Title: Was very lucky , very, very lucky.
Post by: I.D.C. on 23 October 2012, 12:55
On a  A Road near where I stay on Sunday night which was very quiet apart from a car well behind me so thought I would give the GTI a wee blast was going fast wont write what speed it was. When I came to the next junction I slowed right down in case there were any oncoming cars. After the junction I put the foot down again until I caught up with the next car. I decided not to over take this car and keep a safe distance the car behind me was still there. Came to the roundabout and onto the B  road leading to my village again another we blast but slowed right down where i know the road is not safe. Drove into the village with the car behind me still following. Dread was going through me which proved to be correct it was an unmarked Police car. Rightly received a lecture and that we all like to have a wee fast drive but i could have lost my licence to be more carful and have a nice night.

I felt shattered after that and very embarrassed but grateful for the Police leniency. That's me slowed down now and if honest want out the GTI now, Going to order a mark 7 golf 1.4 which will do me.

Many many years ago I was on a 1am charge when I saw a pair of headlights seemingly gaining on me. I thought it may have been a police car and considered diving off down a side road and turning my lights off once I'd rounded a bend and my tail lights were out of his sight, but I was going way too fast to make the junction, so kept going very quickly.

As I got to the next village I braked very hard to slow down to 30mph, only to have a mirror full of blue lights. I held my hands up straight away, apologized very humbly and took a proper telling off. He told me I was not going to fully get away with it, but due to the way I was with him, he would give me a ticket for doing 80 in a 60. I didn't mind the 30 points and small fine as it could have been much worse.

It certainly didn't stop me from having quick cars afterwards tho'. It just taught me not to be so stupid with them. 16 years later and no more points since, I'd say it was lesson learned.

The real benefit of a powerful car is that you can overtake Zafira 1.6's and motorhomes with much greater safety.  You can also join motorways with ease and generally get out the way of trouble.
There is no need to zoom about just because your car can.  Plod was sensible in this case, you might as well keep the GTI and drive well rather than losing money changing to a girlie shopper.

I had an encouter with my bordeaux Audi driving way too fast (driving license in danger !!)  late in the evening,  suddenly a car dove in front of me I was overtaken and the " follow me"  sign appeared.
We drove to the next juncion....the undercover policecar parked in front of me...we both stepped out of our cars at the same time.
I noticed quickly that his car was exactly the same as mine as if mine was parked againt a mirror.
The policeman noticed that at the same time... The first thing I said to him was.....what is this car a joy to drive, isn't it.....
He could not hide his smile....

I got a way with a small fine....

With faster cars usually comes better brakes, an additional safety bonus with their being some right twonks on the road.

You could make a 1.4 golf do very illegal speeds.  Not that I've tried!!

Maybe a g-whiz perhaps?  Your performance runs would be quick but short lived!

Had a good one once.

Local road to me...3-400yards of dual carriageway off a roundabout....road is about a mile long.

Decided to put toe down, pass a 2.7 Audi estate and some other thing. Gets past them and well into 4th gear nearly 5th until i look in mirror and see headlights flashing.  Took another look and looked like police (no blue lights) so slowed down a little and eventually caught me up.
Asked me where I was going (said to go pick my pizza up) and told me to be a little slower and said on your way.

Could have easily outrun it if I really wanted to....but thats not very clever really.

Not too long after i passed my test there was a fuel strike so me and my mate (who was in a separate car) went around looking for petrol stations with fuel. I was driving my N reg 1.4 Polo and my mate was in his 1.0L Corsa.

After we went to the last pump we decided to head home. as we had both passed our test within the last 2months our clutch control was questionable. This resulted is u both wheel spinning away from the station.

As we pulled out i noticed a white van in the background but thought nothing of it. we drove away at a bit of a pace but as the road was twisty it wasn't very fast. when we got onto the road behind mine we both put our foots down and reached about twice the limit. we then turned into the road adjacent to mine and then we saw the blue lights. we both pulled up and got out of our cars and went over to the police officer. we got the usual do you know y we stopped you and do you know what speed you were doing. He looked at our licences and saw that we had both recently passed. my mate had 9points on his (he received those before he got his actual licence) and then gave us a telling off and said he wont do anything more as we had recently passed out test which we both thanked him for.

We both got into our cars drove 50metres and pulled into my drive. :embarrassed:

if my dad was in his bedroom he would or easily seen the flashing lights. :-S

If doesnt matter about the car you drive only about the speed you are travelling at and how lenient the officer is.

I was averaged doing 100.31mph by an unmarked car on a motorway, at a very quiet time, and got 6 points and £200 fine + court costs. This was almost 2 years ago. I held my hands up and apologised, said it was stupid etc but they had it all on video, so it was an easy one for them.

I was always observant of police, but the motorway was dead. There was one car in front doing a similar speed and one car behind (the one who happened to be a copper).

Now I'm even more observant. Any car that is catching up is suspicious, so I slow down. Any new car.. BMW, Ovlov etc doing 60mph is suspicious, slow down. I may have a short blast, but I never 'cruise' at 100mph anymore.

I think having a 1.4 can be dangerous but it depends where you live. If popping to town and back, city driving, it's fine I'm sure. But for overtaking and pulling out on to 60 or 70mph roads, it is much safer to have some power, in my opinion. There have been times in a 1.4 when we have gone for an overtake, it's been clear, the car next to us has accelerated and another car is now visible and approaching us. Do you brake and pull back in, or carry on and hope you can get past? Arguably a risk you shouldn't take in a slower car, but how many people would be happy sitting behind some old biddy in a Micra doing 35mph?

Been there before mate, got done for 3 Pts and 60 quid fine! Passed an unmarked car at 96 mph! Think I got off lightly! I felt same as you, embarrassed and wanting to change to a slower car ..... like a diesel  but you get over it and on with it! Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't drive as quick as I did, maybe I am just getting old or can't afford to drive with the foot down anymore!

Sounds as if you were lucky as all you needed was a grumpy copper...

Personally I've only got caught speeding twice..once on a 50cc ped going down hill  and doing 38 in a 30 by a camera...then by the plod I was doing 40ish in a 30 and the copper clocked me he was on the other side of the road and I saw him turn around in my rear view mirror so I simply pulled over and waited for the flashing blues to pull in behind, I apologised and had my license ready and was let off with a slap on the wrist..

I've had a grumpy copper pull me in he pulled me on a Friday night for fogs, I got a £30 fine( no points)

I was quite amazed that he pulled me for something so trivial(in the grand scale of things I mean) but lesson learned...

I'm now very alert to posh possible unmarked cars, I probably no most of them round these parts as I've seen them pulling peeps but you never know these days what sort of vehicles the plod might use...

I don't tend to really speed I just like the thort that if I need the power I've got it...yes I know it's not GTI/R ect but still...

My friend got caught by the Belgian plod doing 93mph....trying to keep up with me

Good job they weren't behind us just a few miles back

Made me think twice though!

I never do over 150mph now!

Just kidding about the 150mph!

I got collared for doing 40mph+ on my mountain bike in a 30.

Though oddly never got caught doing the cannon ball run on the same bike down into Sheffield through all them red lights. :-)

I got done doing 66 coming into a 30. Hands up, was idiotic. As I went passed a garden centre the police car popped out...court, 6 points, £80 fine. I was in a van at the time.

Then whilst working in NZ for 6 weeks earlier this year, I got caught doing 130 kmh in a 100 zone (100 is the limit on a motorway), hadn't seen a car for 15 minutes then the copper coming the other way pulls me. They can clock you coming towards you, unlike ours. $250 fine!

Then when I got home I got 2 more tickets, both for 5kmh over, in 80 limits!! That was in a Land Cruiser.

And I thought we had it bad until I went out there...!

Interestingly, I haven't been caught in the GTI, or on my Speed Triple!

sorry but 66mph in a 30 is ridiculous and you got away very lightly with that one. i would have expected a ban to be honest.

speeding on deserted or quiet road or even main roads is one thing but in built up area thats another matter altogether.

im totally anti-speed camera and luckily where i live the police don't have any but i think there is a place for them around schools and parks etc where kids/families are vulnerable.

I know that...it wasn't a built up 30 which is probably why I didn't get a ban. Present yourself well in court, and say straight out that you were a complete idiot and you can be looked upon favouribly. It probably helped that I proved the prosecution wrong on a couple of things.

I did the same - just said I was sorry, it was stupid and I've learnt my lesson. One of the magistrates then said he'd been caught speeding the week before

Saw a Carbon Grey GTI on the M69 with twinklies on a while back that had just pulled over a mondeo! Warwickshire police seem to have a good selection of unmarked cars. Saw an Evo doing 70 (unusual I thought!) in the slow lane on the M69 and was not surprised to see uniforms in the car.

Agreed SRGTD was on the motorway a few years back and was stuck in heavy traffic due to accident up ahead and heard the blues and two and I was shocked to see a old shaped unmarked Renault Clio come up on the hard shoulder...

Apparently when it rains its near enough impossible to spot them until its too late. esp when they are running a silver car.

In my R there was a speed warning facility within the MDF.  Very useful for dual carriaways and the motorway if you want to stick below a certain limit.

I think the general rule in the UK is that if you are caught doing 30mph over the limit, expect a lot of points / & even a ban.  Anyone know different ?

sup guys don't know if anybody remembers me  :undecided: got my GTI back in 2010 (gawd seems a while ago now). not logged into the forum for a while.
not really had any problems with it. still running fine.

indicentally i was stopped by the police recently. let off with a warning. i didn't feel i was going particularly fast. i was going down a regular road i take, houses on one side, one side of the road marked off for parked cars with a cycle lane also marked. it was around 11pm at night, sunset had long gone, it was pure street lighting.
going downhill, i didn't feel i was going down with any gusto, maybe about 40 something along this 30 road (i honestly don't know exactly as i wasn't really looking at the speedo). i don't have the pedal to the floor or anything. actually my foot might have been off the gas. was going downhill so the car kind of went down by itself. can't remember.
going round a little bend i immediately see 2 electric mobility scooter type things in the cycle lane.

i'm thinking wtf scooters? they got lights on but it didn't seem right they should be on the road. why can't they just drive on the pavement?

there is enough room to pass if i stay to the left of the centre road marking dividing the 2 sides of the road as the cycle lane has its own marking, but as it was quiet with no oncoming traffic, i move out a bit into the middle of the road to give extra space to the scooters.

after overtaking these 2 scooters which i considered i did quite safely, the car behind me that i was not consciously aware of started flashing blue lights.
oh gawd it's the police!
totally caught me by surprise. it sounds insane but i was honestly not consciously aware of it. the car is one of those transit connect vans, marked with the usual high visibility squares. wtf how did i not notice a police car behind me?

pulled over where it was safe and i got out of the car.

i only had my photocard driving licence with me. all my other stuff relating to the car is at home or on the computer.
the officer told me something about it was an offence not to be able to produce documentation on demand when requested. this was news to me that i was supposed to be carrying all the stuff relating to my car.
he then seems to chill out a bit and says he understands that people are not going to be carrying all the docs with them in case their car gets stolen and whatever. i presume technically it is an offense not to carry docs but the practicalities of doing so don't really make sense.

he radioed in the details of my car to check it out.
in my own head i'm thinking all sorts of crap.
i'm thinking omfg what if something doesn't check out? what if it looks like i'm not insured?! i know in my own head i've insured it and i think i'm fully legit, but it was all done online, the last time i renewed i didn't even get stuff through the post, it's all electronic certificates now and it could have been some elaborate hoax insurance!

car checks out fine in the end.  phew! police officer apparently thinks that things like the lights and tyres are all fine. i don't remember him walking round to look, maybe he wasn't bothered about that. officer just lets me off with a warning. i was driving faster than the speed limit, there is no doubt there.
officer tells me to take it easy future. also he says the scooters shouldn't have really been on the road. they were nowhere to be seen though. they might have turned off into a side street after overtaking them.

i've not really been driving any different since. i don't feel i drive it crazy, although obviously the potential is there. i just know if i did do it, the petrol money would go insane! i was just peed off at those frigging scooters that were in the road. and maybe there was a bit of hunch from the policeman thinking GTI at 11pm at night driving a bit fast, maybe it's been nicked?

FLASH FLASH!

So...I have a friend......who was the wrong side of 70 this morning on the M42 through the variable speed limit, system wasn't on but still got flashed.

Anyone ever got points when the variable speed was switched off, so no speed limit suggested or enforced with the red circle?

I've always wondered that too ... there's a long stretch of M1 with this now and M62 is also getting the "managed motorway" system too soon.

I've never seen anyone get "FLASHED FLASHED" on the M1 stretch, and they've passed me at 80+ mph, but  I guess the sytem could be set to just catch the real speedsters at nearer 100mph.

Feckity Feck after holding my license for almost 25yrs ish and lived a lucky life of "appropriately placed speed evasion", I've finally be caught by a static sneaky b**tard camera van just outside Ft William last week.

Doing 41mph and slowing at the time in a 30mph area on the outskirts when i would having been doing well to hit a sheep never mind endangering the travelling public or pedestrians. B*gger. :embarrassed:

My clean license is about to be saddled with 3 points is it and can i expect a £60 fine?

yes, it will be an SP30 offense I think, as long as they did actually catch you.

If it was a mobile van there will have been a "manned" laser gun - he/she may have been having a tea break at the time if you are lucky

Oh dear bad luck.

After 28 years of driving cars and bikes and having had a few speeding fines and points in the past I can honestly say each time I got done was because I was not paying enough attention to spot the speed camera or police man pointing a speed gun at me in time.

The way I see it if there is another car within sight I dont go mad coz you never know and at night too. I learnt a valuable lesson around 20 years ago when a friend of mine decided to change lane on a dual carriage way (as joke) while I was gaining fast, luckily no issues but if you cant trust a mate then you can't trust anyone. However if there is an empty peice of road and its safe then it up to my concience, luckily I have a few roads near me that are not busy

A few months ago I was near home in a 30 and doing 30 on a straight road where I know there are speed traps. I saw a police man with a speed gun and he measured my speed and put the gun down, the next second the guy following me pulled out and over took me about 100 metres from the police man, yes he was measured and pulled over I had to laugh but that would have been me 15 years ago.  :smug:

Bad luck

I can recommned the PocketGPSWorld speed camera database for your SatNAV.

It includes all known mobile sites (as well as fixed sites of course) and is kept up to date.  If you are the first to report a new camera you get free life membership too).

Although the mobile sites are unlikely to be manned, it does at least give you advance warning and alert you to keep a look out.
