Good find, looks ace.
-
That looks very smart! Those calipers look painted to me.
Lovin those wheels!
-
Don't be getting no ideas....I might get abit jealous :lipsrsealed:
-
That looks friggin 'Awesome'... Nice combination of Pano Roof, Oryx paint & Wheels.
-
Is that real? Almost looks photo-shopped. Like a picture of a car has been inserted onto some background elements...
-
Must resist urge to... add... Pano... Roof...
-
Can't see GTD on the calipers..

It does state in the brochure (book of lies?) that the calipers are grey on the GTD hinting at they're painted.
Ok, I'm sold, shove the GTI with PP (Neil Birkitt not oversold on PP anyway in their review and his words are not to be sniffed at) and get me a GTD with a pano roof....

The Pano roof looks a bit odd to me covering half the roof. It looks good head on but from above its slightly strange looking. Okay, to be fair who sees their car from above but i'm not sure i would pay nearly a grand for it. Now a fully fitted carbon roof would be awesome and i believe it's still being considered by VW - probably bloody expensive mind you.
-
Very Nice
Ordered mine today, can't wait.
Anybody on here found a road test yet?

I like the never ending wind screen look but as you said cost is the biggest reason I haven't specced this. Definately makes my 'love to have but not at that price' list.

Yip I know that list well. Mine would have inluded the 19" Santiagos as they look awesome but I wanted the sat nav pro even more which was pretty expensive to say the least
-
Fantastic picture. That exactly what I'm getting, can't wait!!
-
Why d'ya have to go and post a picture like that? I want mine now!!!

The pano roof is actually one aspect of the car/options that I don't like. If it extended all the way into the rear screen it "might" look OK, but from the front it looks a bit odd, and then stops part way along the roof creating a lack of symmetry.
-
Like the Santiago wheels but did not consider as just love the standard set :) and just love the new lines of the MK7 GTi/GTD with their body kits, really nice presence with the white working so well with the black trim and privacy glass and as a final comment like the way the chrome trim crosses into headlights in same way red line does on GTi - works in it's more understated way
Nice to see one taken in this manner except for making 5 months from now seem so much longer away!
-
That does look nice!

Can somebody in the know please confirm if the wheels pictured are the standard wheels that uk customers will get? ie with the black backs, or do we get the ones pictured on the vw configurator that don't look that good to me!
Cheers in advance.
-
If you look on the German configurator, the car comes as standard with 17" "Curitiba" alloys. These look exactly like the ones on the UK configurator. You can upgrade to 18" Nogaros (EUR 600 or so) and these have the black bits in them.
There are pictures on the UK web site in the gallery section showing the Nogaros, and it does say that the alloys are 18". Given the poor show VW UK have made thus far it wouldn't surprise me if they got the wrong images in the configurator.

These wheels look exactly like the standard 18" wheels on the configurator.
I ordered a 5 door GTD with the standard wheels, Oryx white with sunroof,so was glad to see some real pictures.
Just for information I did try to add the 19" wheels but the configurator would only add them if I deleted the sunroof. I emailed VW and was told that the combined weight of the 19" alloys and the sunroof put the car over the CO2 bandings, must be related to the weight.
I think the 19" wheels would have looked awesome, but I liked the sunroof so stuck with that!

Must resist colour change. :undecided:

Could have had a manual standard out of the box GTi but I would have had to really pay for it in overall costs where as I get the GTD with DSG & 5 Door + additional options at minimal cost to me and with even more saving in running cost and having seen it in white in how it accentuates all the black features including rear tint, I was completely sold that made right decision :) - I like the Santiago but must say if the Norgaro were option I would be tempted as best 'standard' wheels I have seen for a while and think really work with the white also given the black inserts - Looking forward to when GTD comes into spotlight for reviews etc.
-
That looks like Limestone grey, which to my eyes looks more bronze than grey in the metal. Not my cuppa to be honest.

It it a lease/company car based on CO2? If so, I guess it makes sense over a GTI. Still not convinced by the running-cost savings relative to new car ownership in general, but each unto their own on how to justify something!

The company car C02 and petrol costs is purely why I've ordered a GTD.
I'd love a GTI but can't justify the extra running costs.

Additional cost for vehicle + a lot heavier C02 charges and then running costs make it a no brainer for Company Car folk - Would I like the red stripe and red tartan seats and all the red bits that shout GTi? Of course, there is the added prestige on that alone :) but I know the GTD looks great too and that my driving experience is going to pretty damn good as basically getting pretty much same car with plenty of performance still on tap just with lower costs across board.

Exactly, i'm going from a 143bhp Mini to 184ps. So i'm getting a decent chunk of extra power and torque.
The GTD this time round looks almost identical to the GTI except the red line and the split exhaust at the rear. I've got Leather so the red tartan doesn't affect me.
I actually prefer the standard GTD alloys. All GTI's for the past 7 years seemed to have the same ones.

Yes it is, and if see the numbers there is a huge difference not just a few pennies and that is in comparison with a GTD that has DSG 5 Door Sat Nav Winter Pack and ACC added.

I like the GTi alloys they are classic GTi and if were going for a GTi would be something I would not even think to change as look to stay classic.
Like the Santiago also but would not put either over the standard GTD which when compare to many standard alloys across makes are very much are not the poor relation and best I seen for a long while on base spec.

Personally I don't like the 19" Santiago at all - way too busy, and being available on both, they lose out as a differentiator. The standard GTI wheels look different enough to the Monzas of the past two generations, but retain that familiar, distinct look.

I was not a fan of the Monza's on the Mk5 and Mk6 as i didn't like dial effect however the new ones are sharper if that makes sense. I do like the santiago's but not enough to pay £1000

Yeah that makes sense. Of the Monzas, I preferred the look of the 18" Shadows with the black insets, but these new wheels really look the part. They definitely pass the "how do they look in that shop window as I pull away slowly?" test!
-
I think all three wheel designs are pretty smart, and am really looking forward to seeing some additional dealer photos of the GTD alloys.

There's only 3% bik difference between the gti and gtd. plus given the mpg of the gti and the cheaper petrol costs over diesel the calcs work out at just 0.025p per mile extra for a 40% tax payer for the gti.

A lot of companies offer incentive to select lower emmisions vehicles, so higher the C02 the lesser the ££ get to spend or the more you may have to add personally to bridge the difference - So it may vary by company but my personal circumstance meant a heavy fee to have standard out of box manual 3 door GTi to a low overall one in taking the GTD with DSG 5 Door + Options.

Are not the company car tax bands (VED) very different compared to privately owned cars as well? If I'm talking out of my ass ignore me.

went and had a look at a 3 door GTI today in night blue (having seen a red more on the move earlier) and have to say its a really nice car inside and out and my wife needs one in her life but the wheels are going to have to go

PS: There is a Wallpaper option and you get some great detailed photos that show it off beautifully

Loving those wheels - first time ever I haven't felt robbed on the wheels compared to the GTI offering. I can't help feeling what a bugger it will be to polish and wax the front bumper without getting any product on the black fins that lead to the foglights. Those side badges still look sh!te IMO.
-
sorry to offend anyone who hasn't ordered white but looking at the pictures white is the best colour to have. just looks fantastic whatever angle.
-
monkeyhanger........you not like the GTi wheels?
I might consider a swap for my GTD one's.
Does anyone know if it is a straight swap?

I'm thinking you got the wrong end of the stick with what I meant. I like the GTD wheels more than the GTI wheels - usually GTI gets better wheels. The cost to upgrade to Santiagos is same for GTI and GTD, implying that both GTI and GTD wheels are worth the same. Extremely doubtful if VW would supply a GTI with GTD wheels or vice versa. The later showroom pics of that Tornado Red really pop. Really need to see one outside with the right products applied.
-
By way, in the higher detail photos you can clearly see the grey painted calipers - Really like the whole look of the GTD :)

Dunno what to make of all the comments being made on there (apparently mostly Americans). A whole lot of BS and Ford/VW fan boy poo flinging by a bunch of people who seem not to have driven either a GTI or an ST but enjoy to make fatuous comments to back up simplistic assertions that which ever car they personally prefer/happen to own, crushes/destroys/dethrones/humiliates (strike out verb which do not apply) the other car...
I bet their collective average age is 15... 10 years above their collective average mental age. Unfortunately the same seems to be true of the comment section of any car on any review site.

I don't have pictures (the missus left her mobile at home and I don't use one) but I have at last sat in a GTI so I could check the switchgear and driving position out. Was a little worried that the gearstick wasn''t as ergonomic as the "Golf/Scirocco R" one I fitted to the Roc. It is, I can confidently stick it on ebay and put the original one back in the Roc before I p/x it rather than keeping it for the GTD.
I was at Benfield Scotswood Road, Newcastle after a visit to the Metrocentre and Costco. They have a pure white 5 door manual GTI there with keyless. They weren't offering test drives until next week so i'm booked in for a Saturday morning session. Right next to it they had a fully loaded 5 door Golf GT in Tornado Red with the wheels that look like the Nogaros (17" Singapores) - it looked very much like how I imagine my GTD to be looking like externally. Scotswood Road branch gets a massive amount of natural light in and the Tornado Red was looking amazing in the flesh under those conditions.
The missus jumped in the drivers seat and liked it a lot. She then decided to jump into the showroom Scirocco after never having sat in the drivers seat of mine (she doesn't drive - we're looking to change that) and said "why are you changing? That GTI is good, but this looks and feels better". I shook my head at her, then made arrangements for the test drive next week with the woman who sold me my first Scirocco. She was quite honest about lead times saying that one ordered now wouldn't be sen before the end of September (I resisted saying "yes, I know").
On the drive home we saw an immaculate Lupo GTI in a dark metallic grey - looked brand new. Why they stopped building those when it still looks fresher than a Fox or UP is beyond me, i'd have a new one tomorrow if they were still available and balls to the practicality of a Golf - imagine one of those with a current 1.4 140 or 180PS unit in it?
-
get some pictures up asap
-

Very occasionally not having a mobile does have it's downside, and as the missus' phone isn't religiously carried at all times (as in this case).
-
what did you think of the white Matthew? truthfully haha
-
Ive had a kick nosey and a sit in this car.
Fantastic interior, I'm just not sold on the 5 door looks.
-
what did you think of the white Matthew? truthfully haha
Nice, but not as nice as the Red (IMO). Both of those cars were within a few feet of a westerly facing wall of glass at 1pm - couldn't have been any more natural light on them inside the dealership. I suppose the measure of the white is that I generally don't like white cars but I could've lived with one in white if mine turned up mistakenly in that colour - that shade of white (not sold on warm whites like "candy"). The Golf suits a cold/neutral white.
I do sometimes think that for cars of all marques, white is the cheap option (obviously not so for VW now when it's half the cost of metallic), and as soon as it's not we'll see fewer of them on the road (again I talk about all marques). In Tornado Red I have done the cheap option on paper, but it is my favourite shade to live with every day. I started oout with a DBP colour choice, but it would pain me to look at that between weekly washes when the dust and grime build up and kill that mirror sheen. Some people choose white in the least suited of cars. Ever seen a white A5? White Jag? I see people in cars like that all the time and they really look sh!te, for a few hundred quid saved. If whites weren't so prevalent everywhere I might've been tempted to get one, but I really didn't want to add to the sea of white that is out there (about 60% of cars under 3 years old within 1/4 mile of my house are white, including an S5)
I think that generally White and Red are suited to small cars or medium cars that have small car proportions (like Golfs).
One more thing about the GTI - loving the black rooflining - only available on my Roc with TDI if I were to pay for black leather.
