turned her on this morning before work and the engine is making a weird whirring sound.. so I decided not to drive it today. anyone know what it is? the dipstick seems a little lower in the last few weeks but nothing major, it still has plenty in, and I topped it up today.
here's a video..

welcome to the joys of owning a golf. My car made a similar noise for only one day
I changed the oil right away and have not heard it since...

Apologies for it being pitch black and the use of profanity at the end...(thought that was the end of the car...)
There should be a thread: the sounds that mk3 golfs can make...:)....bet it would be popular...
It is also a dragon green car...I've been told that this is an unlucky colour by a recovery man and a mechanic......
It may be that you have put too much oil in...as i had done?..(I was putting 4L in a 1.8 where I should've been putting a little less than that..)
Anyway just do an oil change and hope it goes away....worked for me...

Maybe she just wasn't in the mood......

My valver has made a plethora of odd noises since I've owned it. Cam belt tensioner (this made a very similar sound to yours) water pump bearings (this sounded like a blowing exhaust) worn power steering and auxiliary belts (f**king irritating noise)

good answer lol

Horrible noises aside, that ISV breather hose needs attention as it's collapsing everytime the engine speed rises.
-
I know this aint helpful but love your sound effects lolsss. Wew wew wew wew

plethora.. that's a good word!
had a nosey last night and the cambelt is a lot slacker than it should be.. so I'm guessing cambelt tensioner! did you need a new one or did it just need re-tensioning? (don't know much in this area..)
good thing I decided not to drive it then! phew...

ha you're welcome. maybe ill record an album!

Replace it mate, never cut corners in this area of the bay or it bite you back hard.
-
good plan, i've ordered a new tensioner and cambelt while im in there.. i'd always thought changing a cambelt would be a hard job but when you do it it's so easy! the thought of some things is way bigger than the task...

Totally agree mate, I was really nervous about changing the one on my 16v a couple of years ago but did my research and purchased the proper tensioner tool and it was plain sailing really. In the past cambelts were the only thing I really got a garage to change as peace of mind but sod paying them to do it ever again.
-
right made myself a little tensioner tool :)

my only question is how do I know how much to tighten the cambelt? don't wanna over tighten.
-
Worth doing the water pump while your in there too.
-
Automatic tensioners can only go round as far as the lug allows, just pull it round until it stops and tighten it up.
+ 1 on the water pump, they only cost about £20 and you'll have everything off out of way to do it.
-
ok ill go with your advice!! most of them are about £35 on eBay, saw this for £20 tho, is the part I need to get for my valver? cheers

Europarts do them for about that price too and you'll get 25% off when the code starts working again.
-
do the timing belt tensioners not have a pointer and notch set up???
-
bloody euro car parts sent me a tensioner with an m10 hole! old one is m8. idiots
-
managed to change the cambelt.. put the old tensioner back on cos there was no play and it was visually fine. the strange noise has gone.. and another strange slurping noise that I thought was the water pump has gone too!! weird... all runs fine again :) thanks for your help guys :)

I have found that its better to take the old part in to Europarts as they can be hit and miss with regards to parts matching.

good idea mate i think ill try and do this from now on.. although living right in the sticks doesnt help!
-
if you pull the belt tensioner right round to the stop how can you allow for thermal expansion of the engine?
-
You might as well change the tensioner and the waterpump...peace of mind for 60000miles in that department at least...:)
