Title: 2.0 Gti 8v engine rebuild gaskets..
Post by: Robracer on 20 March 2013, 22:15
Hi guy's, soon I'll be pulling out the 8v lump and gearbox in my 97' gti. Got a few jobs to do on it, so I thought whilst I replace the gearbox, I thought I'd give the engine a rebuild, because its leaking oil in all right places! So I've been looking on eBay for all the related gaskets, ie, head, sump, rocker etc. Besides the usual over priced dealer, are the eBay kits any good? Or do you know somewhere else I can buy a good gasket it? But not for silly money :)

Cheers in advance, Rob

If you Fwncy doing it twice, buy from eBay.

If you wanna get it done once and over with. Try tps. Good quality stuff and prices ain't too nasty aswell.

Euro car parts do a full head gasket set including all top end gaskets for about £50 then our 25% off

But they won't be genuine parts will they?, and the amount of stories I've heard about Ecp, I wouldn't use them tbh.

I wouldnt look at their sign. Their parts are so much of poor quality i cant explain how poor. Lol

ECP is absolutely fine. They supply some of their own stuff and decent branded stuff. I use them or my trade all the time. Pagid pads for example, LUK clutches etc.

However for some parts like gaskets and seals, ECP brand or decent brand, they never are as good as original OEM. Go to TPS for it.

I've just made a quick visit to my local vw dealer. Thought I'd see how their prices stack up to others..
Bearing in mind their for a 97' 8v 2.0 AGG block.

All plus 20% vat!

Rocker cover gasket: £19.57
Sump gasket :£26.41
Head gasket: £36.53

Or my local motor factor..
Head Gasket set: £63.49
Rocker cover gasket: £21.99
Head Gasket: £45.99
Sump Gasket: £26.99

So checked out GSF, their cheaper in some parts etc. But not sure of the brand quality. Then checked out ECP, roughly the same prices again. Also with varying brands. Then checked out TPS online, it said contact my local dealership?

So ideally id like dealer quality but the price isn't that appealing :(

Always had extremely shortened life times with pattern gaskets.

Ring your local TPS they'll quote over phone.

Cheers. I think I'll get the rocker and sump gaskets from gsf, and i'll get the head gasket from my local vw dealer. All I need now is some decent weather to get under the car

I'd do the opposite.

HG fine from GSF, it's the rocker one that always leaks. Sump gasket is just sealant too mate. Get Dirko stuff, expensive but the best!
