A discussion I had with a friend over lunch:
Which is more important to you
Using the below, form an answer. Do not consider things like restructuring bills or anything complicated, it is a simple case of money in - money out.
1) You are happy in your current job.
2) The cost of living is rising constantly but unfortunately your wage packet isn't.
3) There are options of other jobs of course, some in the local vicinity and some which would require (for arguements sake) a 1.5hour commute.
Which would be more important to you? The happiness you currently have in your job, or the draw of a bigger wage packet?
I couldn't come up with a convincing answer for either, but think happiness is more important for a job role, however money does play an enormous part of it and I think would begin to eat away at your job satisfaction.....
discuss....

To me its about finding a balance. I currently commute approx 60 miles / 2 hours a day for a job that is earning me around 4K LESS than my previous job which included a 10 mile round trip.
Its become even more important with the birth of my daughter to find a job closer to home with at least or better than my current wage packet.
I don't want to earn mega bucks but I want to earn enough to not have to think about buying something or taking my family on holiday or out for a meal etc etc. In other words, my previous pay packet would be nice!
The fact I earn considerably less and travel over 5 times the distance is seriously grating on me at the moment hence the need for change

If your going to scrape a living make it a living worth scraping

surely happiness. if you're happy already then don't change anything, regardless of money. the only reason people strive for more money is because they think it is correlated with happiness. there was research recently into happiness and it studied a paraplegic and a lottery winner. it found that one year after each person's life change, the paraplegic was actually happier. so in my answer I'd say happiness. I would like some new car parts tho :p
-
Spending more than you earn always brings unhappiness.

Happiness all the way in my opinion. Its good to have the choice as most people don't and will remain trapped in jobs that make them miserable and stressed and ultimately, unhealthy. I'm self employed the now and struggling a bit to be fair, but still smiling, and i'm looking for a proper job but one that I am happy with. In general money has never brought me happiness, its stresses me out even having it so I just spend it on stuff I know i could resell in the future for similar money. I also have no debt whatsoever, not a lick of it and will never have.

I earn about £4K less now but I finish at 3.30 every day and 12 on a Friday so I guess its happiness for me!!

I think that is a pointless study though. You are taking two extremes and applying a single monitoring point.
I.E. someone has just happened to win the lottery - people will come begging, which will lead to resentment and unhappiness. Where as I think my question was more pertinent to the average person who has to work for their money.

To me it's all about compromise, I've got mates who I graduated uni with that are in higher paid jobs than me, but they work 60 hour weeks and hate what they do.
On the other hand, I work a 40 hour week doing something that I enjoy and earn ~£10k a year less. I have more spare time than they do and still earn enough to enjoy that time. To me it's a no brainer, I work to live, not live to work.
-
definitely happiness
i am lucky in that my job is home based so i just jump in the van and im at work
the money to start with was only 14k but i knew that would rise with certification and overtime. i really enjoy the work and that makes for stress free working days. sometimes i am under pressure but its not often.
i used to commute as a contractor 2 hrs each way in previous work earning 900 a week take home, having that money was great but the travel really was stressful.
if possible go for a job as close to home as you can, there's little point in earning good money if you dont get quality time with your family
as dom says work to live

Happiness.
Whenever I have been in a job I don't like I have been the most miserable b'stard known to man, I tended to get really depressed too.
My mantra is that if you're in a job where you can't face going to work in the morning, you're in the wrong job and need to find a new one.
-
well i think there's a general consensus here
-
Happiness is the way to go, IF you can find it. I earn a decent salary where I am now and am lucky to still get a pay rise once a year, I'm happy enough and there are some changes coming at work which could mean more stress & responsibility - but I'm looking forward to the changes! I could earn a lot more else where but that would mean being unhappy & a lot more commuting - not what I want to be doing.
My mantra is that if you're in a job where you can't face going to work in the morning, you're in the wrong job and need to find a new one.
Precisely what I did ! My work at TNT / CEVA was killing me, it was time to find a new job or quit. I got a new job, luckily!
-
I've always said " I would rather be slapped in the face by a pretty women than an ugly one!"
-
I earn good money, cycle to work, and enjoy it (Sometimes!). I do hate the company I work for though , but I can't afford to move jobs, so its a bit of a compromise tbh. I amounted a fair bit of debt on a loan and credit card for my wedding, which I'm paying through the nose for now each month. That won't be paid off for a good 3/4 years yet, so although I have everything mentioned in the first sentence, I still have no money for holidays abroad or anything too extravagant tbh. (Although I WILL be getting a Corrado VR6 in a couple of months!

I've been told that my job (along with the entire department) in moving to Ireland at the end of June. They're offering a retention bonus if we stay until then, and have said they plan to place all of us in new jobs within the company. However they have also issued us with a letter stating that our jobs could be at risk of redundancy, to cover their backs. Problem is we won't really get a choice as to what our new job is. We either take it, or we have to leave and they have no obligation to pay redundancy because they offered is an alternative job role.
So at the moment I'm trying to decide what is best. As the other half works part time she earns practically nothing. I'm not on a great salary either, but earn more than most in my profession at the level I'm at (bottom rung of the ladder). I'm currently leaning toward staying, taking the bonus and risking the new job, knowing I could absolutley hate it. If it's really bad I'll just have to look externally.

Fooking hell slick, you got a spay cam in my cleaning bay  cos this very discussion was had this avo.
my job would be fine if it wasnt for the people I work for
The wages are VERY good for what I actually - and other similar jobs in the area.
My commute is a complete ar$e - 50 miles - 2 hours a day total.
I am not happy and have found myself at an all time low recently, but I put this down to a combination of the commute and working for clusterfcuks at times.
So hopefully moving closer to work will at least help out a bit and I might have a life again

i hear ya mate, i think that an enjoyable job is all do to with who you work with. my ambition is to make a living from playing in my band eventually, which will be an awesome 'job' (when we break..). however I'd rather do a crappy job with someone that I connected with than sat in a recording studio writing songs for 10 hours a day with complete arssholes!
-
Agreeable Slick, you obviously have a tough decision to make. I would go for happiness
-
I commute 100 miles a day which takes between 2-3 hours a day. It's even worse that I work for a national company with stores ALOT closer. A new place has opened that is about 5 miles from where I live.
I'm looking elsewhere at the moment but can't afford a big pay cut.
-
No decision to make, it was actually a convo with a friend. He lives in the big smoke, highly paid, but has to commute across london. Makes him grumpy and costs muchos money.
I live in the north, can get to work in 20mins, either walk, cycle, tram etc. Get paid less, but am happy.
Interested to see peoples responses to the question though.
-
In response to the questions:
1) Happy enough to not consider looking else where.
2) My salary is rising, but with a larger home now and another kiddie, I have yet to see if my raise is enough as all three have happened in the last 2 months.
3) f**k more commuting, up to 50mins to do 18 miles is plain ridiculous in the morning, I can do the return trip home in 20mins or under most days. Family time is more important.
-
I'm not happy where I am, and having spent £5000 on courses to change my career doing what I'm doing now, but on a larger scale and offshore because of the money I will earn, but that had been making me very depressed the last few months!!
But it's February and all of the offshore companies are hiring, but I can't start till I'm back off of holiday, just scared to apply ATM!
Out of all my friends at 22' I'm the highest paid and have our house etc no debt, nice holidays etc! There all at home with mummy!
But the money I'm on isn't helping when I'm doing 100-300 miles each day when I'm a plumber! Not a driver!!
Life..........

london always has a weighting which puts salarys up... so take that into account
key is to find something that you enjoy.. preferably in an industry that you have an interest in

Happiness
Been in the same job for 14 years in July and whilst I have considered looking for a new job I am happy with the job and wage at the moment.
Also living 1.1 miles from work is a bonus.
-
If you were really happy in your job you wouldnt be looking.
However if you knew you could get paid more by going elsewhere would that not niggle at you?
Realise you are under selling yourself?
So would you still be happy?
I have moved for money and made a mistake. I have also moved for money and found the job I loved most in my life and was my longest employment (4.5 years)
So have seen both sides.
-
Ill be happy once I get out on site and working (bored of inductions and training now..)
Ill be even more happier once I get paid!
Plus the sun is nice although it was 42c the other day and that wasn't nice... :lipsrsealed:
-
I think happiness is very important but earning crap money wouldn't bring my happiness either so i like a happy medium.
I don't dread going to work but i happy when the weekend arrives
-
Happiness definitely. You spend too much of your life at work to not enjoy it if you possibly can.
I can't see anything that would make me leave my current position (internal promotion aside) other than winning the lottery and not needing to work at all!
-
Happiness over money.
I have a mate who locums. He makes in a week what I make in a month. But he doesn't get to spend time with his family and works away at weekends.
I work essentially four days a week, have less stress, feel happier, fitter, and my insomnia has settled.
-
It's awful waking up and dreading going to work, no matter what sort of money you are on. I've been in sh!tty jobs paying good money and moved for less pay to be happier, thankfully I have the best of both worlds where I am now, the money isn't the very best out there but it's not far off, and I can honestly say I have never woke up and thought 'I really don't want to go in today' (hangovers aside of course)
Happiness is a must for me and the wife, she was doing architecture for a building company, she had 2 years left to do to become fully qualified and a starting salary of around 40k, not too shabby!!
However, her 2 bosses were..... How can I put this nicely?? CIINTS!!!
They made her life hell, to the point she was coming home crying, couldn't sleep and hated the thought of going into work, she had to physically stop me from going to her work and knacking the 2 pricks on more than one occasion!!!
It got to the point she couldn't do it anymore, left and became a childminder, he'll of a career change lol
The money is nothing like what she could have been earning now and our house has a load of kids running around it all the time but it pays the bills, she is her own boss and she's never been happier.
Happiness all the way I'd say but decent money for a job you don't mind is probably the way to do it.
-
I think if you can make work part of life, it's better to be happier. Not living to work but just kinda getting your routine going.
I love working for myself though. Hate window cleaning but it's regular, love working on cars and it's picking up faster and faster!
-
I don't mind my job but that's not to say I love it. I still don't know what I truly want to do in life and I'm fast approaching 34!
Having my kids and losing my job five years ago have definitely changed the outlook I have on material things. I spend what I can afford and don't touch my credit cards any more. The job I do now pays 21k a year which pays the mortgage, bills and for bits for the kids and on the Golf so I can't really complain.
More money would be good but I've learnt to live with what I've got as over here there's not much opportunity to swap jobs about as and when unless I want to add a boat journey and £40 a day into the mix
