Ignoring the fact you can't spell 'surprised' - why wouldn't they be allowed to use an older car?  No different to controls on modern cars and a LOT cheaper for the instructor as he won't have any depreciation and technically you could service it yourself if you wanted, too.

I actually really like the idea of learning in something old like this and seeing it gave me a big grin - someone thinking outside the box.

Apologies for the spelling mistake, i guess i more or less assumed that there may be some issues regarding insurance for professional instructors using quite old cars.

Like Mr Hell i can see the attraction, especially for an instructor with mechanical knowledge who's just started out in business.

I'd like to see people learn in cars without all these fancy safety systems

My instructor had a 1.0 litre Polo which had no power steering or fancy traction control.  It helps you appreciate the limits of a car when its only you who can avoid an accident

also if the learner runs out of island  they can just sail round to a nearby slipway and have another go

Aren't mk3s limited to 4mph inland? just needs some tyres hanging from the side to make it the perfect learner car!

Spoke to a driving instructor today, there is no age limit on the type of car that can be used by a driving instructor in fact he told me that there is a fella in Exeter who uses a very clean and tidy 1975 mini.
