what is it with the mk4 gti 150bhp when my p reg 16v eats them for a laugh?
was thinking about buying one but after driving one what a pile of heavy crap?
-
Weight is obviously the issue here, same power trying to shift more mass equates to a slower car... until remapped.
-
the old mk3 has got something about it!
cant believe how 2 bob the mk4 feels, really thought it was a nice motor till i took one for spin.
rant over...

mk3 all the way!

MK4 just looks ugly. Mk5 GTi is awesome

Been saying this for years...all i hear is mk2..blah blah blah....

The 1.8T is pretty poor in standard form, but chuck £300 at it and you'll have a 200bhp/240lbft car which will destroy your 16v

it's like every new standard engine should be in a previous golf.. 1.8T in a mk3, ABF in a mk2 and a KR in a mk1 lol

I absolutely love the look of mk2s and I bet the handling is so much better but you can't beat a mk3 for price and the interior is better

Just progress on engines. ABF and 1.8T suited to all Golfs really. I want a PD130 in an older dub as a daily. Thinking a MK1.... :/
TBF I need my MK3 back or to go bother the MK4 section more since that's all I drive these days.

off the mark yes and round the streets, but bet my old beast would keep up on motorway

I'd say quite the opposite bud.
Reckon a 16v would be a decent match for a 1.8T round the backroads and bends, pure NA power. Motorway the 1.8T on boost, bye bye 16v.
Infact the 1.9 PD130 Passat auto would have a 16v on the motorway. :)

Few years back I used to work late shift and had few early morning races with a good friends Mk4 turbo, I could do him most times over the 7 miles up to the dual carriageway where boost and a long straight run always put him in front.

Honestly mate, you'd have no chance in a mk3 on the motorway. I went up against a mate's abf'd mk2 on a private airstrip and it was close until about 120 when I pulled away. Your mk3 is a bit more lardy than the mk2 was as well.

240bhp 1.8t in a (originally) abf mk3 .... wins all :D

I had a go in a mk2 16v at christmas and i liked it a lot, felt sharper on turn in than a mk3 and suprisingly quick away from the lights.
