Title: Red jacara cloth - Is this a stupid question?
Post by: mortimerchris on 22 April 2013, 08:58
Hello there,

I have ordered leather for my GTI - I realise many including Auto Express would not agree with this decision.

However the standard Jacara seats are labelled 'cloth' and certainly look that way in many google images.
On the Auto Express review the pictures make it look like there is some leather (or maybe some king of plastic, not cloth) around the sides and back of the seats.

If this is the case then i may go with the majority and remove leather but if it is cloth all the way round then I will keep as is.  Let me know your thoughts, the link to the picture is below.

Some markets (including here in Ireland) give you the option of half leather / alcantara, with the jackara centres. A bit like the Edition 30 seats, looks great in pics I've seen.
Not a UK option.

I doubt anyone knows for certain, (including VW UK), but my guess as Joe says is that the Cloth / Leather / Alcantera seats shown on the Autoexpress review, are either conceptional only or available for other markets not the UK.

I would expect the cloth seats in the UK to be 100% cloth (as they appear on a number of other reviews). Would be delighted if it does comes with the combination interior though

I too would have liked the half leather seats, not sure if this will become an option soon.

Unfortunately for you Chris it looks like the UK market is destined for either all cloth or all leather seats. Have a look at the pics in the new GTI brochure (pdf) which show in good detail what the tartan cloth seats will look like.

I'm a big fan of the tartan, so can't wait for them myself. However, I think VW UK have missed a trick in not having part leather/alcantara & cloth seats. I'm sure many would have specced them if they were an option.

My order is showing the cloth ordered as 'Titan Black' - is this the same as the tartan?

I think Titan Black refers to the colour of the dashboard and interior trim.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from memory, I think Titan black is the colour of the black cloth fabric used on the seats (with tartan centre pieces used on bottom and back panels)

Jacara cloth all the way - I have full leather at the minute as I had no choice and definatinately wouldn't pay for it!

Cloth all the way here as well.  I've had cars with leather bolsters, and again, I'd rather not have them.  Just feels colder to the touch in winter, and are not heated like the rest of the seat.

Just a pity with the new seat design that the integrated headrest style of previous Golf's has not be maintained, its just like every other headrest - plonked on the top.  Design fopar in my eyes!

100% agree.

Helps set the top models apart from the lower spec Golf's. Missed opportunity me thinks.

I went leather.  Was easy decision.  My current car has leather and I love it.  Its four years old and looks brand new.  Feels great to sit in.  So easy to clean.  I also think it looks way better too.  Makes the interior look like a merc, I know the tartan is important to original GTI connoisseurs but I never owned a previous model of GTI so to me it just seems like a car with a weird looking interior.  Its like it makes the cabin too busy or cluttered.

Personal taste.

Design fopar in my eyes!

Is it a faux pas to spell "faux pas" incorrectly?

I must admit after seeing the leather in a new golf today I had second thoughts as it did look a bit crumpled.

As in an ideal word I'd have the tartan leather combo I'm still not going to change

If my leather does look bad ill soon let VW know about it!!

Err, no.
Its VW leather. Different class of cow.

And as for busy and cluttered - VW don't do busy and cluttered! They do restrained.
Still it's nice that we have the choice.
I've got leather now. I quite like it. But prefer the cloth.

Interesting that although the GTI has been in production for about 300 years that there are still people buying their first GTI (and I don't mean 18 year olds buying knackered mk4s).
I guess it offsets the previous owners that jumped ship to BMW after gouging their eyes out with hot pokers...

VW leather isn't good? I got leather in a ford fiesta and can't praise it enough, are you saying I'm gonna be disappointed with it in a GTI?

Best go find a Golf or Passat or Scirocco fitted with hide at your local dealer before signing away £1700.
It's ok, it's just not Rolls Royce quality.

A GTI without tartan is no GTI

I can't remember the price, but isn't it close to £1,700?  So, classic tartan seats with DCC and PP, or dull, cold/sticky leather!  Hmmm...

To be honest, I can't say I'm a big fan of the 'classic' tartan feature that emblazons the GTi brand. It looks a tad dated and ripe for a Saga Tours Coach Trip, All things said, a great looking car, and one I can't wait to get my hands on!

Morning,

I just noticed you have put customised red and black leather and it looks like your in Bristol.
I'm considering getting cloth and then having it trimmed in leather.

How are you getting yours done and at what cost?

Thanks

The sales rep at VW recommended a company from the North of England to carry out the refit. It will arrive at the dealership with the standard cloth seats; they will arrange for it to be sent north, stripped and fitted with the black and red leather. It should add an extra 2 weeks to our collection date. The cost is around £300 on top of the cost of the black vienna leather as quoted by VW (£1675).

I can't remember the name of the company, but the rep was very enthusiastic about them!

The design is based on the seats of the retro special edition 'Beetle cabriolet 50s'
