Title: Why Oh Why Oh Why ?
Post by: welshdean on 30 March 2013, 14:45
Im having a naightmare with this car
I seem to be taking one step forward and two steps back.

Ive gone out in the car earlier and car was driving fine, went over a speed bump a little bit too quick and heard a wallop.
It was nothing extreme and i wasnt exactly doing 90 over the f**k*r.

But i drove it about 3 miles and had the..... "STOP, OIL PRESSURE TOO LOW ", light come ontothe panel and an oil light came on.
I drove the car home and just went out to check the oil level once the car had gone cold.

This is when i was greeted by an oil leak, i had a look and can see it dripping from somewhere but dont know exactly where as i cant get under the car to check.

Could anybody tell me where its likely to be coming from and what could be my problem ?

All help appreciated

p.s.... as you know by now, im not very mechanically minded so im clueless apart from looking on the net.

sump is lowest part containing oil so I would agree that you smashed it

How much are sumps to replace roughly and do I need anything else to go with it.

Oil pick up pipe and if your doing it yourself a 5mm? I think ball headed allen bit

Would an oil pick up pipe cause oil to be leaking onto the floor ?
Title: Re: Why Oh Why Oh Why ?
Post by: AD1.8T on 30 March 2013, 15:15
No is the simple answer ! You hit the bottom of your car on a speedbump ..... Expect damage
Title: Re: Why Oh Why Oh Why ?
Post by: welshdean on 30 March 2013, 15:23
Where do they usually crack to because it's leaking from the back of the sump
Title: Re: Why Oh Why Oh Why ?
Post by: hardmonkeys on 30 March 2013, 15:24
It was either a high speed bump, your car is too lowered...or you were going some speed to hit a speedbump And damage the sump, most damage I've had over a speedbump is scrape something underneath.

You could attempt to take the council to court over it, after all if its too high, it's their fault...but other people would of had the same damage or more...

If it were me..I'd slow down!!

The easy answer is...they don't normally crack! Only if they are 'walloped' against a hard surface...

I'd like to see anyone try and win that one :lipsrsealed:

It does indeed sound like you've cracked your sump, to be honest they don't take a lot to break so if it came into contact with a speed bump I'm not surprised.

You'll need a new sump and sealant, it will also be worth changing the pickup pipe whilst your there

You've probably knocked the lead off the Sensor at the bottom of the sump. I did the same a few weeks ago which brought up low oil pressure. Leak is probably a cracked sump!
Title: Re: Why Oh Why Oh Why ?
Post by: welshdean on 30 March 2013, 16:15
Is there anything I can use to possibly put into the oil to seal the sump atall or some way to seal this mysterious leak.

I was thinking along the lines of radweld
Title: Re: Why Oh Why Oh Why ?
Post by: Chris#101 on 30 March 2013, 16:18
I guess you could use evo stick liquid.metal but the.sump would still have.to come.off and wouldn't.be a guaranteed.fix
Title: Re: Why Oh Why Oh Why ?
Post by: hardmonkeys on 30 March 2013, 16:19
Radweld....really lol??

You need a new sump mate..radweld blocks SMALL water leaks...

Drain the remaining oil..remove the sump..clean it up, see if you see a crack, if not..fill with water..see if/where it leaks..if its confirmed a crack...you need a new sump

I dont mean to be blunt but take it to a garage and pay the price, removing the sump isnt the hardest of jobs but i can see the outcome a mile off!

Stop being a tit !

Not everybody in the world know how to identify individual sounds of moving parts in a cars engine, so how the f**k do I know what I'm looking for ?

Also, if I'm out in the car and it comes up with a symbol on the dashboard, what do you expect me to do ?... Pay through the nose and get the car towed away for extortionate amounts of money.

I would have come onto here and told you that I got my car towed away, 5 miles from home because a light showed on the dashboard and somebody would have told me that it would have been fine to drive.

My point is....

There wouldn't be a forum with different sections if everybody had the answers they needed.

And if this place didn't provide misleading information on every different topic then I would use the seach button more frequently.

So you will have to excuse me for asking questions but I genuinely thought somebody might be able to help !!

Yes the questions been answered a fair few times but that's because those replies are posted for no reason. If you read the post and see the answer, why repost that particular answer.

But what havnt been answered is.......

If I put a new sump on, and sealant, put fresh oil in the engine, will this stop the low pressure light and stop the ticking noise

Yes!! low pressure light is on...because there is no oil to push around the engine....the ticking noise is the valves stems bouncing off the camshaft...oil acts as a coolant too, so make sure you put the correct amount in...I'm new to mk4s so no idea how much to add...Might aswell change the filter while u r there

Barrym381,

Yes I have checked but I've come up with a few possible problems for low oil pressure alone.

1. Oil pressure switch
2. Oil pump
3. Oil pickup pipe
4. Oil pressure sensor

And now I've got an oil leak and not being able to see where it's coming from, it's awkward to diagnose. Hence all the questions.

Not being mechanically minded, I didn't know if the leak could be from somewhere else apart from the sump.

So get off your high horse and put down the shandy, there's a good boy

Title: Re: Why Oh Why Oh Why ?
Post by: gm8 on 30 March 2013, 20:55
raise the car at the front , wipe away any oil with kitchen roll etc and then look see were it keeps coming from.

I believe hitting the speedbump and anything other than the sump would be a mjassive coincidence.

hope this helps.

You hit a speedbump...and all of a sudden you have an oil leak, and a low pressure warning...coincidence maybe...but I doubt it, sorry mate...

I understand that, but being a mk4 section I thought people would have had experienced this before. As the mk4 golfs sumps may be quite weak. Just like I found out that the mk4 golf have common problems with leaks.

So when the sump is hit, there might be a certain section that is prone to splitting or similar.

"surely, your not that stupid either "

most probably have but it would help if you looked at the sump for any damage before asking any1   the sump is not that big so you wont have to check much an if you have damaged it then this is probably why you have no oil pressure as there is no oil in it  so get off your lazy arse go check

just run the engine till its really hot and all the offending oil has escaped. Then flush come ice cold water into the oil filler cap and look for the steam vent , this will definitely highlight the leak.........................................................

If you are replacing the sump and as you have damaged this one, go for the reinforced version with steel on the bottom.

Think you can get them from awesome gti but that would be the last place to get anything from.....

I have to completely disagree with that! Yeah there set website prices are pretty insane but if you do abit of digging and find any legit place that sells the exact same same thing for less they will undercut whoever it is usually by about £10/20. For example my weitecs were up for 520 ish at the time dpm had them some where around the £400 mark so they done them for £390 posted and chucked in a poly dogbone bush kit lol
