i swear i heard somewhere that running aircon pump takes a bit of power, is there noticeable gains ?
-
Aircon pump is on a clutch pulley, if not in use then it doesn't have much drag. It is not noticeable if you get rid of it. For a noticeable gain you really have to remove a lot more.
-
Looking for such gains is completely pointless on a road car, if you're that desperate, you ought to be looking at a different car.
-
op might be lookin to build a track car. It is a good question - certainly one that's not been touched on too often on the forum.
A lot of the time these changes are done to the car not purely for power gains but because they no longer serve any purpose or it's done as part of weight reduction. In which case it's all or nothing. The effects are profound.

Then he should look for something that weighs less than the earth...
in all seriousness though, you wouldnt notice any difference in the power from the air con tbh

To each their own I guess, but the MK4 can do fine when put on a diet.
On topic though, I was talking to Romain Levesque about his dyno and mapping in general and some how we did speak about back to back results in terms of parasitic drag he measured back to back on his dyno, I think the aircon sapped around 2bhp when off, ~8-12bhp when on, although it wasn't much it was reproducible.
If this is anything to go by, I have seen excellent fuel consumption by having made a series of alterations to my 1.6/1.8t mk4:

I've removed the aircon pump, condenser, and all engine bay pipes from mine.
Just replaced the aux belt with one from a non aircon car. fair bit of weight saved, over 15kg I believe
-
guna do it then as its never any need for it here anyway

That's a lot of work for 'never needed'.
I see you're in Bristol, does it not get hot there during the summer?
Where I am it's very hot in the spring and I use my air con if I don't want the windows open on NSL roads due to noise and turbulent air.
-
I should point out that I've not just removed the air-con and magically got 50+ mpg average, the car weighs in at 1120kg
-
I wish mine was 1120kg these days :(
used to be sub 1100 before the cage, now with the cage, and full WMI tank, and a 5kg fire ext on board it's 1145

You and I have much to discuss...
We could have our own perverted version of a Anne Summer's party in each other's car pointing at random things inside and around the car to rip off
-
you 2 are mad :lipsrsealed:
-
Do it properly and get rid of everything belt driven then.
Swap to electrical pumps etc.
Parasitic losses then drop way down.
-
I don't have power steering, I have no intention on fitting an electric pump, just more parasitic drag through the alternator and I imagine it would make the steering that much more 'numb'.
I removed the power steering to improve feedback from the car and it has worked to no end, can definitely feel changes in road surface and the limit of traction.
I am inclined to agree with agreeable slick, if you can live without power steering, remove the power steering.
-
What do you guys not eat before driving to save weight? :) b
Haha how much would my 99 1.8t weigh ?
-
I have just over 3% body fat, hardly carrying excess weight

Is yours a track car?

This sounds like fun! haha, I'm sure the girlfriend would love it
You seem to have gone pretty extreme on the weight saving, I like this, considering the golf shell is heavier than the A3 to start with 1120kg is very impressive.
Are you still on the standard steering rack but without PAS? I think on my LCR rack it'd just be too heavy to even consider parking the car!
Wait until I've got this VWMS shifter finished, then it'll be a really ann summers affair! Billet knobs? yes please

hahaha, that's awesome. I'm about 30%
-
LOL what the mrs don't know wont hurt
I'm on the standard rack and even then it is pretty difficult to dry steer if you need to, also pretty tough under 5mph around car park, which is a shame because I would love the ratio of the LCR rack when I'm above 20mph
I would not consider my car to be a purpose built track car, but I do use it on the track and as a daily. It's work in progress so I hope with time to get my car to drive how I would like.

Uprate alternator, smaller gear cog. Order of magnitude smaller parasitic loss.
Electrical draw will always beat belt driven for reducing parasitic loss. You could always dlc the bores and bearings to reduce them further, depends how deep your pockets are
-
cheap and cheerful does me fine
Underdrive pulley for the alternator and no other ancillaries does me fine
I did consider electric steering but I really worry it will bring a whole new level of 'numbness' to the drive. It's a shame so many modern cars are going in that direction now though. I drove a honda civic with the electric steering and I instantly thought to myself "Well I must be driving on ice!" Safe to say I will not be going back to power steering, especially on the mk4; it just feels so vague unlike the mk2 or a DC2 - the jap are pretty good with their power steering systems to not rob all feel.
