Recently took car to bodyshop for an estimate for couple of things that need sorting. As a repair to a dent will require painting, I've also asked for a price to have rear diffuser painted black. Never liked that plasticky grey. Still waiting for price.
However assessor said that he'd need to check into whether it could be painted as apparently some diffusers emit something that can affect adherence of paint. Anyone heard of this? Or is he talking out of his ar*e?
Also would painting it affect warranty? I know they'd have to prove that painting it had contributed to a failure (highly unlikely), but what about paintwork warranty?
Finally, what price would be reasonable for this job?
Thanks
-
I've never heard anything like that and have seen rear diffusers painted gloss black before now, so it can't cause too many issues.
can't see how it would affect the paintwork warranty either, but always best to enquire at the dealers.
-
They can be removed so can be replaced if it ever needed to be but as pryda says loads of people have had then painted gloss black or grey, if you do a search on here you'll find them.
I think he's talking out his @rse tbh! ;D
-
I had my rear diffuser painted gloss black and also had the side skirts colour coded on a brand new car.
It should not affect the bodywork warranty. At worse case, they won't cover the painted parts

I work for a company who paint plastic components for (mostly exterior) the automotive industry, should just need an adhesion promoter or special primer as the diffuser is like to be polyprop or PP. This usually needs flaming (in the industry) or an adhesion promoter will make the paint stick.... Without these on polyprop there's a risk the paint will flake off, especially when put under the pressure of a jet washer.

what about vinyl wrap? I'm looking to have mine done is gloss carbon to look like this:

Don't know much about vinyl wraps, thing is if it doesn't work you haven't ruined your diffuser... you'd just be left where you started.

Thats the OSIR one, it's moulded carbon and megabucks! Looks the nuts though! 8)

PS having to use an adhesion promoter or other primer shouldn't really have a great impact on the price, the cost for the adhesion promoter shouldn't really be any more than the basecoat... in my experience.

yeah it is. about 400 notes aren't they? there's a place by me that does good carbon wraps so hopefully it won't look much different. I just hope the wrap doesn't turn yellow under the heat

wrap does not tend to adhere to diffusers etc, mines been painted for a year and fine, i bought a spare so still have the original one should i need to put it on
-
Thanks for all the replies guys.
Cosmicremedy - thanks for the helpful info about polyprop. That's most likely what assessor was talking about and restores my confidence that they actually know their stuff
Pryda and Jimble - yeah have seen loads of gloss black ones on here and think they look good.
I've seen the OSIR carbon one and though it's nice, tbh I'm not a big fan of the carbon look and at £400-500 - no thanks!
Wigit - good point about wrap. When you had yours painted, did you use a primer; what paint was used and how much was spare diffuser? Lots of questions
Undecided as yet but will wait to see what price bodyshop comes back with and what they say about primer.
Also depends on how much they're gonna fleece me for on the other work
-
i think a spare is under £70 from VW, the guys who sprayed mine had done the diffuser and side skirts on Revo's mk6, a decent bodyshop will charge £120-£150
-
Mines painted, no issues. The part is held on by half a dozen torque screws and it costs about £100. Mine cost me £150 to be painted.

Had quote back today.
Quoted the ridiculous price of £287 for painting rear diffuser (includes primer)
Other work came in at £698 which was about what I expected. Plus £88 for wheel alignment.
Will go ahead with the other repairs and alignment but not paying over the odds for the diffuser so will leave that for now. Just had an emergency vets bill for £1,300 too. Bloody pets!

I had my diffuser, side trims, front lip and mirror backs done in a metallic grey...and I'm pleased with how they came out.

That's ridiculous! Can't believe it soooooo much more than mine.

How about a Golf R Cabriolet rear diffuser? It would probably cost less than spraying the standard one and could be sold again when the car goes so the original one could then be refitted.
Just a thought...
-
Hasn't that got centre exit exhausts?
-
No, aren't the the exhausts on the cab R at either side but tail pipes are different shape so maybe not fit a gti?? :undecided:

Yes they're oval, possibly sharing the Scirocco R rear exhaust box (feeling like a real anorak now!!!) but the cutouts look similar to the standard diffuser from photos.
And unless you live in a small area of London, part of Essex or maybe Poole I doubt you'll see enough R Cabs to get to check properly!!

Must be where all the hairdressers live

Has anybody painted their diffuser body colour (apart from black) ?

Has anybody painted their diffuser body colour (apart from black) ?
Asker painted his a dark grey colour (similar to the front lower grille trim) which looked excellent on his red car.
