hey, my mk2 1.8 seems to have trouble starting up, it floods everytime, so i have to take the fuel pump fuse out, crank it over till it fires then dies, then put it back in , and start it up, even then i cant touch the throttle for bout 5-10 secs, as the revs drop as if its flooding, any ideas anyone?
Cheers,
D!

k-jet or digiphant???
the o seals on the injectors can leak on k jets causing poor starting when its been stood as fuel leaks into the cylinders and takes many cranks until the cylinder is empty....
-
dont know, how can i find out?
-
hi mate
is it a gti?
-
yup
-
year would be handy but easiest way to tell is the air inlet on K-jet it has pipes going into it 4 i think and the digifant has 1 plastic tube that attachs to the side and is looped over from the top to the bottom of the air inlet
-
its an 88, e reg
-
pretty sure it will be a digifant as mines 88 F and is one. when you turn the key does the fuel pump make a noise for about 3/4 seconds then stop?
-
Rain. Not one to hijack a thrad but could you post a picture of a K-Jet engine bay + a Digi one pls?
-
yea, pump does prime for about a second, so i guess it is what you said, a digifant.
-
sounds like you have a digifant 8v engine.
Sometimes the ECU can play up causing the fuel pump to stay constantly on. it should 'prime' for about 3 second when you turn the ignition.
go have a listen mate
you will need to change the ecu if thats the case
-
nah, pump primes for like a second, then stops, until you crank the engine over
-
Replace the blue temperature sender before you do anything drastic, not expensive and defo the first thing to look at with digifant problems :)
-
What is this blue temp sensor exactly ?
-
Its the temperature sensor for the ECU, so the ECU can control cold running & starting :)
-
..... for some reason it is amazingly important in getting digifants running right.
-
is this the one located just on the side of the block, above what i can anly assume is the thermostat?
-
no its in front of the head on a plastic housing, between spark plugs 3 & 4. it's the closer one to the head if yours is too dirty to tell if its blue or not!
-
are all golf bits transferable, my brother has a j reg 1.6, was wondering if i could swap bits over? i think it could be fuel pressure related, as the pump primes every time you turn on the ignition, is this right or wrong? i thought they only primed to a certain pressure then stopped?
-
not much on a 1.6 that'll be any use engine wise, the pump should always prime for a short time no matter what :)
Follow the top hose from the radiator and it leads to the flange I'm talking about, you should have 2 sensors in there black & blue. Black is for the dash cluster & blue is for the ECU :)
-
yea, pump does prime for about a second, so i guess it is what you said, a digifant.
Just to help you a little with your learning and stop you getting confused.
Both K-jet and digi will make this noise as the fuel pump primes. The other guy was simply asking this to check if your pump was working.
K-jet is a mechanical injection system - Digi is an electronicly controlled injection system.
Heres 2 pics but bare in mind they are both Left hand drive so will prob look a little different.
Digifant - See the electronic bit on the airbox.

K-Jetronic - See the mechanical bit on the airbox with pipes coming off.

deffo digifant, still got these problems, its driving me crazy, lol. i only just got it and havent driven it yet, it seems its true that people only sell a car when something goes wrong, oh well

So what have you tried so far?
