Title: Fitting a Short Shifter - **UPDATE** - Now Fitted with pics and info
Post by: RocketRossUK on 14 June 2013, 15:05
Hey up guys, any of you rocking a short shifter? People say the TTRS short shifter fits or the Diesel Geeks one is great.

Has anyone got experience in them. How much do they cost including labour, how great are the benefits?

Thanks

**UPDATE** - Update on page 3

I tried a short shift on my last Leon Cupra R so the same as our mk6 golfs.
Only lasted a few days and I removed it.
The way the short shift works it just means you've to use more effort to change gear. You lose all the weighted feel as the replacement doesn't weigh anywhere what the original does.
Totally spoils the feel. I then fitted some 42 draft design bushes which were a nice improvement over stock.

Is that all they are, £30?...do you think they are any good. Loads of people say they are a great upgrade, how much labour cost you reckon?

Yeah but the standard Euro short shifter, isnt that whats already fitted. Like i see a lot of Americans changing from OEM USA to Euro short.

So us in Euro, do we need to change to fully after marker one to feel real difference.

I was referring to the forge ones and non genuine.
The reason its more difficult is your linkage pivots on a point and all the short shift does is move your gear cable closer to the pivot to reduce the movement at the gear lever.
You still need to move the linkage the same distance but with less leverage it requires more effort.
As already said here the S3 etc shifter is the way to go.

Ok, so Picked up my new OEM TT/S3 short shifter (part number : 8J0711046E ) from Audi.

Watched this video on how to fit it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZnadfI3_jg

The only thing is that the install for the MK6 is slightly different, the second clip he removes is not a metal one. Its a white plastic one, and you have to be very careful to to break it as i have read a few heavy handed Americans have

So here is the new one.
(http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k489/rocketrossuk/IMG_0915_zps6254ec73.jpg) (http://s1112.photobucket.com/user/rocketrossuk/media/IMG_0915_zps6254ec73.jpg.html)

This is the clip you have to be careful of, lift it gently from both side, DO NOT try pry it sideways !!!

(http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k489/rocketrossuk/929a70e0-b64e-40cd-85ce-75f08e29609b_zpsec18ff83.jpg) (http://s1112.photobucket.com/user/rocketrossuk/media/929a70e0-b64e-40cd-85ce-75f08e29609b_zpsec18ff83.jpg.html)

All fitted and back together:

So overall opinion: Feels really nice, you still get that great OEM feel, but with 20% less vertical movement, great OEM mod for £30.

I thought when changing the lever you had to lock the gearlever with a 5.5 mm drill bit and the gearbox somehow to adjust cables?

Post by: mkviken on 27 June 2013, 19:55
That's right. You need to lock the lever in service positron with a drill bit then release the cable ends so the right amount of tension is set.

Really, I didnt do that

Maybe i ot lucky, just popped in it neutral and it swapped over fine.

It will swap over prett much regardless of what gear it's in but the cables won't be adjusted right if the haven't been reset

You need to remove the gaiter and sound proofing, put the lever in service in between neutral and 2nd and keep I there with a drill bit or similar then go back to the engine bay and pull back and twist the cable ends and the cables will move inside them and reset to the correct tension

Oh, well thats strange. I do believe you....not sure what to do or think now. Mine feels exactly like it suppose to do.

I just watched this video, he never mention about putting it in service mode, : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZnadfI3_jg

Or well, deed is done now.

If it feels fine Ross don't touch it.
I've changed a few over the years and never needed to do that procedure yet.
From memory you put a pin in the gear lever and there's a pin fits into the gearbox linkage.
Just changing the shifter bracket you shouldn't need to move cables as its only the pivot point that moves. This reduces gear lever throw but I've never seen it cause a problem.
