just a bit of fun.. what do you think in your opinion was the best golf ever made?
based on everything.. looks, handling, performance etc?
i've only ever driven two golfs, a mk3 8v and mk3 16v so i can only say I'm gonna start with mk3 16v 3dr! (although i'm a future mk1 boy.. give it time :)

Of the Golf's I've driven and straight out of the box, an Edition 30, looks wise the mk5 is the best looking GTi they have ever made imo, and the Ed 30 is a lot of fun to drive. I haven't driven a mk5 R32 or anything above a mk5 so cant comment on the R
-
Only had mk4's

I have to agree! you're too kind
Seriously though, I'd probably say the mk2 for being available in awd and capable of carrying many of the good parts from a mk3, and the mk3 for supplying the parts.

Mk1/2s are to be looked at
Pic on mine from a few years ago, courtesy of Mr Horn, still my favorite, but don't tell James!

It's hard to what is the actual best one from the factory but the mk2 G60 16v synchro Limited was very desirable in stock form.

reminds me of my second ever Golf (Jade green small bumper mk2 16v) about 13yrs ago. Good times.

Mk1 or Mk2 GTI would be my choice and will always be considered classics.
Saw the advert for the mk7 earlier on TV and it looks just like the mk5 and 6 so no real progress.
-
You were all wrong up to thai-wronghorse, who is still wrong because he can't spell Syncro.
Swiftly followed up by the Golf2 GTI G60 Syncro because it's lighter and far more stealthy than the Rallye.
Golf2s are made to be spanked, hard.
-
Pedantic cock-socket.
But yes they are pretty f**king awesome and scream out for a damn good thrashing.

Wrong!
Me and Miss Daisy roll slow and low...

Sadly though it's the best Golf that was only available in tiny numbers, didn't they only make something crazy like 25 3 doors versions?

Not sure about 3dr models released but i know there were only 71 in total.

Not the BEST Golf ever but I certainly wouldn't say no

Now that's flippin quick !
-
MK1 GTi- Currently after one
MK2 GTi
MK5 Gti the futor classic. A long way to go but it's next in line.
The mk3, mk4, mk6 and mk7 have no soul (in my opinion)

Not the BEST Golf ever but I certainly wouldn't say no

don't like the looks of that one but that is faaaast
-
Mk2's are my fav I think.
Only ever owned a mk4 derv so my opinion proabably isn't valid!
-
My favourite is the Small bumper 3 door big window Mk2 16v in Atlas Grey, awesome car had two of em so far.
One of mine made 148bhp std, nearly 10 bhp up on book figure.....
Second is the Mk1 GTI, the original.
Third is the Mk5 GTI, really lifted the model from the horrid wallowy Mk4
-
Mk1 Campaign in Mars Red, this is where it all started for me after my brother brought his first one!

I don't think looks were high on the agenda when they built it.

Easy, the Mk1 GTI, original and still the best, only ever driven one mk2, love my mk3's but never going to be the best. but as people have said before a standard mk5 gti is a very special car out of the box and has everything. Smart move by VW to go back to the original for inspriation.
-
^^^ well said.

Yes, mk5 gets my vote.
-
Any Mk2.... :D :D :D :D
Driven many "So called Super Cars" but I always come Back to my MK2's
Best on all round handing and overall performance... Iconic Car
IMO...

Kells MK3 is the best, Coz there's not another one like it in the world

My favorite from what Ive owned and driven is the mk1 Gti such a great little car to drive I also had a 4 door GLS I think it was a 1.3 even that was loads of fun.The mk2 would be my number 2 I have owned a few 16v oak greens and my dad had a Rallye again great fun..
-
Mk1, Mk2 then Mk3. Mk4's are ugly. Never driven a Mk5 or 6.
-
HPA's 720ps, 3.6 V6 twin turbo'd Golf R.
Drive in with a stock R and drive out with the full conversion within a week.
-
MK2 GTI 16v ( if ignoreing 4wd variants )
MK5's are a good drive out the box but the mk2 has something they don't even tho the mk5 is a damb sight faster
-
Mk6 GTD is pretty good too
-
my mk2. owned it twice now. i hate the wheels, its got scratches all over it, the list of jobs i have to do on it is endless, i paid way over the odds (the first time and then again the second time) for it and i f**king love it.
and on a serious note mr blues mk2 is the best imo.
-
Mk2 gti. Wanted one when I was a kid and and when I finally drove one it felt exactly how I imagined it would. Shame I ve only ever managed to afford sheds.
-
I love my mk6 but WILL have a mk2 16v big bumper one day!
-
Best Golf ever?
Mine of course!

This is a thread asking for invidual opinions, is it not?
So in my opinion my Golf is the best!
As you Shaun would say yours is the best etc. etc.
Pointless thread in my opinion!

I think due to the way the first post was worded it was aimed at model rather than individual car. What was the best Golf VW ever made? Therefore not pointless and my response was as below.
Seriously though, I'd probably say the mk2 for being available in awd and capable of carrying many of the good parts from a mk3, and the mk3 for supplying the parts.
The opposite question, the worst vw golf ever made COULD have answers like the MK4 2.0 GTI or the MK3 8v GTI. Neither of which IMO were really worthy of the GTI badge.
-
I may have to agree on that.
-

theirs worse golfs than the mk4 GTI 2.0 and the mk3 GTI 8v
Theirs little in it performance wise over the mk3 8v and mk2 8v.. IMO neither of them deserved the GTI badge, but that don't make them a bad car
Just saying

On paper not a lot. In real life, lots of difference.

Iv owned both
Both are a disappointment
-
Iv owned both
Both are a disappointment
So have I and I know for a fact that a mk3 gti is hopeless compared to mk2.
I don't see how a mk2 gti isn't worthy of a gti badge.
-
What's the criteria for being best?
Performance, pricing, comfort, and toys, availability of parts, panels, styling, cost of performance parts
If you only care about the first two on the list then the mk2 8v or 16v
But if you want a daily with toys, performance, availability of parts, panels styling then the ED30
And yes Len pointless thread as we all want different things. I'd have a mk2 again if I could find a cheap enough one that had what my car has in it and was reliable rust free and panel perfect. But that's why I haven't.
-
was trying to see what golf was generally thought of as the best golf as in factory model rather than individual car. overall best but mainly handling, performance, build quality etc. i'd imagine a lot of people's own cars are their favourite because the point of modding is make them the way they want them  was interested to get a more objective perspective... it seems the majority swing towards a mk2 which is what i thought anyway
everyone rips mk3 8vs but i loved mine, i'd only driven small cars until i got that so it was a good step up to driving a quicker car. still has the same build quality, still a vw, still a good car just could have done with more power to fit with the preceding gtis.
-

So have I and I know for a fact that a mk3 gti is hopeless compared to mk2.
I don't see how a mk2 gti isn't worthy of a gti badge.
The only beneficial side to the mk2 8v over a mk3 8v is slightly better handling
Aero dynamics on a mk2 are sub standard, they are actually very good on a mk3
Theirs is much better standard equipment on a mk3, it's safer and does not feel like your driving round in a Tin can
Iv also owned a 16v mk2 ( which was only 4'years old at the time) so I know them quite well, I love them but the 8v is as non worthy of the Gti badge as the mk3 8v was
We used to say this back in the 90's when we owned them and I still stand by this now
The Gti should have just been 16v IMO
-
mk2 gti is my favorite looking
mk4 r32 favorite sounding!
-
I meant pointless as everyone will slate the mk3, like the mk2, say that the mk4 2.0 was the worst, the mk5 is tuneable and now affordable too.
And then the whole 8v 16v thing raises its head. There was no real world difference IMO and I've had a valver and driven an 8v. MK3 in standard 8v form is shockingly slow but its just middle aged spread.
-
My 87 16v used to leave my mates 8v for dust. Before 60mph it was close, after it was no competition.
Also all 4 of the 8v mk2 s I've owned and 3 others my mates have owned all lost puff about 85 90 and managed 110 whereas a 16v still pulled and could of gone much faster.
A mk3 gti can't beat a corolla 1600 so how people say there is no difference is balls. Someone go race a mk3 against a mk2 and see what happens.
just my experience of gti ownership not doing the whole "8v vs 16v" argument cos I don't care really. I ve had both.

That was why I said 8v vs 16v will come up. And real world...to 60 is about the most your gonna do or admit to...so without tracking them not much in it. Valvers will pull and pull once in that top end...and mk2s feel like go karts...point n squirt
-
Trust me they don't

That was my Mk2 16v GTI, G reg small bumper, 3dr atlas grey. Loved it. Was a great car.
The G60 16v Limited or G60 Syncro would probably get my vote for ultimate Golf, it's just a shame there's so few of them and they are so expensive.
I would probably say the Mk2 16v GTI is the best overall non-limited edition Golf.
The Golfs lost their way with the Mk4, but the Mk5 looks good, has performance to match and has revived the GTI brand.
