The Mk4 section is boring the death out of me at the moment, anybody else think its tailing off?
I just don't even log in every day at the moment!
Everyone must be skint to do mods!
-
Haha
The MK4 has been around for 15 years. There's nothing left to do to them and the section is full of the same old problems because people can't be arsed to search

I did think about getting a mk4 to replace my mk3 when it goes in a few months just to stay in the golf family so i read up as much as i could about the 1.8T v diesels and the pro's and con's and almost everything described them as problematic and poor quality so i lost interest.. :undecided:
-
Lol very true. Hated my old Mk4 Gti

Still works for me, but you have to accept that communities change over time so it will never be 'as good as it was'.
-
I will agree the mk4 has to be IMHO the worst Gti ever mad I mean comeon apart from the badge what it gods name differs it as a Gti? Not like the mk1,2,5,6,7 that had that lovely red strip, seats, blah blah blah
-
I really want someone to say that there is a mk4 worth buying..
-

-
Reliable would be a good start?
-
I really want someone to say that there is a mk4 worth buying..
mk4 r32 turbo conversion.. i`d buy one.
-
if you buy a decent mk4 1.8t you should be ok

But everything i read tells stories of problems.
-
most cars don`t come without problems..
look at rovers for example.. they`re a pile of sh!t in my opinion, but there`s people who love them and know how to fix them.
each to their own.

well out the 7 of mine not 1 has ever stopped at the side of the road broken down yes like all cars they do have problems but if looked after an serviced right they can do silly mileage
-
I know how to fix things but i'd like a golf that i can just drive..........

my vr6 i just recently sold never had any problems either but a mk4 1.8t is better than any mk3 unless its had crazy cash spent on it

lol.. fair enough!. my mk3 16v had a little rust appearing, bits of trim (roof lining) falling down etc.. still loved it though and it was a freebie i rescued from a relative. it never broke down on me. neither has my mk4, though my mk4 has nearly broke down on me twice but i was close enough to limp home.
-
I just bought a mk4
-

any picts
-
Not had one problem with my mk3 in 3 years
the mk3 is older. So give it another 5 years and see how bad the mk4 is then.
Me and my mates all have golfs but not one has a mk4 lol
-
I'm sorely tempted to try a mk4 1.8T.
-
I'm sorely tempted to try a mk4 1.8T.
I had that same temptation a few months ago... The brief moment of insanity passed quite quickly thank god.
-
Some folk are still going for it on the mk4
-
Have we proved that the forum isn't dying yet?..
I'll keep going then........................ maybe a cheap 1.8T......just to see..........................................
-
i wonder how the uk-mkiv`s forum is doing?

Cheap 1.8T... that's bound to cause problems.
As for the forum. It's still going strong and there are people who still come on the forum despite the fact they no longer have a Golf
Some people don't like the forum as much as they used to, and some don't like it when other people express strong views about their car, but you have to accept that forums and the internet in general are places for free speech. If you can't take criticism, then don't post anything.
Online communities change with new members, new cars to discuss, old members leave. It's part of life, it changes.
But it's still the most useful forum I've ever used.
-
I drove a mk4 1.8t and thought is was slow and boaty
So as long as you spend some money on it and get the bhp over 200 im sure you will love it.
this forum isn't dying. Ive been on it for 4/5 years now and it hasn't changed
-
Nowt wrong with a decent MK4.
My dad has had one from brand new, only thing is he bought a crappy 2.0 and that engine was nothing nut problems.
Iv since installed a 180 bhp 20vt and 6 speed gearbox from a Anniversary model.
The Mk4s rust as bad as any mk3, (and they are alot newer) arches where the plastic liner rubs against it and also the tailgate around the handle are problem areas. subframes rust like a mofo on all cars we have worked on - you dont get this as bad on any mk3 we worked on so far..
They handle like a sofa in standard foMr too. much more boat like than a Mk3 but i guess mud sticks
In a nutshell, they are not bad cars, prefer my Mk3 over any mk4 tho, but its hardly a normal mk3 that I drive... that said its never once give me any hassle in 5 years even with the old crap 8v lump.. been a great car, its built solid and no rust..
If i was to start over, and was not going to change engines etc, Id prob rather have the Turbo mk4 over a 16v or VR6 powered mk3...

The difference is that the mk3 chassis rots, mk4s are galvanised. Cosmetic rust is easily fixed, structural rust sends cars to the scrappy in the sky.
The mk4's flaws are numerous and irritating, but rust really isn't one of them.

I just bought a mk4
Is it an addition to the fleet or has it replaced the hairdressers car? :lipsrsealed:
-
See, Len was right!
-
So..this thread is more of a 'nothing much going on in the mk4 section' type of thing.....
-
I've had a mk4 now moved on to a mk5 but I would have on again but a anni in red this time

Given that most cars spend most of their time stuck in traffic/parked/going to the shops i don't see why having 200bhp is any better than having 150/180 on a daily driver..

So how many Forum meets are there now?

Yes it is.... Arches tailgate subframes... all issues...
Mk3s are galvernised too LOL, and those are the ones that rust.. the early mk3s (J, K, L Reg) are not but have a sh!t load of that wax protection stuff like the mk2s and these are the mk3's that seem to be less prone to rot.. like my 1993 car thats in better shape structurally than any mk4 we have had out hands on
Mk4s are alot newer than many mk3's and rust has already started to become a problem on some cars, few more years and these will be worse than mk3's.
Even mk5's are having issues with rust :lipsrsealed:
-
Well this has spiced things up!

It is, trust me the 180 standard is ok but a remap makes a world of difference in so many respects.
-
a remap transformed mine from 150bhp. should have come out the factory with a stage 1
-
I loved my Mk4 was a great car & never actually broke down or had any major faults in the whole time i had it but i had owned it from 40,000 miles & looked after it.
I still see it all the time as my g/f best friend bought it & still going strong !

Those are not Forum meets.
Just people from here meeting at an event.
Not a full organised forum meet.

"the same questions all the time" at the least gives me and Dom something to moderate

Also if I was to start again I'd K04 my Golf after borrowing a certain white one the other night...
