Title: Picked up my new MKIV V5 - Seriously Annoyed
Post by: JayHoney on 02 February 2013, 22:24
Just got back from picking up the V5 and I have to say, I am SERIOUSLY annoyed. Seller lied through his teeth about the car.

When I arrived, it sounded a little lumpy, something I put down to the V5 engine combined with a stupid exhaust/ "Fair enough" I thought. Seemed to drive ok other than 1st and 2nd gear are difficult to select. They seemed just too far to the left. You can select them but it isn't easy

So, did the deal after knocking a bit off for the before unmentioned gear issue and set off home. By the time I hit the M1, BOTH front bearings were making a serious din.....Obviously the seller packed them with grease

Gets worse, the lumpy engine got a LOT worse, almost sounding and feeling like one cylinder wasn't firing properly. Nursed her back and decided to try planting the loud button, only to find her a bit lumpy, not giving as much as it felt like she had to give but the 5th cylinder DID come back online.

Switched on the lights and surprise surprise, the passenger side was out but rather strangely, the left indicator only works when the lights are either off or on sidelights

So, I HAVE got back, seriously annoyed but it looks like the Golf has to take over from the MR2 as the main project for a while to get it as good as it should be. Any pointers of things to look at tomorrow would be VERY appreciated.

On the positive, the brakes are good, nicely balanced and stopping as they should, the interior, although dirty, is actually in good nick other than a busted cup holder (stuck out) and the bodywork is straight and tidy other than a slight knock on the rear bumper that has cracked the paint....

So, you'll be seeing a lot of me in here. Time to break out the socket set, multimeter and BIG hammer

Get vagcom on it. Get it scanned for any fault codes.

As long as there aren't any ridiculous codes I'd then give it a service, get around underneath the car check all the bushes etc see what is what.

Keep us posted.

VAGCOM? I am assuming that is the diagnostic tool for the VW range?

Anything special needed to run this? Leads etc?

Type Vagcom into eBay and you can get a basic cable that you can use to simply scan for codes. A free version of vagcom is available off the Rosstech website. The diagnostic port is just under the radio cage and above the ashtray with the plastic cover simply pulling off.

It will at least point you in the right direction.

Why buy a v5??? Also did you not test it before you bought it?

Why buy a v5??? Also did you not test it before you bought it?

Did test it prior to parting with the cash and it seemed fine - trouble is I think I have just dealt with Arthur Daley car sales. Do just enough to the hide the problems on a test knowing full well that these issues are present and the fix is purely temporary.....

Bought the V5 as it seemed like a good car - how wrong was I? Read up on several reviews and it seemed to tick all the right boxes for me. Some nice low down torque, reasonable power for a daily hack and a good boot.

So, I need to sit back, work out the issues, use the MR2 as a daily for a while and sort this one out. Nothing can't be fixed, it is just how long it takes and how many hammers it takes in the meantime.

So, I will be picking brains, dealing with these faults one at a time. No doubt it can be a good car, the basics are sound, just need to overhaul the mechanics. Not something I am adverse to, that's for sure, just REALLY annoyed that there is a long list already and I have had it less than 24hrs

Is this a private sale or did you buy from a garage?

If its the latter throw it back at them and tell them to fix the problems

If it was from a dealer and speaking from experience getting money back is almost impossible, I had a 4 week legal fight with the dealer over the Rover, not a chance, even after rejecting it in writing under the sale of goods act.

That was your problem right there once anyone sells a rover, NO-ONE wants them back  :lipsrsealed:

Not just the Rover :lipsrsealed: have tried in the past with other cars, it seems that once a dealer has taken you money your on your own in basic terms, they will of course offer to fix / bodge it.

I went with a main dealer for the last one, figured with my track record it was safer

Private sale I'm afraid - I think my problem was I tested the car cold, didn't give her time to heat up properly purely because I wanted to get home

OK, so I have made a serious mistake, I have the car, I have no come back so have made my own bed here. Facts are, the shell is good, the interior is good the mechanics are dubious to put it mildly. My attitude is that I have to make the best of a bad bunch here.

I feel a project thread coming on but I have to warn you that I may be asking some dumb questions. I know my way round a socket set, it's the finer details of the Golf that I am unsure about. I have been playing with rice for the past 8 years after all.....

So, in a nutshell, the car is here, it has faults, I have to fix them. End of. Just REALLY annoyed as if I wanted a new project, I would have bought a Karmann Ghia

has to be a bit better than the v5 just doing the timing chain on that could buy a 1.8t that has a car with it

And you'll spend a fair chunk of money on the 1.8T chasing boost leaks, replacing the vacuum system, weak actuators, coilpacks etc etc

You'd think   :lipsrsealed:

But a lot of people buy an engine from a scrappy or Ebay and it arrives on a pallet so you have no idea of how its running   It gets put into the car and then you discover the multitude of problems which need fixing before you even think about chucking more power at it
