Title: bottom heat shield on cat rattling-solved-removed
Post by: Jasikasisback on 29 March 2013, 23:48
the lower heat shield on the cat is rattling. the front of it has seperated and is hanging down slightly. this may be dangerous if it catches and the force sends it into the cat??

i was wondering if i can just use a coathanger to tie it to the exhaust. i know the cats get quite hot and it might just come apart.would it pass the mot without the heat shield and if removed would the cat heat up enough to pass emissions testing/ function properly?

i will not be welding anything on this car if i can help it until after mot(if it passes) in july.

Its not heavy enough to damage the cat and i shouldn't think its an mot failure unless the whole thing is detached, i use very small nyloc nuts to secure the heat shields back up on mine as it seems to work and its a bit tidyer than bits of old wire.

As long as you don't mind setting fire to your carpets.

No it will be fine, it doesn't get that hot. Also you still have the long shield that runs inside the tunnel.

Do you unplug all eletrical items when its thunder and lightening too? Lol

Very very very very unlucky for it to make any difference to cabin temps let alone set carpet on fire..

mpg the same as before. when it was cold got enough white smoke out the tailpipe to whiteout everyone behind me. got lots of people keeping their distance but it stops once the car is warmed up. i'm still unsure of why this is...i was wondering if i could get the emissions checked by you at some point before long. i have a bad feeling that it will be time to put the car into retirement onto the family farm.:).  praying that the warm weather of summer will be therapeutic..
