hope this doesnt come across as the usual question but here goes.
yes ive read prawnys guide  but
im aware that the THS intercooler is a beastie kit and is a great fit etc should be for the money! and is a twin bypass type intercooler.
now im wanted to make a universal one fit instead. ive seen loads of kits listed to fit the mk4 golf. but the one thing i cant seem to get a 100% answer on is this.... do these ebay kits actually include everything you need to fit to the golf and i know the ads say they do but ive learnt in past before to double check these things. i know things need cutting and moving about etc but in sense of is the kit complete anyone know. for arguement sakes
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-VW-GOLF-MK4-MKIV-GTi-1-8T-20v-SKODA-OCTAVIA-FRONT-MOUNT-INTERCOOLER-KIT-FMIC-/380446983649?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item58946845e1
would that fit?
my next issue is id really like to copy the THS design as it seems a neater and much less ''miles' of pipes and joins design. the link above seems to have so much joins and pipes that me and me dad were going to go for a kit like
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110715725917?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
and seemed a less to go wrong kit :undecided:
power wise stage 2 is where i stop so 230bhp mark is where im aiming.
any links to kits people have fitted on without big issue please say as im looking to order very soon
-
first one looks like a copy of the toyosport one, I have the toyosport one on my car, kind of small but seems to be ok. fitments ok, bumper needs a tiny bit of a trim, but most front mounts do when fitted to a mk4.

and was you kit complete to fit to car? and did you get good results from it?
-
I didn't look.that closely but the ebay type kits tend to have small tubing.
For what it costs I would honestly go the welly cooler route, I did and haven't looked back, I originally wanted to go the THS route, but they were on back order for about 2 months the time I was looking
-
what kit did you use?
-
The one in prawns thread/guide just made from bits off eBay and a universal core
-
hmmmmm so no simple ths kit then lol
-
It depends on what you want really the THS kit is expensive for what it is.
The welly cooler gives great cooling and with patience looks good to
-
but it just seems the welly cooler alot of pipes lol
prefered less from both on one side maybe im really wrong i dont know
-
Yep...... I've arrived!!!
I was gonna copy the ths one just like you but there are 2 pipes that can't be bought, one being the silicone bend with the extremely long leg in the crash bar, and the other is the metal pipe that passes over the pcr pipe that houses the map sensor.
Also the cooling properties of a single sided inlet/outlet intercooler aren't as good as the charged air can take a 'short cut' and not pass thru the whole cooler so potentially is a waste.
It can be a ball ache and you will prob have to get a different bumper (depending on the size of the cooler, if you have air con ect..) but tbh it'll be we'll worth it once its done.
-
I've had the same idea as you mate, I want something similar to the apr or ths kits. I found this core http://www.universal-intercoolers.co.uk/shop.php?Group=1 (the one at the bottom of the page) was just gonna fit the core and try and figure out the pipework afterwards. Planning on using some wire reinforced flexible silicone tube for the length that goes through the crash bar.

no way i want to lose my aircon......... or change bumper  so are we saying a toyosprts bog standard £150.00 kit will do the job if needed?

this one
http://www.toyosports.co.uk/fmic-vw-golf-jetta-mk4-18t-turbo-intercooler-kit-18699-630-p.asp
-
What turbo you got on it?
If your on about the one in the link for 190 that won't be great as the 2" piping is gonna be restrictive
(Looks the same as the link you just put up, so pipe work on hot side will be 2"..... Can't remember but think it was Dalo that had a kit similar to this and changed it because of going stage 2)
-
aum ko3s turbo.
me and me dad happy to spend time on fitting kit a nice ''summers'' day if they arrive just need to know what cost effective kit i can get that is complete i know ill need a sensor adaptor from forge that fine. it just the main kit we unsure on

There is literally only the brackets that hold the radiator on in place haha, the whole kit was bought off a member on here called TonysGTI, really good and a very good fit

Anyone know if the toyosports or turbo revs ebay kits fit the golf or is extras needed??

Have you run it with this on yet? the lag I think is going to be massive, those tubes look very small diameter

He took it out earlier today and he said it felt and pulled great, with it been my old car he let me have ago to compare... Personally I thought it pulled slightly better, didnt seem to have any more lag than before.. Think the pipes are 2.5 inch, he's only aiming for 230-235bhp, with the help of a ko3-s or ko4-001 so this set up should be more than enough :-)

could save your pennies and when you have under£600 you can get it THS fitted by R-tech...and a remap at the same time?
-
600+ remap cost too.
Im trying to get an interccoler fitted this summer ready for map. Again happy to fit a basic kit but if they terrible then eont. Just seen plenty of good power mk4s on what looks like basic fmics

I spoke to RTech a while ago and was told they no longer sell/supply the THS Intercooler :undecided:

I copied the THS design with an ebay intercooler and silicone hoses of ASH. I went for this cooler....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TwinPass-Intercooler-FMIC-Medium-65mm-inlets-225mm-high-Highly-Polished-/220967240092?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3372ac819c
As it is slightly smaller than some of the others so fits behind the crash bar (aum requires a bit of cutting) and I'm not hitting large power (running 200bhp) to warrent the beast intercooler. Depends what you want out of it. If you are gonna keep chasing power then go with prawny's set up. Regardless of the single/twin pass set up fitting a 'custom' intercooler like this will take a fair few hours so do it right the first time.
Here's how mine looks, although it looks dodgy in the photo it is perfectly straight ....

-
also the above cooler has a plate separating the inlet and outlet pipes so the air runs the whole intercooler  cost around £200 all in (the intercooler was on offer when I bought it)
-
Sorry Dave I've only just seen your PM. If you want any more info let me know
-
Well acording to the ebay seller im in contact with there 2.5" intercooler is a direct fit apart from map sensor hole . And thats a slim one that fits quite low.

Lools a good intercooler that. Dont supose you have a list of exactly what pipes you used on it?????
-
Yeah man, I used 2 90 degree silicone elbows, 1 90 degree aluminium elbow, 1 45 degree silicone elbow and 1 135 degree aluminium elbow. I have since gone back and added a straight coupler to give the 45 degree silicone elbow a bit of extra length to get to the intercooler, heres a pic of the pipes (minus the straight coupler):

Here's my FMIC:

Used audi a4 toyosport FMIC as its 2", then ordered a universal kit of 2" pipes from toyosports, which comes with loads of pipes and bends. Then I beaded the pipes with a tool I have a wollah.

Big help ill look and try and decide which to buy eith your THS rep or ebay full kit jobbie
