Me and a few mates are wanting to do a 20vT conversion into a mk2, because we want to nail scoobies and evos at traffic lights laughing all the way. Is there any point in putting a 20vT from a crashed leon cupra R into a Rallye or is it just a waste of a G60 engine and a good 4wd? If not what would you guys recommend using, like just a 1.3 driver? We will of course keep you informed of the progress with pics, and should hopefully turn out nice, one of the guys helping has access to cheap carbon fibre parts and is intent on covering the thing in it, sparing no expense.
Thanks

well your gonna need the 4wd to beat scoobies and evos, so go for it  get it as light as possible tho, the rallyes are a fair bit heavier than standard fwd golfs.
good luck, sounds like a quality project

if you wanted to go sleeper look you could use a syncro as the base

yeah - if you happen to be on a mountain track with loose gravel! please, dump the 4wd idea as it saps too much power from the engine and you don't need it. if you only want to win traffic light gps' stick the 20vT lump in and be done with it.

theres a limit to the power you can have and use in a fwd, and its easily exceeded with a 20vt engine.

Maybe, but you still see mk4s with the IHI conversion pushing 400bhp and as long as you know how to put the power down, it's bye bye M3!

Make sure you budget for a LSD. Getting the power down in a 2wd mk2 with just 210bhp can be tricky in the first 2 gears and forget it in the wet!

The Syncro/Rallye/G60 system only puts power to the rear wheels if the fronts start slipping, so you don't actually loose any power/echonomy in normal driving conditions as you do on constant 4wd system. Gives you all the advantages but non of the drawbacks :)
The Rallye has a stonger drivetrain than the Synchro so is a better base for a high power engine transplant, I'd defo go for it

yeah i was just saying the other day i'd like to do one of these! quite a few have been done now as alot of g60's are long in the tooth.

Thanks for all your help. What I was trying to ask was how much different are the G60 and the 20vT from say a cupra r or gti, I know work will have to be done, but would it be alot greater than putting one in a £500 1.3 driver as opposed to a £5000 rallye?
I guess are abjective to start off with was to beat evos and scoobies at traffic lights, if they'll race, but also generally - dual carriages, motorways etc. All we need now is money. Lol.
So, gtijoe do you know of any place I can find out more about the rallyes that have already had 20vT conversions or are they just word of mouth. Thanks
-
no there are plenty about, saw at least three at the weekend at santa pod! best thing to do is read magazines such as pvw and the golf+ i think in the past they have featured about 5 or so conversions, call up pvw and see if you can get any back issues, they should be able to sort you out. there was a test on one with the numberplate B16 5VT against an audi s3 the other month (photos of it in my pics from santa pod, in vw section) and maybe last month there was a feature of a sweet ass one by a guy called Dale Finn i think. grey one with a lush red interior. and going back a few months was a feature on a crazy one but can't remember the guys name or which issue.

I read about Dale Finn's but I have only been reading the mags pvw, golf+ etc for a few months. I liked the grey on black number plates on mr Finn's they are sweet
thanks

jody from dubvelopments was in the golf mag,
also see our web site as his car is in there

There are loads of rallyes with 20vt conversions.
if you're racing and you start at about 40mph then go for 2wd. if you want to launch off the lights and haul ass to 60 in less than 5 then you'll need 4wd.
-
mind you i saw dales up at santa pod and i didn't think it was quick at all up the quarter mile, can't remember his time but it was nothing special.

jodys runs low 13's (6 quickest @ inters 2 years ago) and it was only running 300 bhp then
