Hi guys
I love my 3-year old mkvi golf gti (DSG) and have not messed with it since I bought it. The only thing that bugs me is the sound it generates. It does sound aggressive when I overtake or when I downshift but other than that it sounds a bit, well, subtle. I would really love its sound to match its punch. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want an evolution- or impreza-like sound but I would like to make it sound a bit more aggressive even at low revs. Any ideas/recommendations? Anything I could do by myself without messing with engine/electronics?

Milltek chimney. Job done.

As said, Milltek without a doubt

thanks. by milltek you mean an exhaust system I presume. will I need an upgrade of any sort, e.g. engine tuning etc.? thanks again
-
Yeah full exhaust system. To get the most out of it yes you should get your car set up for the new exhaust on a rolling road. Just putting the exhaust on without tuning could well reduce the performance.
-
BCS are getting great reports.
-
My Blueflame CAT back exhaust and intake made very little difference to how the car sounded, but the remap and downpipe transformed that giving it a really purposeful sound without droning or sounding like a Corsa with a fartcan.
Be very surprised if the Milltek cat back alone will achieve what you're after.

Milltek non-res catback.

There's the mark of a good salesman!

BCS are getting great reports.
I have heard this as well, mostly on the MK5. Saw a nice system with satin black exhaust tips from BCS.
-
any views on the carbonio intake by APR? Anyone who has used this???
-
Exhaust first surely? At least other people will see that.

i think a non res catback will get you started and improve the tip appeal of the car

I like the existing exhaust of the gti as is  I was thinking more of a sound generator type of mod in the engine compartment...

Get an ED35 and you get one with it. On a serious note if you are going to spend money on the car making it sound better you might as well get the benefit an exhaust will give you in a more sporty sound improved look and maybe a few horses too.

Milltek full turbo back exhaust system  love it
could you be a bit more specific? what does this mean for the car in terms of equipment/money?
-
means you need a stage 2 remap around £400 and the system is around a £1100 for a decat or around £1400 with sport cat

stage 2 remap? that sounds like I should already have stage 1 remap, right? and when you say remap, you mean??? I once tried stage 1 revo but didn't really like it and removed it. but that alone was about 600 pounds. how is it that stage 2 remap is 400? I assume this is millitek remap, and it's different to the revo thing, meaning different costs. Could you please, please give me a total approximation from no stage to the stage 2 condition you describe??? Also, does this come with money back guarantee in case I don't like it?? Apologies for the long/multiple questions but would really love to do this and need to know as much as possible before doing it

Endy, could you please take a look here and tell me if what you suggest is on the list??? cheers mate

To try to answer your questions simply,
1. A remap is a reprogamming of the engines software to increase performance. Big name tuners are the likes of Revo, APR, Superchips etc
2. A stage 1 remap is a basic programme designed to increase the performance of an otherwise standard engine.
3. A stage 2 remap is similar to stage 1, but tailored to take into account other modifications such as an exhaust an intake.
4. Milltek make exhausts. The do not do remaps.
5. Some tuners offer free trials of their stage one software, but other than that there is no money back guarantee if you don't like it.
I hope this helps.

normally Stage 2 is only an additional £50 over the Stage 1 costs

excellent, so many thanks. with regards to your no.4, on their website, Millitek advertise the race exhaust system and an ECU remap that takes the gti to 282bhp. So is that remap done by someone except millitek?
thanks again, you've been very useful and comprehensive
-
I would take a remap first...that will most certainly deliver more grunt....And it does not change anything to the car itself.
The grunt comes with loads more performance so win win....
The standard tips are way too small...if you get the 90 mm Fox (or Milltek) tips on the MKVI or 80 mm on the MKV you stay OEM look but a better overall GTI look.....and believe it or not those small tips DO change the sound (a bit ) for the better as well.
-
Just like everyone else here has suggested you need a remap for the full turbo back exhaust system. There are many companies that do remaps APR, REVO and Giac are just some names to go by.
I have the full race system.
You have mentioned you have once beed revo stage 1 but didn't like it and removed it...So judging by that your not looking for any performance gains? If so I would just recommend you getting a custom exhaust and just tell them how loud you want it. This way you be saving money because you don't need the remaps ect.
-
Just fit a full exhaust system, you dont need to remap at all unless you run a high flow cat (100 cel).
This will give you the sound you want.

I didn't like revo stage 1 because after trying it for a while, I didn't think it made that much of a difference to the car to justify paying 700 euro for it. I'd love the extra horsepower within reason cost-wise but mostly I'd like the car to sound more aggressive. now if the difference between extra sound and extra sound + bhp is not that great, i'll consider having both, if not then you're right, i'll just go with the sound.
I was wondering, is it possible to have the extra sound without messing with the factory exhaust (i.e. tail pipes)? I really love their looks and would want to keep them on the car.

I sort of know what you mean. I had the Revo free trial on my Leon Cupra at GTI International back in about 2003. Despite it giving it the legs of an 2000 Impreza on the A14, and there been a noticeable drop in power when the 5 hours trial ran out, it didn't "feel" £500 faster. (or whatever it was back then)
About a year later I bought a cat back Milltek for it. I felt that was money better spent. Not only did it look better as it filled the cutout in the bumper better, it had a nice subtle burble to it, that only those that know would notice.
-
Why not just get a non resonated cat back or remove the resonator from the standard exhaust.
A custom exhaust shop wouldn't charge much to cut the old one Ou and weld in a pipe or you could buy a decent cat back for about £450 which sound alot nicer.
If you don't want extra performance no point going for downpipe and remap. I it's just noise and looks you want get a cat back system
-
Mji performance want £300 ish for one of theirs fitted, that s with custom exhaust note and a selection of tips.

I hear you. removing the resonator from the standard exhaust may do the trick and sounds cheaper... I'll open up a new post asking about this then ...
