On looking at the aesthetics of the car, I am so glad I ordered a GTI.  The R looks so ordinary and not as sporty or aggressive, at least from front as the GTI.  The MK6 R compared to the GTI in my opinion looked more expensive and sporty with its central exhaust and body kit.  But the MK7 is the opposite.  What have they done to such an iconic car.

I am also not a fan of the quad exhaust. I have also noticed a few other hot hatches like the new Civic Type-R will also have a quad exhaust, in it's attempt to be the fastest front wheel drive around Nurburgring.  It's all a bit over kill.

All in all, I was kinda questioning at times should I have waited for the R, but i am so glad I did not.  I have saved a few thousand and got a better looking car out of it to boot.  Now when will I get my GTI, Nobody knows??

I agree Brenbo, the car just styling just doesn't suit what's under the hood.  From the front it looks like a normal Golf, and from the back the quad exhausts look silly on a small hatchback.  I wasn't a fan of the Mk6 R either, and found the GTI far more distinctive.

What I do know is roughly when I'll be getting my car as it just arrived at the dealer!  Holding off for a week to get a 63 designation despite a private plate going on it, and am out on travel a lot next week anyway.

I will be getting my GTI around last week September / first week October all going well.  Not bad for someone who order last week of March

As a straight conversion 53000 Euros is £45539.  That is ridiculous money.  I guess it will most likely be around the low £32K - £34K mark, as £45K is absolutely mental.  If they do charge 53000 Euros in Ireland will they actually manage to sell any?

Yeah, you got lucky with that order, as did I, having ordered mid-April

Well there is absolutely zero chance it will be £45K in the UK, and likely around the £32K - £34K mark as you said. Thing for me is, even the GTI is pretty spendy for a Golf, but £32K, more for a 5 door plus all the options...that pushes it into crazy territory anyway.

Gryzor - Please post pics and your opinion on the car when you get. It's the only thing that gets us long termers through at the moment.  It's feeling a little like a life sentence, waiting for the GTI without a good behavior bond that is

I bet you cannot wait to pic up your car.  So near but yet so far!

Hope it all you wished for and more buddy.

Cheers mate, appreciate the words, and you can count on my first impressions and pics!  I know what you mean though, feels like a noose around your neck.  Definitely looking forward to it - just had confirmation from my dealer that it is there, safe and secure.  It'll go into prep next week after the busy bank holiday weekend, and then we'll get into details of exactly when I can pick it up.

I'm wondering on the price of the R in the UK.
The mk6 R was a slow seller due mostly to price as it needed quite a few options to make it up to an expected spec of a flagship car. It wouldn't fall into many people's company car ranges and not many private buyers would stump up £35k for a shopping car with a VW badge.
But looking quickly at the Cabrio to compare, the R cabrio was £38k plus but has been dropped down to about £33k and as the GTI cab is about £4k dearer than the tintop GTI it leads me to speculate about £30k for a tintop R mk7 in 3 door manual flavour???
That would just about keep it competitive with the M135i as the BM has more power but the R will throw the 4wd card onto the table plus supposedly cheaper running costs.

I bet you the R looks far better in the flesh than it does in the pics even so I think its pretty good looking car  and if it was priced round £30k I'm sure there would be a fair few takers

I was thinking the other day how similar an ordinary Golf and a GTI are these days - apart from the red stripe and some strakes in the slightly larger lower grilles, they have exactly the same front end styling cues. There is a GT near me with some 18 inch Merc wheels on it and as it approaches I find myself momentarily wondering whether it's a GTI.

So not really sure how the R looks like a regular Golf, as it has an upside down lower grille for a start.

Four exhausts is overkill though!
