hi all, what is on average the kind of milages that these ABF engines tend to let go on? i know it depends on servicibg, how its driven etc but im just after a general sort of thing here. also ive read if you put the 1.8 kr cams in, it makes it a little more livley. how true is this? thanks!
-
Kr cams is a de tune as theres more lift on abf i donno about letting go but i would say rebuild at 180k miles
-
I've seen some still going at over 200,000 but I've seen couple with worn out shells at 120,000.
Go by the servicing.
Kr cams is not true!

As for the ABF, they are very strong engines
-
Define high mielage.
Mine is on 148k atm

Some of the aftermarket cams are designed for KR or ABF and in reality, aren't much more aggressive than standard ABF cams...so an utter waste of money.
-
Good point Len,
I would personally say 148,000 on your car is normal / average.
~90,000 miles and lower = low miles
high miles is ~180,000 & upwards.

I have tried all the VW cam swaps going in 8v and 16v versions, KR 9A PB ABF, nothing has worked as well as £600 spent with Mr Schrick on a pair of cams and vernier pulley.
My current 8v has 187k on the clock and the two valvers down't yard have 140k and 220k respectivley.
-
In order of hottest to mildest = ABF, KR, 9A
Obviously aftermarket items are available with more duration & lift,
but this was to originally answer that Dan had read KR cams were an upgrade over ABF, which is false.

Mine has 152k and my old one was about 170k both pulled nice
-
I would say that every engine that came in a MK3 are built to last.
As long as it's been looked after'd well
-
Mine has just ticked over 159k and is going strong!
-
Coming upto 170k miles, lots of history showing regular servicing and oil changes and mine is purring like a kitten....touch wood

I agree...best cams out there.

Sounds good to me mines at near 159k and since i have carried out a service its running sweet and quiet really pleased

My abf was on 170k when I pulled it out ,was a good engine still but could see some scouring on the cam lobes.
-
My .mk3 has close to 200,000 miles on it. Came with a thorough history and it still runs sweet!!
-
Mine is 30 miles shy of 170k, running sweet, getting 35 mpg on long run, but need to change the downpipe as slight blow... Regular oil changes and changing the cam belts are the key to long lasting engines

also a key to a good engine is not having it boy raced to the rev limiter all the time that wears the engine

I seriously ragged the sh!t out of my old MK2's, its all about servicing that keeps them running strong
