Post by: Guy on 09 November 2012, 11:38

thank you :)

only have a £10k budget so we'll be quite limited although I spotted a 1.4TSi which is 4mo but I have no experience of those engines and wondered if they would cope with snow etc.. it'll be used in some pretty hilly surroundings and probably snowy conditions

The 1.4TSI can have a few problems

Try and get a 140 diesel if you can

What about a Yeti?

been thinking about them... like a passat but the preference is for a tig or a defender 90

As bullet proof as the defenders are, I don't think you'll like it as a day to day car. Far too loud and uncomfortable. They are extremely basic, even the brand new ones, and I know its a kinda charm that some like, but for me its just not a nice place to be when driving. Don't get me wrong they have their niche, but for a daily/workhorse, I couldn't spend alot of time on the road in one. I think the Tig is probably the best you're likely to find in the VAG range. Maybe an BMW X3?

knowing the requirements and conditions - all these soft roader recommendations are useless.

Landie all the way

Why not a Disco? Something that will properly handle snow and offroad conditions and have a reasonably comfortable interior.

What ARE the requirements then?

I'd have a Tiguan in a heartbeat, unless there was a Yeti in front of it (or anywhere in sight), then I wouldn't get to the Tiguan.

But all this is immaterial unless we have a purchasing specification.

and if you look there are a few tdi 4mo's in your price range

Series 2 TD5 disco go for it, avoid a cheap D3 for under 10k... In all honesty, avoid D3 completely... Unless your prepared to shell out ££££££ on keeping it on the road.

Defender 90 all the way id have one if i had the cash. Doubt youl get a puma under 10k though, would probably be a TD5. Nothing wrong with that though.  Stoping making the Defender at some point shortly anyway. A DC130 like thing to come with rubber bumpers etc hahah........

10k
4wd
good fuel economy
not starship mileage
comfortable inside - used as a daily
MUST handle hills and snow as it is essential to travel from a remote location everyday
be able to handle 3 hour motorway journeys happily
be able to be used to transport surfboards easily

t5 tdi 4motion VAN then

good fuel economy

That eliminates the entire Land Rover range then.

T5 4motion isn't a bad shout, but the spec'd be pretty basic for £10k.

Tiguan definitely satisfies your requirements.  Hopefully you/whoever it's required for can put up with the agricultural gear-shift and high clutch.

If it's serious winter work you need it for then get a set of wheels and winter tyres for it - you'll soon make people in Land Rovers look stoopid with that combination.

looked at the T5's but they were all very high milage that we could find

test drove a Tiguan yesterday and although it wasn't 'exciting' it wasn't offensive

good call on the winter wheels ;)

Audi Allroad? Quite a few about for your 10k budget mostly between 80-100k miles though, what would you class as starship miles?
Title: Re: Tiguan... buying advice

If I'm honest you'll struggle to better the Passat 4Mo TDI estate and it'll leave you with a lot smaller dent in your finances.  It's a much simpler car, too.

You could even go B6 and have a bucketload of cash left from your budget.  Do you NEED the ground clearance?

Tiguan 170 TDI we drove did 35MPG on a test drive and I wasn't particularly spanking it as it doesn't demand that sort of treatment - it's vehicle as appliance territory for me, whereas the Passat can still be grabbed by the scruff of the neck when needed/wanted.
