Right guys, I've had an insurance payout for my Impreza and I'm putting my midlife crisis days behind me (should have bought a Golf in the 1st place!)
I have a daily driver car so i'm looking for a Golf to modify and enjoy BUT it also has to do a few long journeys a year, commute to/from the missus place (60 mile round trip, 2/3 times a week) plus a trip or 2 to Newquay and a track weekend at the Ring every year.
I have an idea in my head that a 3 Door Mk4 GT Tdi would have the torque to make me smile (its mainly B-roads round here), which I could then add anniversary or R32 looks to, remap/tinker with but also get decent mpg when I need it.
The main problem with this is that i'm not clued up on oil burners, what to look for, year and engine variations and what it will likely cost to mod to a reasonable level (300lb/ft would be nice). I've got some nice, subtle styling ideas and I know about the various Bora etc trim upgrades.
Previously I had thought about getting a 20v turbo 3 door, so I know a fair bit about what potential they have, and I think I could happily blow my budget trying to achieve the torque that a TDI can produce. I know I talk about torque a lot, but i've done enough trackdays, Nurburgring etc to know that I'll get more enjoyment from a torquey motor than one that has 300bhp and will do 150+mph.
So my question is, with 3 grand, what should I be looking for? What sort of mods list should I consider (power wise) before things start getting into "next level" where major surgery and wallet battering is needed? I will have about £400 a month to spend on the car on a monthly basis but i'm crap at saving, so dont say "save up and get a xxxx" coz it wont happen. I cant afford an Anniversary and to be honest, I dont see the justification in the inflated price compared to a standard Gti. They look amazing, but the price tags just dont do it for me.
I've been into modified cars for 20 years, had nearly everything from all the Ford XR's, Vauxhall SRi's, GTE's, Mazda MX6's (Import and UK), 2x Impreza's with 330bhp, 205 Gti's etc etc so I know the score when it comes to playing with cars. I do a lot of car shows, Trax, Santa Pod, Ten of the Best and would like a Golf that people take notice of.
You guys have all been there and done that so I'm hoping you can pass on your knowledge and save me making expensive mistakes or doing things twice. Many thanks to all who can share their wisedom :)

Both petrol and dev Anni golfs on eBay for £3000
Thanks chap but i'd be interested to see what the petrol guys have to say on this and what realistic performance I can get for my budget.

I had a look, and I cant find one for 3k or less, unless its a shed.

If you're after a derv then it should be either a PD130 or PD150. From what I've read the PD150 is the better of the two...has different turbo, injectors, inlet & FMIC. With a good remap you'll see 190bhp & 300+lb/ft.
The PD150 is known to have cams made of chocolate so I'd be looking for one that has already had them replaced.

As for a petrol, £3k would see you with a pretty well sorted 1.8T. You'll be able to pick up a decent one for around £2000, leaving you with another £1k to spend straight away. I'd be looking for an earlier AUM engine, and look at upgrading the turbo at a later date.
With your £1k I'd be looking at sorting handling first...decent coilovers (KW or similar), polybushes, arb's, brakes, then a good service and remap (with an upgraded recirc valve).
Further down the line....FMIC, exhaust, KO4, injectors, 3" MAF, S3 fuel pump, TIP, silicone hoses etc.

£3250 57'000miles, full history, 3 owners. 15 hours left. Not far off £3000

No change for modding

As said, that would be the very top end of my budget and can anyone please tell me what makes an Anni worth nearly double (in some cases) what a stocker is. How much would it cost to buy a stock gti and get it to Anni spec?

Buy a late model golf sort of '52 plate + with an AUQ lump and youve pretty much got an anni spec with out the looks. 180bhp K03s 6speed box, 312mm vented front brakes 256mm? rears etc etc

Then the lights, valances, side skirts, seats, clocks, alu trim etc.
If your fitting genuine parts then you'll be looking at about a grand for that lot.

My antie is currently selling her MK4 Black GT TDI 130. on 92k, on a 52 plate.
Pm me for details if your interested.

buy mine! as in my sig, very well looked after, 86k...... you dont want a derv !!
-
or buy an early s3
-
or mine for £2500 had a lot of work done to it to get it back to its former glory so that theres a solid base for mods, haven't done much to it but you'll get a smoother rear bumper thrown in for free lol

Mate, you sound like a former petrol head that's just given up, laid down, and died.
I can't possibly see how a 300lbft soot chucker could ever give you more enjoyment than a petrol turbo car.
No offense to the tdi tuners out there, but a stage 1 1.8T with 210bhp / 250lbft (nothing more than a £250 map) is going to be a far faster car, and far more enjoyable to drive than a mapped PD150 with 190bhp and 300lbft.
It's not all about peak figures, it's about delivery too. a 300lbft tdi has it all in one big lump then it jsut dies straight off again, no revs, no nice sound, just a quick poke then you're changing gear again.
Diesel is for agriculture and heavy haulage, petrol is for enjoyment.
Sounds like you've forgotten that :(

For once prawn talks sense. a 1.8T with a k03 hybrid/k04/k04 hybrid (all within budget including supporting mods) will make close to/above/quite a bit above 300lbft of torque and you also get the bhp to go with it later in the rev range. Unless you plan of doing endurance stints at track days, dervs are no good.

What do you mean 'for once' you cheeky fecking youth!!!!
-
or buy an early 1.8t audi a3 quattro so you can run silly ppower and not have to do a haldex conversion

trouble then is, it technically speaking, wont be a golf

200 mile a week your prob looking at a £40 bill if you go for an 1.8t so unless that sounds good for you then id go for a 130pd and map it.
3k for a diesel anni would be good goin tho, but id be put off mapping it as the 150s have a camshaft wearing reputaion (from what ive read, over and over!)
torque is half the fun tho, handling isnt great on mk4s, and a heavy castengine makes things worse, i hate to say it but i would try and stretch to a mk5.
-
I thought that was the idea??

Not read any posts.
But 750 will get you a t304 kit, manifold, FMIC, oil cooler, turbo etc... turbo might need rework or 2nd hand one is also an option, throw some rods, fuel pump, injectors and maf and that will easily see you with 300bhp and lb at 1bar.
Then any left over money on remap, handling mods, exhaust and meth.
