Title: Just fitted powerflex red dog bone bush
Post by: paultownsend on 03 December 2012, 14:14
what an easy job! two jacks on the freezing concrete floor. old bolts came out easily.bushes crumbled out!

vice broke, and new bushes still went it fine. torqued up to 12lbft.

minimal, and i do mean minimal vibration on cold tickover. nothing when warm. im confident this will settle down over time too.

there's a uphill junction pulling on to my road where the wheels used to hop. no more even in the rain. much more positive on the gear change under load. no more rocking when pushing the right pedal.

great mod for £21. bolts were less than £5 from TPS.  They had an oil sale so picked up 5L of Platinum and a filter for £20. happy days!

Did you change the round bush on the dog bone mount as well? Uprated engine and gearbox mounts will also help further especially if the car has already piled on a lot of mileage. You will get varying degree of vibration from different engine mounts so it is worth reading some reviews of different engine mounts.

Used 10w40 in mine for over 30k no issues what so ever.
Changed the oil every 3 months regardless of how many miles I travelled.

Car was on 70k and left just a smugde over 100k.

I would always use quantum

On the 1.8t I'm using the platinum 5w40

I wouldn't use anything else. Changed every 5k.

I changed the pick up pipe 1k ago and the block was clean. You'll only get that through regular changes with quality oil. Bloody cold weather combined with 10 minute journey to work is starting to build up mayo in the breathers though.

Ps. Engines used 1/4 litre since that change. Not sure why anyone would use a 10w40 in these engines. Even high milers!

If it makes a difference mine was AGU not AUM.

Same ere btw the changed the pick up pipe on mine and the pipe werent bad at all considering its never had a change from the service history.

Im sure 5w40 is ok for the AUM's, AUQ's but I never had any problems what so ever using 10w40 in AGU

Isnt every 3 months a bit of a waist?

eBay for bush. Tps for new stretch bolts. You need a torque wrench if doing yourself.
As said, only slight vibration on cold idle. Once warm it can't be noticed.

My old one was absolutely buggered. It just crumbled out

just to add a little to the oil debate....

I also ran 10-40 in my car for 50 000 miles with no apparent problems at all.

However, I then switched to 5-40 platinum, and it runs smoother, and uses less oil between changes....

Definitely better

5w-40 is quite a nice blend, it offers the low temperature protection that meets OE viscosity specifications but provides better lubrication when warm than the 5w-30 counterparts originally specified.

Bit odd when I look up and see the thread is titled "Just fitted powerflex red dog bone bush"

Haha happens all the time on this forum.

Well for 1.8t boys use 5w40, however many of us have used 10w40 for a good amount of time and miles without issues too. Just dont mix them

This! Better protection at start up. I think that's how it works?

I used the 10w40 Quantum Silver in my 2.0 ABF. Wouldn't have use anything else.

how do you change the pickup pipe mate?

Drop the engine oil out,
Undo sump and remove from block,
Undo 2 X 10mm bolts for the oil pick up.
Replace the oil pick up pipe and reverse the above job done.

Ensure you have good sump sealant as 1.8t's dont use a gasket.

I stopped by that same spot on several occassions, just further down are some granite slabs I used to traverse. I never have reception in that area either but I think vodafone does. Also like to add my oil was inside my sump when I was parked there

LOL got to love life's little surprises, fortunate for you it coincides with when your oil needs changing. It has been such a long time since I've been brecon beacon, some nice roads but much too many nudists sun bathing about in the summer
