Hi all,
I currently have a 97/P reg MK3 GTi that I've had for just over 7 years now.
I think it's time for something newer, so I have been considering a MK4 GTi, probably a 1.8 Turbo rather than a 2.0.
How does the MK4 compare to the MK3? I left the VW stealership I worked for a few months after the MK4 was released - I don't think I drove a GTi, but can remember not being overwhelmed by the "normal" versions of the MK4 at the time.

You're asking the Mk4 section if we think you should scrap the mk3 and get a mk4...
-
Simple answer yes
-
 different planet LOVE MK4 not keen on MK3. Get a turbo or GT TDI 130 or 150 happy days
-
If you're a good home mechanic then go for it. If not you best have deep pockets to pay garage bills...
-
Get a mk5 Gti.

The 1.8t. Is sluggish standard you would need to remap it to get real power out. Good cars just lot niggly things go on them. 1.8t is very tunable if thats your after.. Plus there cheap now
-
NO get a mk3 16v gti and laugh at all the mk4 gti 1.8t's (in standard form) trying to keep up with there turbo lag
-
A MK4 all day long. For looks a MK4 over a MK3, for power a mapped MK4 over a MK3. Did I mention a MK4 just because it's a MK4?

Agree with this. Had my 1.8t for nearly 2 years now and nothing major has gone wrong with it but the little things really have added up, ABS problems, front bushes now 3 of my door locks have broke.
Think I have spent near on £800 in 2 years to fix the little problems.
Don't get me wrong, I love driving it but it has been the most expensive car to run and maintain I have ever owned

This!!! The mk3 is known for Being a boat. But the mk4 is bigger and heaver! And did someone just say the mk4 looks better?
I'd say get a mk3 16v, and then when your bord of it, do a 1.8t conversion onit (and remap it of corse)

Oh dear, what have I started...
I'm more confused than ever now - I would prefer to stay with a VW, and a GTi, but I also want a car that I can just hop into and drive. I don't want to be fixing niggles and stuff all the time. Sadly my most recent experience with a MK4 was with one that had x2 electric windows inop, central locking borked on one door and other gremlins - I wasn't sure if this was a Friday afternoon car, or more like the "norm".
I would go for a MK5, but I just don't have that sort of money.
Mutter, mumble.

Mk3 it is then

To be honest, for good or bad, I don't really want another MK3. I've had this one for 7 years, it's time for something new...

mk5 it is then.

Think outside the box and go for a Leon or Octavia :afro:

Which also get my vote, unlike the mk4.

Missed this thread  I dont think theres a Golf Ive owned that I havent had to spend money on at some point think its part of owning a Golf  Loved all my mk3s still do like them but dont think I could go back to a mk3 after owning my mk4 unless it was a second car.

who ever says a mk3 looks better than a mk4 need be shot, i had a mk3 vr6 previous and it was a dog.
-
I've had both, and the mk3 interior is dreary!! Even if you have the best seats in it, the colour concept leather recaros (which I did), the dash and trim are just too dated!! :undecided:

Had a 1.8t. Wanted one for ages. I went from a MK3 8v anni. In short, I did not like the 4. It had loads of annoying electrical issues, handled lie a barge and cost too much to make it my own. I'm now buying back the Mk3 I sold to get the 4. So, no.
