Title: H&R or Eibach Sportline springs and exhaust or 19"s?
Post by: Ginge 35Edition on 09 December 2012, 11:28
Any opinions guys? My budget will only really stretch to springs. I'm in two minds which direction to go, lower on std wheels and do the MIJ rear section exhaust or do 19" wheels. But all of the pics I've seen it looks like I'd still need to drop it a bit on 19"s?

I've seen a lot of lowered cars and H&R always seem to get the front to rear balance in both spring rate and stance just about spot on. Eibach are hit and miss and some of the lowering is decidedly wrong!

H&R ....simples.

Thanks for the pics, that's helped me make my mind up. Will I notice much of a ride difference?

And virtually the same pic of my car on Eibach Sportline springs...

I also to and fro'd between H&R and Eibach and I do sometimes feel the Eibachs have left my car looking ever so slightly nose heavy looking, but really being picky as its very subtle. Thing I will end up on coilovers ultimately so am happy for now.

Definitely wouldn't fit bigger wheels on without lowering as that never ends well.

Look forward to seeing what you do

Why not?
Decent lowerd springs and wheels with the proper offset, and lowering on bigger wheels works a treat.

No rubbing or scuffing, no arch mods required, and arches filled nicely.

You have misunderstood my point, I am saying don't fit bigger wheels and leave the suspension oem as it looks rubbish

My alologies...I got the wrong end of the stick.

I agree...standard height and uber small profile tyres on bigger wheels = awful.

sod the exhaust (for now anyway) and get the both the eibachs and some decent shocks to go with them (bilstein and springs are about £500-£600, i love mine)

or you can get h&r cup kit for about £400 and an eibach branded kit or a KW sport kit (both the same shocks and pretty much the same springs) for about £400 too

the difference aftermarket shocks made to the car was very good IMO and if your doing the springs its worth doing the shocks at the same time i reckon

some picture whoring for good measure on eibach sport lines/bilstein B8's

no £400ish is about the price for the kit (springs and uprated shocks)

fitting is fairly straight forward. i did mine in about 3 hours on the driveway. the rear is a doddle. front a bit more involved as hub must be pulled.

a garage would prob want 3 hours labour i reckon

i got a price for VWR springs (no shocks) at pulman VW and fitted they wanted about £400

Don't think I dare tackle this one myself, as I'm not great on the tools! Good point about VWR springs though so I've emailed by supplying dealer to see how much they could do this for. Will keep you posted.

I did the Eibach v H&R thing for my ROC and went with Eibach and it looked just right, not silly low.

It didn't affect the ACC but ride was harder never the less, moving onto the ED35 which in mines is also fitted with ACC and the first thing i noticed was just how much harder the Eibach lowering on the ROC did compared to stock ED35 set up.

The ROC needed it due to silly fresh air height under the arch on 18's.

Having been there I'm in no rush as my personal opinion is the ED35 is right without tweaking both in ride and look.......

for me aftermarket rims on stock ride height has never really done it for me but that's just me, similarly if your engine is never going to be mapped I wouldn't bother sticking any other hardware on it but would invest in the suspension department

springs wise i always thought the H&Rs were then were on mk5s sat too low at the back, everyone one i've seen on eibachs looked spot on, i had a set put on my rocco to sell it and they were great in terms of ride but didn't transform handling, for me the VWR route doesn't give value for money these days and only a few dealers offer their product with a warranty but you pay a hefty premium for the privilege

for me i'd go down the Bilstein B12 kit route as you will notice the difference and forget the rest, you'll have a greater looking stock car which is more fun to drive

i know out of our Pirelli and the Ed35 which is the better handling as a result of B16 Pss10

I've got VWR springs w/ std shocks and they're fine. I got the springs on the cheap so was a no brainer really

Dealer has just quoted 4 hrs @ £60 per hour, that sounds expensive to me?
Title: Re: H&R or Eibach Sportline springs and exhaust or 19"s?
Post by: mkviken on 10 December 2012, 18:23
thats about right. most main dealers are about £50+vat/hour labour

i would have expected them to quote at least 3 hours too so theyre on par with what i got quoted.

My car cost a shade over £300 to supply the Eibachs, fit them and do a 4 wheel laser alignment on one of those fancy machines with the mirror on each wheel, thought that was very reasonable.

If your giving him a call then ask whether he would do a discount for two as I would be interested in price for this.  Could always arrange to go up for a day and get them done if you would be interested.

Is this a good price?  I was thinking of the H&R - what do you think?

VWR Spring set fitted : £427.00
H&R Spring set fitted : £398.56

I hope thats with an alignment, personally I would say that either option is 20-25% too expensive from my experience.

i think thats about the right price.

they will need a good 3 hours to fit so thats easily £150 or more for labour

Yeah it's about £50 cheaper than my dealer for VWR springs.

I agree. My Bilstein B16 PSS10's in the pic below have a great ride height and still have another inch of lowerage left in them.
