Title: wet floor & carpets.. weld up drain plug holes?
Post by: whileoceanasleeps on 19 February 2013, 17:33
my drivers side carpets were wet so I did some investigation to find this:

no rust but one of the drain plugs had broken so wet was getting everywhere, the underlay was soaked. what should I do? is it ok to just weld some plate straight over where the plug was?

cheers

cover the area with some underseal both sides and pop another rubber bung in (halfords, homebase etc do a selection normally). Why spend lots on welding when they can be useful

As BB said I would get another grommet and seal it in.

why? that means I have to pay for 14 miles of petrol plus whatever they cost when I can weld for free at work where ill be anyway?

You 100% certain that that's where the water is coming from?

Don't tease your Mk3 with the welder unless it really needs it. There are easier ways to seal up a hole.

yep think welding is a bit ott.. yeah the wetness is definitely coming from the floor but it'll be also coming from the pollen filter because the plastic seal/cover there is broken.

made 5 50mm circles from 2mm steel and siliconed them in today so should have no more wet and no more frozen inside of the windscreen. made 5 more to do the passenger side while the center console is out too

Untreated steel? You may have to weld it up after all. As said previous, don't get the welder out unless you have to. Should have got a grommet from a breaker or someone could have sent you some for the price of a stamp.
