Title: need an experienced mind on the potential buy mk3 golf gti 1 owner from new
Post by: dan_thevdub_man on 31 May 2013, 10:43
hi, just need some advice on this potential buy please.
ebay item 190843733234

1 owner from new 53000 miles on the clock completely standard.
me n the guy have come to an agreement on price.
just wondering what you guys think about buying a completelt standard car.
downer is it has no service history with it.
I like the thought of the car being 100% standard no tinkering at all.

iv not long brought a mk3 and the gearbox literally exploded so I don't wanna get stung again.

just let me know please what you guys think.

cheers dan

So what price have you agreed?

Also is it 8v or 16v?

Need to know how it has been stored and the rust situation

Aroun the 1250 mark. Apparently no rust. He's away on hol at the mo so nt got too much info. It's the 8v
The fact it's completely standard just leaves me with a nice blank canvass for me to literally start again. I dnt want to spoil it and make it a chat mobile. Iv or a highline mulberry interior ready to go in. Just dnt want it to blow up on me that's all.
My old 8v did all be it the gearbox went not the engine.
Tht had 160 on the clock

There's no service history whatsoever on a 1 owner car- did he actually drive it?

The only way it will have no rust is if its been garaged,

I always look for low milage cars, but history is important for me.

Surely he had the warranty services? Back when this car was new you had to or it invalidated the warranty!
So I would be very suspicious!
Plus 1250 is way too much for an 8v

Offer him 500!

Plus you have agreed a price without seeing it?

You are nuts!

First of all, don't forget this is a dealer and no the "1 lady owner from new". The fact that it has no service history means the dealer cannot verify any of the claims unless it has been serviced via a main dealer all of its life which is unlikely.

If it was genuine with FSH, known recent cambelt change etc etc then I would personally go for it at £1250 but it isn't. Don't forget a cambelt/water pump change will be £300, the tyres might be bald, the discs might need changing soon etc etc etc

If it was round the corner then again go and have a look but doesn't sound like you are. All in all take a punt at £850 or otherwise leave alone.

Shame you missed one of his other recent sales though:

Its all to do with rust on these cars especially the later ones which suffer worse. Even though on the surface it may look good you just don't know what lurking under those plastic wheel arches and sill covers. I had a 97' model with 80k and it was quite bad before i repaired it. If that car was run on an ebay auction it would struggle to top £500 with very little MOT. They hide so much its a gamble.

If I still lived in the UK, I'd have had that Lada! I have a soft spot for Soviet cars, and this one is mint! Plus down the road from my home town.

Yeah the Russians went to outer space but couldn't build a decent car...go figure...

Go look at the car as you can get cheaper ones on here with a better service history...take a look at the for sale...I think there is one for under £200 kicking about...sure you can fix that right up for another £500 or even less and be very very happy...:)

With no service history at all I would be suspicious tho.  The price is too much anyway

History means little IMO for car in this price range

mine had non (well the book i got was for another car so looks like their was a mix up at some point), had NO rust and cost me £600 5 years ago. it had 89k on the 8v engine. It never once broke down or let me down

go look at it and make your own mind up, its a 1000£ car not a 40k ferrari.. would buy on condition and how it drives not the fact it has no history

Go, have a look at it. And then take things on from there. It's nice Coz it's black and 3 dr. But it all depends on the condition. And even if it's got no history the car should drive/feel like what it's done. But personally I think you have made a mistake by agreeing a price with him before you've actually seen it.

I did this once, car was advertised for £1,650. On the phone got the guy down to £1,300. Went down and haggled with him and got the car for £850. Then 2 years later sold the same car for £1,600. Result :afro:

Thanks for all the replies. Guess I got caught up in the moment. I have emailed him explaining the bits that will need doing cam belt water pump Etc and offered him 1000 with 12 months mot 900 without. I would go n view first but it's 170 miles away haha.
Even if it wasn't serviced proper surely tho with a bit of tax on my part water pump belts oil plugs the works that would help?

People have said just sack the mk3 idea off...but I'm in love haha I'm sad every time I see my dead one in the drive with a trail of oil (golf blood) trickling away.
I need another in my life

Y dont you just fit a new gearbox to yours save your self a grand??
I recently bought a MK3 GTI 16v done just over 110K 2 owners from new first being a doctor, looked to have very little rust but took arches off and has a few scabs. Theres not many MK3's out there that dont well GTI's anyway the arches are a crap idea in reality.
