So with the Anni nearing its doom, I am going to start cycling to work. Thing is, I haven't got the foggiest of what to get. I have about £350 to spend, my route is mainly pavement/road, but I would like to use the bike to do trails every now and then when I'm off for a ride.
What can anyone with more knowledge than me suggest?

When I was commuting by bike to work I bought a second hand single speed bike. Nothing to look at, less parts to maintain and served me well.
Mine had drop bars however if you want to ride trails as well you may be better going for flat/riser bars.
Something like this would be what I would be looking at

That's a brilliant I,e for the money, I used to ride to work many moons ago best advice I can give you is try to steer away from bikes with rear suspension as much as its temp for the trail etc rear suspension take away the momentum from your pedalling, I know this sounds strange but its true, rear sus bikes are no good for roads. I'd start with the basics, have front suspension, have disc brakes and go from there.

It's like you stole my old jump bike and stuck some 26'' rims on it, it's specced virtually identically.(i was running 24''s). Bloody good bikes these and wish I still had mine.

Seeing as you're ditching the car completely you may still need some load carrying ability from time to time...

Or this which obviously won't rust away like all your previous cars.

If you still have this when im back from my holiday (25th) pm me.
really regret selling the Sunn and now craving to get back riding so may be interested.
-
Ill still have so pm me bud.
Raising money for new car.

vulcan isn't a bad bike. If you're only gonna use it on road i'd go for the voodoo marasa. It has a solid front fork which will save you around 1kg in weight. I got the 2012 version of it for my missus and i was very impressed by it.

I would avoid a MTB at all costs if 90% of your riding is road work, way too heavy and hard to ride.
Get a good quailty hybrid, which is as strong as a mtb plus will still cope with canal paths etc but much easier to ride on the road.
Look at Trek FX7.3 or FX7.5, Giant Escape or Giant Rapid
-
the marasa is a hybrid and very light. Also are you gonna ride it in all weathers?
if you're only gonna ride it in dry weather (with the odd exception) then disc brakes aren't necessary. You can spend more on the running gear/frame.
-
Voodoo Bantu are pretty good bikes. They have some decent gear on for the money they cost.
-
I have a Cannondale SL and I love it.
Ride it to the train station every morning. Its light and does well off road when I take it out on the evenings and weekends.
-
I have a Fausto Coppi, superb bike.
-
with that £350.. fix ya car
-
I've got a bike that I need gone as I've got a new one, just needs a bit of TLC (brake & gear cables), will be less than £350  PM me if you're interested.

Seen as you are already used to the handling perhaps something like this would work well for you.
