tacky
-
It's a bit odd that the GTI has a more aggressive sporty front end than the R?
-
It's a bit odd that the GTI has a more aggressive sporty front end than the R?
Early days for the R though. Although I don't think I've seen VW ever make a big change after releasing these kind of teaser pics. Correct me if I'm wrong.
-
Sorry, am I missing something
The 'R' looks more like a cheap sport version,
and which cock put audi wing mirrors on it
-
More pics here http://www.rforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=3281&view=unread#unread , my take on it Having just
sold A mk6 2 days ago ,is not as aggressive looking at the front ,but the R has always been a Quiet Looker ,it's all
about the Rapid cross country ability , the new specs are pretty special
-
On looking at the aesthetics of the car, I am so glad I ordered a GTI. The R looks so ordinary and not as sporty or aggressive, at least from front as the GTI. The MK6 R compared to the GTI in my opinion looked more expensive and sporty with its central exhaust and body kit. But the MK7 is the opposite. What have they done to such an iconic car.
I am also not a fan of the quad exhaust. I have also noticed a few other hot hatches like the new Civic Type-R will also have a quad exhaust, in it's attempt to be the fastest front wheel drive around Nurburgring. It's all a bit over kill.
All in all, I was kinda questioning at times should I have waited for the R, but i am so glad I did not. I have saved a few thousand and got a better looking car out of it to boot. Now when will I get my GTI, Nobody knows??
-
I agree Brenbo, the car just styling just doesn't suit what's under the hood. From the front it looks like a normal Golf, and from the back the quad exhausts look silly on a small hatchback. I wasn't a fan of the Mk6 R either, and found the GTI far more distinctive.
What I do know is roughly when I'll be getting my car as it just arrived at the dealer! Holding off for a week to get a 63 designation despite a private plate going on it, and am out on travel a lot next week anyway.
-
I will be getting my GTI around last week September / first week October all going well. Not bad for someone who order last week of March
As a straight conversion 53000 Euros is £45539. That is ridiculous money. I guess it will most likely be around the low £32K - £34K mark, as £45K is absolutely mental. If they do charge 53000 Euros in Ireland will they actually manage to sell any?

Yeah, you got lucky with that order, as did I, having ordered mid-April
Well there is absolutely zero chance it will be £45K in the UK, and likely around the £32K - £34K mark as you said. Thing for me is, even the GTI is pretty spendy for a Golf, but £32K, more for a 5 door plus all the options...that pushes it into crazy territory anyway.
-
Gryzor - Please post pics and your opinion on the car when you get. It's the only thing that gets us long termers through at the moment. It's feeling a little like a life sentence, waiting for the GTI without a good behavior bond that is
I bet you cannot wait to pic up your car. So near but yet so far!
Hope it all you wished for and more buddy.

Cheers mate, appreciate the words, and you can count on my first impressions and pics! I know what you mean though, feels like a noose around your neck. Definitely looking forward to it - just had confirmation from my dealer that it is there, safe and secure. It'll go into prep next week after the busy bank holiday weekend, and then we'll get into details of exactly when I can pick it up.
-
I'm wondering on the price of the R in the UK.
The mk6 R was a slow seller due mostly to price as it needed quite a few options to make it up to an expected spec of a flagship car. It wouldn't fall into many people's company car ranges and not many private buyers would stump up £35k for a shopping car with a VW badge.
But looking quickly at the Cabrio to compare, the R cabrio was £38k plus but has been dropped down to about £33k and as the GTI cab is about £4k dearer than the tintop GTI it leads me to speculate about £30k for a tintop R mk7 in 3 door manual flavour???
That would just about keep it competitive with the M135i as the BM has more power but the R will throw the 4wd card onto the table plus supposedly cheaper running costs.
-
I bet you the R looks far better in the flesh than it does in the pics even so I think its pretty good looking car and if it was priced round £30k I'm sure there would be a fair few takers
-
I was thinking the other day how similar an ordinary Golf and a GTI are these days - apart from the red stripe and some strakes in the slightly larger lower grilles, they have exactly the same front end styling cues. There is a GT near me with some 18 inch Merc wheels on it and as it approaches I find myself momentarily wondering whether it's a GTI.
So not really sure how the R looks like a regular Golf, as it has an upside down lower grille for a start.
Four exhausts is overkill though!

Here are the optional 19s - IMO the first GTI/R wheels that actually look fantastic. Hope they bring these to NA. From the VW site, click for big image:

They look very similar to the M135i wheels. Very, very nice though - defo a must for any 'R' buyers.

I wonder if i'll still be able to get a new one in 3 1/2 years time?? :smug:

Details on VW Germany R site where you can do some external configuration
http://www.volkswagen-r.de/#!golf7R
video shows the detailing and i like the configurator views of the car, looks great with the 19s
chassis was so good on the mk7 GTI i'm coming round to the fact i don't want to do much modding on next car, the DCC on the GTI has won me over and map and springs and some aftermarket anthracite 18s would do me
-
That is very, very nice  will be seriously tempted over the next 12-18 months :nerd:
-

I would prefer them in an 18" size myself but the standard wheels are so ghastly IMO I'd go for these despite the size. Either that or use the standards for winter and see if I can find these in the 18" size somewhere else (they would not have the nice VW centre cap then though).

Things noticed straight away
The embossed leather seats are lovely
The blue needles in the dials are very nice
I love the piano black finish on the dash compared to the imitation CF in the GTI
The black callipers with the R logo look awesome
The colour - just wow
Ill probably hold on to the GTI for 3 years but thereafter the R is going to be very very tempting and it will probably be a straight shoot out between this and the mk3 TT when I come to change
-
Blue ambient lighting!!
-

Loving those seats...those wheels....that lighting. Next car in 2 years? Quite likely
-
Wheels and lighting look amazing - not sure about the seats. The coverings are nice, but the overall shape isn't special, they look like standard Scirocco seats - would've expected integrated head rests (looking a bit like Recaros) or those ones that "sandwich board" over the seat tops.

They are the same as the GTI's seats with different covers.

And for that reason, it's a bit disappointing - would've expected a little more for the "R", but the rest of the car is sure to impress.

VW EO are estimating end of Sep, so 3-4 weeks. I'm hoping its sooner but it is what it is - my concerns were only with the build (ie. getting the f7cker actually built) so I've no issues with shipping as nothing anyone can do about that! Nice and chilled now, apart from 100% excitement for delivery day

Apart from the wheels there isn't that much to differentiate it looks wise from the GTI
I do think it looks the biz though apart from the 4 tailpipes maybe. I love the look of those wheels and the R callipers.

The "Cadiz" alloys aren't great, but the colour is fantastic.
I think I'd probably last a day or so before I wrapped it around a lamppost.

I find myself wanting one of these even though I'm more than happy with the Mk6. Everything seems slightly better, from weight reduction to better quality optional Nappa leather (in Germany at least). Blue 3 door with the Pretoria wheels for me - just need to convice Mrs Mac...

It sits lower, larger wheels, skirts, lovely. Oh, then we have the extra power, 300BHP. Future Retune .... oh yes.

Looks lovely. Much nicer than the new GTI IMO.
Mmmm don't think you will find many agreeing about that. Nicer? perhaps, but much nicer, I don't think so
I do.
It sits lower, larger wheels, skirts, lovely. Oh, then we have the extra power, 300BHP. Future Retune .... oh yes.
Its a Winner. Glad I waited.
Well of course your going to agree with your own statement

Nice find, looks fantastic - especially with those upgraded wheels. Lose the pano roof though.
Good to see another reviewer doing his homework: "the GTI has 200bhp"

Technically it does. Just there are a few more hiding out there he didn't mention.
Oh yeah, this I want! Too bad I already have a blue car on order.

Whats the USA spec Mk7 GTI make? As the mk6 usa model was less than the europe one due to fuel and emissions in the usa.

I see what you're saying, he was referring to the US version. However, I'm pretty sure it's still got 210bhp.

The look of the Golf R at Frankfurt is growing on me. But I don't like the wheels to start with. Also certain elements of the look of the car are a bit bling bling for my liking. The Front Skirt looks better on the latest video from Frankfurt, is it different to the one on the earliest photos? It looks more flared. However I still like the Golf GTI more, and not just because I have one on order.
It is more subtle without looking ordinary.
I must say the colour of the Golf R is great, and going back to the topic of the Front Skirt, it looks similar to the shape of the Golf GTI's front skirt (the way it flares out).

looking forward to seeing it in the flesh on Friday :smug:

I agree it looks great.I wonder why it wasn't displayed at Frankfurt with the larger alloys which give it a more aggressive presence in my opinion. Those smaller wheels don't do it for me.The GTI though with its red accents at the front are more appealing to look at.
I need to start clocking the miles on my car to give me reason to change it.Only done 14k so far.
