Title: Late to the tail light party.
Post by: tenrohle on 28 May 2013, 18:40
Hi guys,
I've seen a few threads about rear LED's and a group buy of some kind, which all seem to be before I bought my golf.
I'd like to replace mine with the grey/black ones but am not sure where to look for the good ones.
Theres some on eBay but I don't want to end up with some cheap rubbish ones.
Any advice is very much appreciated.
Thanks.

I believe these are DEPO reps, which I would presume are pretty high standard.

Me too. 100%. Just need to decide if the black/smoke ones are going to look good on my carbon grey gti. I really don't want to make the car look ricey/boyracer at all.
Title: Re: Late to the tail light party.
Post by: skandar on 29 May 2013, 18:45
folks! i'm a late comer to the tail light party myself..  count me in for the discount deal.. i'm after the tinted red set, golf R sytle.. this will be ideal as I don't have to fork out more cash to update my BCM..

on the parts4euro website, i noticed the fog lights are on the passenger side.. could this be a MOT failure? i wonder if they would swap sides to supply for RHD cars..

They look good but I want some that come with all the correct lamps for UK use.
I can't buy originals or I'd need a new body controller as mine is a September 09 car.

No idea mate, I thought these were pretty much straight swap - or just LED connectors? Anyone any ideas?

I think they're a straight swap but I'd like to know if they have a foglamp on the right and not the left.

No probs ross, ive had a few emails from the seller, but his
Understanding of the english language is vague, from what
Ive read it seems with a bit of small rewiring these lights
Will be suitable for uk use etc, and poss a bit of vcds coding.
Im going to order a set when i get home today,
Btw it seems the buyers not keen on a multibuy etc.

Not sure if you have misread that but the lights DO need fog and reverse swapping over.

I'm just waiting to see how much my car will cost to be repaired before I decide whether to buy some now
Title: Re: Late to the tail light party.
Post by: Marshy on 02 June 2013, 16:47
I'm unsure if I'm missing something here.
If you buy LHD lamps it won't be a wiring alteration required will it?
If fitted as they are your reverse lamp will be red and your foglamp will be white.
So even with the wiring changed the foglamp will be on the left and if you buy the set with twin foglamps does that mean you don't have any reverse light?

If I was buying it would be the smoked cherry red same as oem Gti and R

Oy my god, why the hell is some English manufacture not making RHD one from the start, then we wouldn't have to fuss around with these

Hi guys,
New to golf scene and looking at getting some R LED lights, obvious choice would be the oem ones but I'm sure you'll all understand that money dictates these decisions!
I've seen these on eBay: not sure what people's thoughts were on these?

Well the first ones do not have led indicators or reverse or foglamps.
The second ones look the best but don't say too much about them and I'm not sure on the bank transfer only thing?
My cars a September 09 so oem LEDs can't be coded in with a new body controller.
I'm waiting on someone taking the plunge to hear what they're like.
Title: Re: Late to the tail light party.
Post by: RocketRossUK on 02 June 2013, 22:33
I wouldnt go for either of the above 2. Only bank transfer - Yeah right, nice scam, he hasnt sold anything since Christmas on paypal.

And second one is from Romania - they quality will be crap.

Its has to be English, German or american.....

Did someone enquire about these:

Is your car a 59plate mate?
If so its unlikely the oem lamps will work without throwing the bulb failure lamp on.
That's what's stopping me buying the oem ones.

I think if you do some research the body controllers for 59 plate cars can't be coded correctly for oem led lamps, this is using the adapters too.

When I looked in to it if your car was pre 2010 then a new body controller was required.
For thermos and controller were £850!!!!!
That's the reason I like these after market ones but need the foglamps and reverse lamps in the correct places.

I've just checked the version of my controller and its not compatible with oem LED lamps.
My cars a September 09
Interestingly from the research it seems that if you have xenons with drls then your controller should be compatible.
I'm back to these ones that need modified and awaiting feedback for when they arrive.

Sorry if this has been answered before but after reading a LOT of rear LED posts I'm still confused. I'm just about to pickup my June 2009 golf gti and want to put rear LEDs on. Am I correct in that I would have to upgrade the BCM if I used the genuine VW parts it if I went with the depo ones I would just needed make sure they were the fog ones and after fitting them with the adapters I would have to recode the VCDS?

i'm curious, what comes on for  reverse and fog light respectively before making any wiring mods? this might give a better clue for making mods.
I'm thinking if it'll just be a matter of bulb swap, as current setup should light up wrong colored bulb but on the correct sides, if this makes any sense at all..

Unless you can modify to have a red fog lamp on the right then they will jot pass an mot or be legal in the UK.
From what I can see changing the wiring will make the fog lamp on the left and reverse on the right!

Had another look at the lights tonight and it seems that ill have to replace the fitted clear fog light with a red 21 watt bulb, which will replace the dull 16watt fitted bulb, as for the reverse light im thinking it maybe a led that fitted as i cant find a bulb inside the fitting? Ive temporarily painted the fog light with red paint, and ive ordered a red bulb from the bay, these lights have definetaly been one of my best purchases so far!
Just wanted to let you guys who are thinking of getting these, that they are great quality and fit etc. hth

Ive temporarily painted the fog light with red paint, and ive ordered a red bulb from the bay, these lights have definetaly been one of my best purchases so far!
Just wanted to let you guys who are thinking of getting these, that they are great quality and fit etc. hth

Cal

did you do any wiring mods? if you did, some quick guide will help us future buyers..

They were from the guy on ebay who people thought sounded dodgy as he wanted payment via bank transfer, but I have bought off him in the oast and he is a trustworthy guy. He could only do bank transfer at the time as he was having issues with paypal but it is all sorted now.

Anyway, I'm really pleased with the lights and they look ace

They look great.
Did they need coding or are they plug and play?
Are they RHD lamps ie reverse light on the left and fog on the right?
How much did they cost including delivery?
Thanks

They are plug and play no coding needed and no error messages

They are RHD, Reverse light is indeed on left and fog on the right

Delivery was free and they were £280 and he can get more of them.

They do look identical to OEM in my humble opinion

He says he'll have some more in a couple of weeks. He also said he had 1 set left which had very light scratches on one of the inner lamps which he said would probably polish out.
He wanted £260 collected for them which I thought was steep!
He was selling undamaged ones delivered for £289

What colour is your reverse lamp?
If all the lamps are correct apart from a white foglamp then is it just a case if buying a red bulb?
Is the reverse light on the left and is it white?

Got a reply from the Ebay seller, so good news, well kind of. This was their reply:

"Hello,
We are so, so sorry for this mix up. We ordered these lights but we have ordered the wrong spec, which means they are indeed left hand drive. This is totally our fault, and we cannot be more sorry for this inconvenience.
The fog light is easily solved by getting a red bulb, but the reverse light is LED which means it cannot be changed.
We have tried to source the right hand drive version but they are yet to be imported, which means the only option is to collect them from you to exchange for a full refund.
Please can you name a day where somebody is available all day for collection?
Can you also kindly please put your eBay ID in the box, with a short note saying why they're being returned.
Please accept our sincerest apologies. Unfortunately there was one letter difference between both products.

So i will be sending them back, still on the hunt for RHD at £300, ive asked them if they will be getting RHD in. awaiting reply.

I've took a chance on the second set I listed earlier.
They are LHD but say reverse and foglamp are halogen so hopefully just a quick bulb swap.
They come from Romania but are made by dectane.

Also new to the tail light party.
Just read through the whole post. Would I be right in saying the genuine led lights (which would come as standard on a 2011 Golf Gti) 'CANNOT' be purchased from a proper Volkswagen dealer even for a price? Sorry if I missed this in a previous post.
Thanks..

The part numbers for the darker R lights are:

5K0 945 093 Q (Inner Light)
5K0 945 094 Q (Inner Light)
5K0 945 095 Q (Outer Light)
5K0 945 096 Q (Outer Light)

You'll be looking at around £430 from a dealer and you'll need a set of adapters which are available on ebay around £30.

You'll need the adapters as the connection for a halogen light is different to the one on the LED lamp, these:

Connectors on your existing tail light (halogen bulbs) are not the same as the new LED units, thus the adaptors.
You also have to check if your BCM revision accepts LED, so u can remove bulb error light on your dash by coding it. Cars after Sept 2009 build has the correct module, for build before that you've to change the BCM unless you had xenons on the front.

I'm not too bothered and very happy with them.

This is the bulb holder I ordered
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00967V7BO
Although its taken nearly 4 weeks to arrive.
I used the original fog lamp bulb which came with the lights.
I then checked the wiring to find which wire was live etc.
in the plug that goes to the orange resister block the green is live and white is earth.
I then looked at the rear of the lamp and where the led is there's a lamp reflector, I didn't split the lamp I just levered that up at one side to break it off, once I'd done that I filed it away to make it smooth and so It doesn't foul the new bulb holder.
Once enough clearance was there I fitted the bulb holder and chopped the wire going to the red led.
I then connected my new bulb holder to the connector which used to run to the orange resister.
Bingo that was it.
Took 20 mins to do.
I was in two minds about having to break the reflector part but there's no other way to do it. Once filed it looks like its alway been like that, although its not visible from outside anyway.

Marshy said it was easy, i didnt find it all that easy. Its not thats its hard, you just have to go nice and easy. I used a flathead screwdriver and just levered it back and forth till it cracked and snapped in small pieces. Then pull all the broken bits out through the hole. It feels like your gonna break it.

Once its all out, i just connect the wires to the end of the resistor wires (gold  bit with red wires) pushed into the connectors so it had full contact with the plates and then just hot glue gunned it in place. Tested and all working sweet.

Glad i had the balls to do it, as i was thinking i would have to keeping swapping lights over for MOT. Any problems just give us a shout.

they need coding, adapters and (depending on the year of your car) a new lighting module.

Have you had these pryda? My car is 2009 gti I called them today and all the guy said was they just need vagcom coding. What adapters and light module would be required? Should they not supply these with the lights? Cheers

I don't have these lights, but as said I think the lights from Car Systems come with kufatec adapters.

iirc, pre-2010 models require a lighting module as well as coding

What does that lighting module do? I'm booking it in with my mechanic to have them fitted and coded at the same time but I don't want to find when he is finished they need the module and get charged twice. Do you think I should just order? Poached what year is your car and did you need the lighting module? Cheers

I didn't need a new module, just coding but mines a 59 plate.

I could send a phone pic but it would look no different to a Google image of the lights.

Some info that may help on the BCM Module here:

The drivers side lights up when the fog light is on. The guy at car systems seems to think I need a bcm module which he has told me to take to vw and have fitted n coded or it might just need more coding. Any ideas guys?
