Title: Treated myself to a new AV Amp
Post by: bobbarley on 19 July 2013, 21:57
Got a lot of overtime coming in from work, so thought I deserved a treat for all my hard graft.

Should do a good job of replacing my aging old Pioneer VSX D510.  Will pair nicely with my Tannoy speakers as well I think

Despite the fact no one cares, it seems quite good! I need to test it out properly with an empty house though

What was wrong with the Pioneer? Apart from the obvious lack of HDMI.

Well HDMI aside, it spent a lot of time switched on and would get very, VERY hot!  Pioneer has been relegated to the bedroom now and will have occasional use when listening to records and stuff

Looks awesome.

I have a Onkyo one got a few years back with HDMI swicthing. Really good but as stated can get hot and swicth its self off for safety.

Doesn't help when you have a key covering the top of the unit up

Tannoys are good. I remember when i was young and me and my cousin used to go to music matters and richer sounds. Thats all we did in our spare time lol. We then used to buy what hifi at the end he spent 1500 and got 2 paradime? Passive subwoofers with mission shelf speakers with a NAD amp and technics eq. That shizzle rocked the show. I used to love going to his just to listen to the music (beach ball) lol

I got a Onkyo R390 which came with Onkyo speakers, it's a passive sub and satellite speakers but the sound from the whole system is phenomenal. So much better than previous cheap all in ones I've had.

I will eventually upgrade the unit to a better unit and then I will look at separate speakers but for now this is more than adequate. Excellent clear sound, great features and great bass! Love blasting on the tunes during pre-piss ups. Thankfully I have no one that lives above or below me.

My first set up I had a budget of £200 for the amp, speakers and sub.

Pioneer Amp - £30
Tannoy fronts - £50
Sub -£30
Tannoy rears - £50
Tannoy centre - £30

More or less.

I did ok overall. Brilliant sound on a budget. The Amp was a total steal, guy was advertising it on avforum. £30 for someone looking to get into AV.  He didn't care about the money. I drove down to collect it. He explained all about the Amp, put fresh Duracell batteries in the remote and posted the manual to me once he found it!

I have the same Pioneer you used to have. Bought it new about 10 years ago, never had a problem with it. I currently run it with a set of Yamaha speakers, 4 satellite speakers, a centre and an active sub. It's a really good set up, but I hardly get to run it these days with having kids.
I'm not bothered about video switching because I'd rather just run cables direct to the TV, keeps the signal purer and means I don't need the AV amp on to watch TV.
Mind you, my TV actually has reasonable speakers, but so many of the current crop of LED and LCD TVs have such tiny speakers that you need an amp and speakers just to watch normal TV programmes.

With the HDMI switching, would you have to have the amp on all the time to watch your HDMI source? Or can you just route only the audio to the amp for when you want to have the surround on?

The amp will allow audio only to come through without the TV being on.

I use my Apple TV for music from my phone and don't always require the TV to be on for this.

I think he means the other way round.
IE: watching an HDMI source on the TV without having the amp on.
I think most amps will need to be on to pass an HDMI signal from say BlueRay to the TV.

As for AppleTV and music, I have my AppleTv connected directly to my amp on an Optical cable, so I don't need the TV on to listen to music.

Direct connection of HDMI, audio or analogue video signals will always be better quality than putting the signal through an amp or switch box.
