While watching the Grand Prix I decided to pull up Google Maps and plan my route home from the dealer. Here it is below.
I'm picking mine up from near Birmingham and heading home to Cambridge. Start out on the A5 but get off asap and follow this route:
Birmingham A5
B4669 - First bendy bit and a few twisty roads - 7 miles
Back roads to cross the M1 then get to Market Harborough - Lovely twisty roads for a long stretch - 20 miles
A6, A14 (round Kettering), A6 - Faster Rd and stretches of Duel Carriage periodically for some bursts of speed - 20 miles
B645 - Second twisty bit with some ups and downs as well - 19 miles
A428 - Fast road, off duty coppers often caught here! - 6 miles
A428 Duel Carridge - Practically a motorway, time to open that throttle - 6 miles
Cambridge
Total of 80 miles, about 2.5 hours.
What are your guys plans?

For me it's up the A52 from Derby to the M1... Up to J26 and down the A610.. So lots of chances to beat some civic r types off at the lights!

Mines might be the longest and the only one involving a ferry lol......
Pick up in Gillingham for a drive back to Belfast (via Liverpool-Belfast ferry) involving M2/M25/M1/M6/M56/M53 and about 270 miles.

 Don't kill any bikers!
Should be fun though, but what is your estimated delivery? Hope you're not doing that in winter weather.... or wet for that matter! haha

I've got a mixture of town driving, dual carriage ways.....and some decent corners to nail it
F7ck me u can't wait!!
-
Mine will be getting it's head kicked in round the Lake district for the weekend and then a 150 mile cruise down the M6 back to the midlands!
-
Mine will be a trip from Warrington to Edinburgh (approx 220 miles). Need to plan an alternate route to stay off motorways so I can break her in properly.
-
Mines a three mile drive from the dealer to home  on country roads

Make sure you pay the extra for Premium Class or the car will be on the deck and covered in salt by the time you get home

Was thinking about that but *think* on the ferry on that route the open air deck is for unaccompanied HGV trailers only and all cars on the inside lower deck - only £40 difference so was going to get it anyway to get faster disembarkation and lounge access.
Been on it once previously.

Have to say, this kind of comment is really helpful. Pete sounds like he knows what he is doing, but if it had been me I wouldn't have realised this. Love how you can get great advice on this site!

I would check that Pete, I was on the boat last September and all cars were on the top deck on both journeys, all lorries and trailers were inside along with the premium class people. My car was a mess when I got to Liverpool and had to find a jet wash.
Maybe it has changed since then

Takes me back to my 1st MK5 Golf 140TDI. Drove from Newcastle to Burnley to pick it up from Lookers (broker order), drove straight down to Southampton, got the Southampton to Le Harve ferry with the car, as soon as we got on French soil the low oil warning light came on (motorway run-in made that a car thirsty for oil and fuel). We got a load of stuff from a Hypermarket, including Port Salut cheese, thinking that the car bays were freezing so everything would be OK. The next morning I got back to my 2 day old car that stunk of French cheese - those car decks get quite hot on the overnight crossing, even if they're freezing when you're allowed back to your car. Took a month to get the new car smell back.

After a fews coats of sealant, Taking a weeks holiday and heading to the highlands.

Who knows the snow should be back in the cairngorms by then.

What is the correct way to 'run in' a new car nowadays anyway. So many varying opinions on it. Some say drive it like you stole it, don't rev it over 2k RPM and drive extremely slowly, don't drive at constant speeds (on the motorway).
So many different opinions at opposite ends of the scale! I'm guessing sport mode is off limits for a while as that will hit the red line and can't be healthy for a new car?
I'm trying to create my journey around what's best for the car really.
-
Just use a bit of common sense really. use it but don't abuse it. avoid constant revs for prolonged periods for the first 500 miles and then drive as normal.
-
Variation is key. Avoid (the odd lapse is fine, don't lose sleep over it) using more than 1/2 throttle and going more than 2/3 revs for the first 500 miles, and increase it up to 1000 miles. Drive it any way you like after that, obviously avoid racing a cold engine at any time.
Some say engines are built to tighter tolerances these days etc and it doesn't matter, but machined tolerances aren't everything, the piston seal is vitally important to oil consumption, fuel consumption and a better than average output. You have to avoid running in on motorway miles - If you have to jump on the motorway for a long journey home, come off a few junctions and use the A/B roads for 10 mins to rejoin a motorway junction a bit further up.
My 1st MK5 Golf TDI was poor for oil and fuel consumption when run in on motorway miles - don't do it.
