Title: Which tyres are best?
Post by: Colandnat on 01 April 2013, 10:14
My Bridgestones are not at their best and it will soon be time to say goodbye. Question:- Do I replace with the same or go for something else, say the Michelin SuperSport. Any help from members would be much appreciated. Cheers.(http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Colandnat/9E7763D5-08FE-46FD-B340-EDE2CFB36AEE-203-0000002CA6EB2F90_zps5f446677.jpg)

I don't like mis matching tyres so I always rotate my wheels to wear evenly

You usually get deals on 4 tyres so its more cost effective to change 4 tyres at once.

If you only have to change say the fronts I would keep them all the same or if you need to do all 4 get something better like Goodyear eagle asymmetrical or conti SC3 or something.

I recommend the goodyear f1 asymmetric2 - 225 40 r18 92yxl, asda surprisingly do the best deal on them at the minute, £123 a corner and you get them fitted at halfords, who by the way price match. If you know someone who will fit them I find camskill cheapest at £102.50, hope this helps.

But would you really trust Halfords with your diamond cut wheels?

No cos they damaged my clio cup wheel when fitting some tyres. I wouldn't use halfords again.

Got £60 off them for cost of refurb though. No that they had any choice as I refused to pay them and I had already had my keys given back to me so was ready to just drive off without paying anything at all unless they knocked £60 off

And that was my next question, who would you trust with those lovely wheels?(http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Colandnat/9E7763D5-08FE-46FD-B340-EDE2CFB36AEE-203-0000002CA6EB2F90_zps5f446677.jpg)

Just changed my front tyres on the Ed35 from the factory fit Dunlop SportMaxx to Goodyear F1 Eagle Assymetric 2, what a difference, was never confident with the Dunlops and as the mileage went on the grip got worse, changed them out at 9000mls.
First impressions on the Goodyears is all good news, they just feel a better tyre.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2's. I've not got them yet, but should hopefully be getting them in the near future. These are the tyres which most guys on here recommend.

Fantastic tyres, not cheap though.

1 more for the Goodyear F1 Eagle Assymetric 2. Excellent tyre

Totally agree F1's not cheap but so far much better than factory fit Dunlops.
VW dealer originally quoted £298, I said that's a good price until he said thats for each one, I told him he should be wearing a mask

Eventually got the Eagle F1's from local tyre dealer who supplied and fitted two new front tyres for £300.

Title: Re: Which tyres are best?
Post by: Snooze on 10 April 2013, 13:24
Wow that sounds a bit steep. My local tyre fitter does 18" GY EF1's assym 2's fitted for £126 a corner.
Title: Re: Which tyres are best?
Post by: sve170 on 10 April 2013, 14:14
Yes a bit steep but wheels are 19's and I am in Aberdeen where everything is expensive, but compared with the VW stealer they were a bargain
Title: Re: Which tyres are best?
Post by: Mr GTD on 10 April 2013, 15:00
Yep the £125 a corner is priced on 18s so I wud imagine 19s wud be a little dearer as you said, worth every penny in my view...
Title: Re: Which tyres are best?
Post by: Snooze on 10 April 2013, 18:21
Oh I see didn't realise you had 19's. £300 doesn't sound too bad then!

Really interesting reading here guys.

I am a real Conti fan, but had PS2's and PS3'S on the Mk5 before going to Conti's, and then the Mk6 came on Conti's, but I have so often been tempted by Goodyears, so I reckon a change may be in the offing.

They may even tempt me off the planned purchase of the Nankang ditchfinders .... (not really)

My front tyres are nearly on the marker. Are they still legal or should I change them ASAP?

 Conti all the way.

German engineered, not always made in Germany though.

I'm going to get a pair of the Goodyear F1 A2s as my fronts are looking a bit worn and I don't want to wait until they're at the limit.

Do they have any rim protection on them (one redeeming feature I like about the Potenzas!!) as I can't find any info on the web.

Excellent tyre.

Why not Conti 5?

Excellent tyre.
I only needed one due to a puncture. The other three are all Conti 3s and I wanted a match.
What I wanted and what I got weren't quite the same!!

I'm going to try Conti5's. However I looked at mytyres yesterday they were £126, I looked this afternoon they were £175, just checked again and they're now £132. It's like the bloody Golden Shot
