Title: New Forge Actuator
Post by: oceanic-green on 12 September 2012, 15:09
I just had a new Forge Actuator fitted on my Aum, but what I am wanting to know is, does the ecu take a little time to get used to it before I would feel the benefit, as my old one was not working correctly. My car is a stage one remap too

Thanks

Nah it should be fine mate, I put mine on straight on before a remap and it was fine although mine was on a AGU.

Youl notice a difference 5k revs onwards

Oh bugger..it was not the actuator that was at fault then  :undecided:

Actuator will only hold as much boost as the ECU tells it to.

Gaurentee it will have made a difference, might just need mapping in to take extra benefit.

Whats up with it?

The problem is that I had it remapped by R-tech, about 2 years ago, and I have only ever felt the remapped power for about 6 months out of those 2 years! I have changed everything, started off with the silicone pipes, ended up getting a catch can, new coil packs with recall, Forge DV, new silicone tip, all new silicone turbo boost hoses, new n75, agu charge pipe and hose, new maf, N249 deleted, coolant sensor changed, Secondary air pump rivets replaced with bolts and now new Forge actuator. And I am not getting 200+ bhp, but no more than 165  :undecided:

What colour spring is in the actuator?

Best bet would be to take it to r-tech for a diagnostics sessions.

Yeh, but the only problem with that is that they may need it longer than a day so one of them said to me on the phone, and I live about 180-ish miles away on the south coast, plus I need my car pretty much every day

Book a room at the premier inn? If you discuss it with r-tech they could probably sort somethin with you and get two days booked in back to hack but I know they ate quite busy lately.

Yeh, it is a good idea, but due to being a single parent of a 10 yr old boy it is a little hard to disappear for a few days while he is at school. I may have to wait until he has half term and take him with me, if they can book me in for then!

But I did notice yesterday that the  bit that the rod on the actuator is connected too (is it the waste gate ?) does move a slight bit. Should it do so?

No it shouldnt move at all unless you put pressure on it.
If you grap the actuator rod and apply pressure towards the turbo intake pipe your opening the waste gate. If you can move the rod with little effort you need to apply pre-load on the actuator.

Its easy to do this, undo the actuator so the waste gate can open/close easy.
Re-install the rod through the wastegate until its in the closed position and lock with the nut, turn the nut a further 2 full turns (this is the preload)

Once this is done you should not be able to feel any movement unless you put abit of force on it to open the wastegate.

Thanks for the reply jamie1989. Can I do this from above, as I can't get underneath to do it.
Here is a picture I just took of it, with the blue arrow pointing to the bit that I can move when I press it

Yeah easily. Thats how I do mine.
Undo that nut on the end until you can feel the wastegate is loose.
Close the wastegate as far it will go, do the nut up then once the wastegate is closed do a further 2 FULL turns.
Job done in less than 2mins.

Cool.
To close the waste gate is that pushing it towards the actuator, the way my arrow is pointing?
I thought pre load should be 3 full turns, not two  :undecided:

Cheers

Yepp thats right.
Once its loose youl feel it and youl know when its open or closed.
The actuator is their to keep it close and if you havent got enough preload on it as soon as you boost your potentially opening the wastegate early.
I did just over two full turns on mine to be certain it was enough, Mine was absolutley fine when being mapped and holds boost perfect.

Ok, that was easy enough  Here is the picture of it now, and the bolt is further done up the rod.

right, took it for a spin, and it is definitely better. The liquid cube gauge measured up to 176 bhp, but I couldn't really test it out properly due to the amount of traffic about. Plus I think some of the T pieces on the silicone hoses need replacing, because one of the hoses was far to easy to pull off, even with a hose clamp on  I think it was because of the T piece was from halfords and has only one barb on it. So I could be loosing a bit of boost from there as well  :undecided:
