Title: Trade in Price...
Post by: ajmoir36 on 22 May 2013, 17:17
I'll start it off with what I have been offered...

7.5% discount and £11,500  for September delivery for my GTD April 2010 with 55k miles, full VWSH.

Will I be buying a mk7 I think that's a confirmed NO.

Personally I think that's a fair trade price for your car considering that it's done a few miles. It's worth what it's worth dictated by what they are making at auction. You've been offered a reasonable discount off the list price of the new car, so can't expect an over allowance on yours as well. That would be like having two lots of discount.

But given the September delivery he probably deserves two discounts!

By September, the car will be another plate change older and be nudging 60,000 miles. That needs to be factored in as well.

How much was the car new? £24k? If so, that's a 48% retained value which to me is pretty good all things considered.

With all the options it would have been 27.5k new fortunately I didn't pay that. That's why there's a  look only 42% then. Cost of change is 16k, which to me is too much to pay. I could buy a used mk6 GTI for that and have some fun instead. What will be interesting to see is what other brands will give for it.

Still not bad considering it'll be 3.5 years old and done above average mileage.

The thing is, that whilst VW's do have strong residuals in terms of percentage, because the list price is comparatively high, the actual monetary depreciation is large due to being a percentage of a bigger number to begin with.

Nice cars cost, there's just no getting away from that.

Sell it on autotrader. You'll get far more than that.

Selling privately will always get you the best deal, even if it means buying a cheap car as a stop gap.

With your car having such a low mileage and having been supplied by them, they'll happily keep it for retail stock.

Me too, I can't see them selling that on for more than £16k at absolute maximum (depending on options)and most dealers would be looking to make more than £1800 on a £16k car taking into account your low mileage. Parkers info below on an 09 plate GTI 3 door manual with many more miles than you:-

Original Price £22,415
Franchised Dealer £13,985
Independent Dealer £13,590
Private Good £12,930
Private Poor £11,270
Part Exchange £12,135
The prices above are based on:

A mileage of 40,000 (average for age)

Options selected: None
