I posted not to long ago for advice on a squeaky noise that only came on when the turbo kicked in, I thought I had solved it as the pancake pipe bracket was caught under the drive shaft making a squeaking noise.....
However, I've since taken it for a drive on the motorway and the noise I could hear inside the cabin is still there! It seems to definitely be turbo related and comes on at around 7 psi, and stays on through the rev range until i come off the accelerator. I don't have a boost leak so am worried that It may be a more serious turbo issue :undecided:
Here's a video (not my video) but it is the exact same noise that starts at around 11 seconds

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like air to me like a vac pipe leaking mybe??

Ah right, I didn't think of the vac lines, just assumed it would be boost  I'll check the brake booster lines tomorrow as it sounds like it is coming from directly behind drivers side dash that why i originally thought charge pipe connection.
Wouldn't my brakes feel heavier if it was a brake booster though? could a faulty n75 cause this?

sounds like a leprachaun stuck under there :-)

I had a noise like what you have in my last 1.8t it was my boost gauge swaped it and noise went

Ah right, was it the gauge itself? I'll take it off, stick a bolt in the end of the line and see if it goes then... so many things to check in this cold weather!

yes mate my gauge was F***

haha in a strange way I hope its my gauge... it's alot easier to access and I can have the heaters on!

Sounds like a small boost leak to me, whistling indicating a small hole....
Is it just under boost, is it as you let off boost or at the end before the DV blows off

It is just under boost, comes on at 7 psi and stops when i let off boost..... do you think a hole in the intercooler itself would make a noise like that?
-
It isn't my boost gauge. I also revved whilst outside the car and it's definately coming from outside. There was also a very strong smell of petrol which is making me think maybe exhaust side of the turbo? Could a split in the exhaust manifold gasket make this kind of high pitched noise? I read elsewhere that the nuts can come loose too :undecided:

How old is the DV and what type is it? Colour spring etc

its a forge 007p DV, is only 18 months old... I got it when I had my remap and it has a yellow spring. Has never been a problem, this noise only started after all the heavy snow, I didn't start it for 2 weeks and since then it has been doing it. I did notice a little oily liquid (like a single droplet) where the DV connects to the Charge pipe but that has always been the case...
Vag com shows no related faults (i have a few electrical short to grounds) which makes me think it is exhaust side of the turbo? that is assuming a leak due to a cracked manifold gasket or loose nut would not show any faults on vagcom?
I need to get under it and have a proper look, but seeing as it's in a car park and it's always raining or snowing here I can't face it!

I'd check that oil leak near your DV, oil escaping from the inlet system is usually a good indicator of a leak. The smell of petrol can be a sign of an exhaust side leak, check the bolts that hold the turbo on to the manifold.

I've kept my eye on the DV for the past 10 months or so and everything is tight, the leak is more like a light brown film around the hose end and never seems to increase in amount.
Everytime I think I've found what it could be something else happens! Just done 80 mile motorway trip and the high pitched squeal sounds now like a dentist drill and the 'whoosh' sound when coming off boost is significantly louder?! :undecided: tearing my hair out abit!
I've come to pick my jacks up from my parents house so should be able to have a good look under there in the next week.... In just praying it isn't my turbo  I'm gonna put on my Bosch dv to see if the noise goes as a bit of an indicator!
-
Hate to say this mate but that dentist drill noise usually means knackered turbo! You need to have a proper look at it ASAP before it causes more damage to your engine. Just take your turbo intake pipe off and have a feel of your compressor wheel.

That's what I've been reading  though i'm gonna remain hopeful, I'm not taking my car out till I get time to check it over properly, gonna make some time Thursday to check the whole system from turbo to inlet manifold and all vac lines, so will report back!
Am I right in thinking it should have little/no movement perpendicular to shaft axis and no more than 0.5 mm parallel to the axis is acceptable?

My AUM makes a noise like that. I checked my turbo a few days ago and there was a bit of damage to im impeller wheel and quite a bit of play. I aslo replaced my intercooler and noticed loads of oil and metal filings in the boost pipes.
So now im looking at replacing the turbo

I've got a load of K03s parts if your interested in rebuilding it instead of replacing.

Uh Oh.... I had a load of oil in my intercooler too, no metal filings though :undecided: This isn't looking good....
