Selling all my cars bar the MK3 most likely in January.
Going to be buying and insuring a Caddy. SHOULD get round abouts £1000-£1500 for the MK4 once I've tidyed it up and put some tyres on it.
With that I want to get something FUN for a change and the sort of car I can sell in 6 months (providing I haven't binned it) and get back pretty much what I paid.
Can insure MK3 GTI 16v's no problem so that's the kinda insurance type I'm looking at. I'd LIKE a Golf MK2 but not exactly fun out of the box and I'd want to keep it.
MAYBE a 16v GTI but again, not exactly all that fun out the box. This is a maybe as I have some decent coilovers and wheels for it already.
It's just something to thrash about, MG ZR's, 106 GTI's, Saxo's etc. Just a chavvy boy racer car. OR an MX5.
What would you do, this will give me a few months to get saving for the insurance.

MR2?

Hmm good shout with the MR2.
MK3 has no engine and is awaiting for the garage to be empty and have a full strip down.
MK3 16v I had was plenty powerful enough, half thinking VR6 as then the engine for the MK3 is sorted and just break it after. But still don't think it would be major fun.
Or the sensible option would be get a TDI Lupo or something, fairly fun but I'm just soooooo bored of driving boring, dull diesel cars. The Passat is LOVELY, really is but still not quite old enough yet.
The SDI is gay and nearly written off twice today due to sheer boredom.

Hmm good shout with the MR2.
168bhp of mid engine rear wheel drive goodness!
-
Hmm, another £300 over a 16v GTI but as you say........ Could search further and probably get that down a tad anyway.
Could be a winner. Don't even mind if it's £500 and the paints peeling. Would vinyl/paint it and just sell it on. As long as I get most of the money back I'm not bothered.
It's the insurance I hate paying! But I need something so I'm not lugging a Caddy about everywhere.

Insurance looks down on me. Still not THAT fun.
Can insure a Hyundai Coupe F2 Evo dirt cheap and pick them up dirt cheap. Older bro had one once, that was a nice little car actually!

I got a quote on an MR2 of £260 a year

Old man!
My beemers £700
I can insure an M3 for that

I know someone selling a 205 GTI 1.9 with Megasquirt, in absolutely fantastic condition outside, and just a worn bolster on the half leather inside for £1500. He may come down a couple of hundred as well. Its in a kinda dark grey colour. I may be able to get some phots tomorrow if your interested.

S2 MR2's are lethal in the wet and will test your driving skills if you thrash it about, not saying they are bad just that they let go all at once.
That said they are pretty solid but do suffer from electrical gremlins, I still have a new set of OE lamp mechs in the folks loft
You can get a turbo to run pretty good power or drop in a V6 Camry lump (185 bhp) for that awesome sound....
That said pushing on into roundabouts or corners with just the 155bhp 16v can be tricky enough
great fun though

Why not a Passat?
Get one same age as mine for say £800 get it remapped - if you buy a 1.8T that is and believe me they are FUN!!!!
-
just as i read the first post one of the lads drove out of the carpark in his MR2.
i agree have a look for an mr2
also mx5 as you said, few older ones lurking around for cheep.
also as youve said saxo vts, everyone i know who has had one says they miss it because its such a small fun car to drive.

if insurance is no issue get a cheap classic impreza, nothing will beat it for the money.
if not mr2s are great, had a mk2 rev 2 myself , excellent in the dry and keep you on your toes in the wet! had the back end step out afew times which suprised me as i wasnt expecting it, but catch it early enough and youl be fine

Cheers lads, some good suggestions.
Things may have changed as I now may be car sharing with my younger brother as his insurance is obviously monumental or £1300 with him on mine.
Both earn a NCB (albeit probably needing to be used with Admiral). £1300 on an SDI Golf MK4 which isn't too bad for a brand new 17 year old driver on my policy.
16v MK3 goes up to £2594! Only £900 for me to insure it.

What a surprise... its not happening!

Could do but probably happen in the form of a 1.4TDI Lupo or something. All depends on my brother really. TBH, a £400 16v GTI would do me fine ATM.

I know a few nice bits of a$$ you could probably spend a grand on.... plenty of fun, but no change given and the only insurance you need to worry about is a bit of rubber.
